16.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest At Damascus College, we are blessed to have a huge range of Extra-curricular groups and activities for our students to engage and learn with. The Sustainable Racing Team (SRT) are a group of enthusiastic students and teachers who are interested in vehicles, mechanics and science. SRT members Lucas, Dylan and Madison shared some of their experiences both on and off the track.... Lucas, now in Year 8 joined as soon as he could and plans to participate until he is in year 12. Lucas said "We do many things at SRT. We build highly competitive racing vehicles, we train to get physically fit, we practise riding the trikes on tracks, and we work together as a team." Dylan Year 8 was proud to be the first year 7 to join last year. He joined on the very first night after the information session led by Alan Strange and Rachael Beardall (SRT Co-ordinators). Dylan said that being in remote learning has been challenging as he enjoys the practical aspects of SRT; the welding and grinding. But is especially proud of the new seat they are working on which has more than 100 hours invested in its design and construction. Madison in Year 10, has prepared a video for you to enjoy and learn a bit more about SRT from her. https://youtu.be/rsXzRyRLwH0 While in remote learning and not on campus, SRT members receive weekly newsletters and also communicate via Microsoft Teams. Some members have also found ways to be productive while in iso. SRT member Juan has been using his 3D printer to produce components that will be used as soon as work can take place in the SRT Shed again. For more information about SRT and how you can join, visit https://www.damascus.vic.edu.au/life-damascus-sustainable-r #ImPartOfSomethingGreater

16.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest Fight MND On Monday 14 September, Damascus College Year 12 VCAL students organised an Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money and awareness for sufferers of Motor Neuron Disease (MND). MND is the name given to a group of progressive, terminal diseases in which nerve cells (neurones) that control the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow, fail to work normally and eventually die. There is no known cure and no effectiv...e treatment for MND. With the support of our community, our VCAL students were able to raise $2300 in two weeks for FightMND - an organisation headed by former AFL player and MND sufferer and advocate, Neale Daniher. After hearing about the event at Damascus, Neale inspired our students with a personal video message, directly nominating his former schoolmate and Damascus staff member Martin Ryan for the challenge. A big thank you to everyone who contributed and congratulations to the Year 12 VCAL students for hosting such a wonderful day.

15.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest It is our pleasure to introduce our community to our 2021 College Captains, Maya Tolliday and Shaun Leonard. Both Maya and Shaun are exceptional young individuals, whom demonstrate dedication, determination and diligence, and will be wonderful student leaders, as they embark on this new challenge and act as a key voice and representation of our student population, next year.... Good luck to you both, and we look forward to seeing you grow throughout the journey.

14.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #TogetherWeAreDamascus Damascus College has a long and proud tradition, commencing with three foundation colleges dating back to as early as 1881: Sacred Heart College 1881 - 1994 St Paul's Technical College 1948 - 1994... Sacred Heart Senior College, St Martin's in the Pines 1967 -1994 These three foundation colleges amalgamated in 1995 to form Damascus College; the junior campus was located on Victoria Street and the senior campus was located on Geelong Road, Mt Clear. In 2011, these two sites came together on the one Mt Clear location to form the current campus of Damascus College. 2021 marks the 140th anniversary of our college, and we will be proud to celebrate this milestone throughout 2021. We are looking forward to our Gala Night in 2021, where the community will be invited. Visit us online to keep up to date with our 140 year celebratory events. Past students and staff of Sacred Heart College, St Paul’s Technical College, St Martin’s in the Pines and Damascus College are encouraged to update your details to stay connected. https://www.damascus.vic.edu.au/news-e/140-year-anniversary

14.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest Today at Damascus we have time travelled as our students have commenced their 2021 Classes. The Early Start Program is an opportunity for our students to get excited about new classes, staff and timetables. It is a chance for our students to get an early start on their 2021 curriculum. At a time when enthusiasm for school can be low, this is a time for students to be reenergised. The work covered in the next week will be assessed as p...art of the Semester 1 work for 2021. The Early Start Program is also when new students to Damascus can join us on campus for the first time. It is when they get their timetable, locker and wear their Damascus College uniform for the first time. It is when they catch up with old friends or make some new ones. Our beautiful Damascus campus is a place of progressive and innovative learning and teaching that supports students to maximise their outcome. Good luck to all our students and staff as today they step into the Early Start Program.

