14.01.2022 Getting Heat Detection Correct You have seen mentioned several times already in this newsletter, as calving finishes our minds now turn to getting these cows back in calf. The most vital part of the whole mating process is heat detection. If heat detection is not done well can cost you a lot of money. InCalf data tells us that just one missed heat will cost you $200/cow. These may not seem a lot, but within our average herd of 450 cows if we miss 10% of heats then that wi...ll cost $9,000 for that herd. If you would like to either brush-up on your heat detection or teach someone what the key signs of heat are DairyTas and TIA will be combining to run Heat Detection Discussion groups across the state. 12.01.2022 #pasturegrowth COMMENTS Soil temperature is trending higher and pasture growth rates have increased slightly. This trend should continue as daylight hours increase but there can always be setbacks if there are severe frosts or prolonged cold conditions. Careful management of rotation length to avoid getting too fast is still important at this time of the year. The Bureau of Meteorology reports there is a 70% chance of La Nia developing in 2020, this is three times the averag...e likelihood. La Nia is associated with increased rainfall in spring and milder daytime temperatures. Current LEAF EMERGENCY rate at Elliott is 24 days per leaf. To graze at the 3-leaf stage, rotation length should be 72 days. If you have a 100-hectare farm, this means you should be allocating 1.3 hectares per day (100 72 = 1.3 ha).