13.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest On Monday 16th November the Year 11 VCAL Personal Development students travelled to the Soup Bus. Here they were met by Lorraine Gittings who provided students with information as well as allowing them to tour the bus. The students have been researching the topic of ‘Youth Homelessness,’ analysing articles and looking at ways to raise awareness and give back to a community in need. In conjunction with the Work Related Skills class, the students have been busy making items for an upcoming Christmas Market that will see all proceeds go to assisting the Soup Bus to purchase items such as long life milk, non-perishable foods and fuel for the bus. #ImPartOfSomethingGreater

11.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest For many people in Ballarat, there will be no Christmas lunch and no presents under the tree this year - only fear for the future. The St Vincent De Paul Society urgently needs your help to reach those in need before they reach breaking point this Christmas. This year Vinnies have teamed up with local suppliers to be able to provide Christmas lunch to those who might otherwise miss out. Country Roast and Country Kitchen are going to p...rovide these meals based on vouchers that will be worked out with Vinnies. Damascus College is supporting this amazing work through a casual clothes day on Thursday 3 December, where the collection of $2 per student will be added to the tally for St Vincent de Paul. We are also encouraging Teacher Advisor Groups to find creative COVID-safe ways to raise funds to support the appeal. For more information on how you can support this amazing cause, please visit donate.vinnies.org.au/christmas-appeal Poster design by Year 11 student and Justice Action Group (JAG) member, Amber Kennett. #ImPartofSomethingGreater

10.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest In 2020 as a consequence of COVID restrictions we celebrate Damascus Day differently, as we cannot gather together as a school community. Damascus Day is an important day in the life of our college. It is a day where we celebrate our identity as a Catholic, co-educational secondary school. It is a day where we recognise those who had the foresight and who laboured to provide us the opportunity and facilities that exist - parents, par...ishioners, priests, religious brothers and sisters that created the buoyant community that is Damascus College in 2020. We also wish to introduce the 2021 College Captains, Maya Tolliday and Shaun Leonard. Congratulations to you both.

09.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest R U OK Day Today is R U OK Day. It’s our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? if someone in your world is struggling with life’s ups and downs. In asking RU OK it is important that we provide our students with the 4 steps that guide them in this conversation.

09.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest A Damascus winter wonderland today.

09.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest A message from the Damascus College Principal, regarding return to onsite learning for Term 4 2020. Dear Damascus families,... Over the past fortnight there has been substantive media commentary on the return to school in Term 4. I just thought I would take this opportunity to reiterate the following dates to support our community as we approach Term 4. Damascus Dates are consistent with the advice of the Victorian Government and the Department of Health and Human Services. Monday 5th October Term 4 commences and all students resume remote learning. Wednesday 7th October - students studying a VCE Unit 3/4 subject will undertake the General Achievement Test (GAT) onsite at Damascus. Specific correspondence has been emailed to families and students. Monday 12th October Year 7, 11, 12 and those Year 10 students who have a VCE class on Monday 12th will return to onsite learning. Tuesday 13th October all students return to onsite learning. Friday 23rd October AFL Grand Final Public Holiday Friday 30th October Yr 12 Final Day Monday 2nd November TA Interview Day (Non-Teaching Day) Tuesday 3rd November Melbourne Cup Public Holiday (replacing Ballarat Show Day) Onsite supervision will be available to those families who have had students supervised onsite between the 5th and 12th October. There are other dates subject to change in the College’s previously published calendar and I will keep the College community informed as these events approach. As families plan to return to onsite learning, students may wear their summer or winter uniform for the first two weeks they are onsite before transitioning to their summer uniform. I wish the community well for these final days of the school holidays. Regards, Matthew Byrne, Principal

09.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest Learning a language gives students the opportunity to gain deep insight into another culture which then fosters tolerance and understanding between people and communities. The skills involved in learning another language can be helpful across all areas of study, as well opening up a range of career options and improving employability upon leaving school. At Damascus College students can choose either French or Indonesian as part of th...e school curriculum from Year 7, and may also take up Arabic for Beginners as an after school class. Students who elect to continue with their language studies in Year 10 have the option to immerse themselves further into French or Indonesian through Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). CLIL programs provide additional exposure to foreign language by integrating Humanities with French or Indonesian. This in turn allows senior students to embark on VCE Language studies with greater confidence. #ImReadyToTakeOnAnything See more

08.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest To continue our posts on the amazing staff that make up the Damascus Community, today we hear from Simon Carroll, a familiar face in the student reception. I started at Damascus College at the beginning of 2014 after my children gave me permission to accept a position at their school. If I had full creative rights over my job title, it would be something like The King of Cold Packs, or The Baron of Band-Aids but I don’t, so I d...efer to my formal title, which is First Aid Officer. It is a varied role that focuses on the provision of First Aid for the students, staff and visitors at Damascus College. This includes treating and referring all kinds of injuries, illnesses and assorted other problems; managing medications; lots of documentation and communication, training staff in my sub-role of anaphylaxis supervisor; helping staff meet the needs of students in their care and keeping an eye on first aid supplies around the school. The highlight of my job is that I get to feel helpful on a regular basis. As a first aider, that help is occasionally very significant. Working with such a diverse population is not always easy but it is incredibly interesting and rewarding. One way or another you get a lot of feedback, especially from the students, so there’s lots of opportunity to refine your practice to ensure that as many as possible feel safe and supported in your care. One of the biggest challenges is knowing that when something worrying happens to someone else, many eyes turn to you and you have a duty of care that means you have no choice but to take it on. You need to be equipped to handle the situation in front of you, in a way that doesn’t escalate the stress levels of those around you. Couple that with trying to negotiate the breadth of expectations of care from the very diverse range of families and teachers of the student body and you have a job that really keeps you on your toes. 2020 has been a trying year for millions of people all over the world and although lots of things changed for me, all in all I have more to be thankful for than not. I’m pretty sure I faced the least change of anyone at Damascus and am still in awe at how everyone else adapted. During the lockdown periods I could keep turning up to school with a similar routine to usual. I had to figure out how to do a few things I wasn’t used to doing but apart from having to spend a lot of time by myself, it was a pretty positive experience. Because sick bay wasn’t nearly as hectic, it gave me some valuable time to catch my breath ahead of the second return to school, which has been by far the busiest period I have ever faced while working at the College. Well done to you all for getting through a crazy, challenging year and I hope you get to enjoy a well-earned break. Simon from Sick bay, over and out. #InThisTogether See more

06.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #InThisTogether Letters Against ISO (LAISO) was started way back in February 2020. Hannah Senior who is the Social Service Captain at The Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School began by calling up aged-care facilities across Victoria and finding a small group of students who were interested in writing to them. The first aim of this organisation was to help bridge the gap between young people and the elderly, building connections via pen and paper. Th...is idea has gained momentum. Learn more and sign up at http://lettersagainstiso.com On Wednesday as students began Damascus Day in TA our College captains invited our community to become a part of the challenge. LAISO is a student-based initiative in association with the Justice Action Group. We are joining with other schools across Victoria. The hope is that many students will become a part of this rewarding work for social justice. It flows out of our Christian commitment to all people in need and represents a positive response to the directive of the fourth commandment: Honour your father and your mother. Students are asked to encourage their family members to join in and be active in supporting those in aged-care in this simple and effective way. As College Captain and LAISO Ambassador Hannah Mroczkowski says We hope that you will take this opportunity to spread some joy in the community and continue to live in the Mercy tradition. #ImPartOfSomethingGreater

05.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest Congratulations to all the crews who competed in the BCC Vs DMAC friendly regatta and the very first Omnium regatta this past weekend. On Saturday, the juniors raced at Lake Wendouree against Ballarat & Clarendon College for some friendly fun competition. Such a great opportunity to gain some more experience, improve and have some fun. ... In a new style of racing on Sunday, the Omnium Regatta, the senior boys held their own and passed three crews, as well as holding off numerous boats chasing behind them. The inter boys and girls also did exceptionally well with the inter boys placing 4th in their division, and the inter girls placing 2nd, 3rd and 3rd in their divisions. It was a big weekend for Damascus rowing and a fantastic effort from everyone. Keep up the hard work, Go DC!!! Olivia Reyntjes Angus Shillito DMAC Rowing Captains

03.01.2022 #DamascusCollege #DamascusPride #BeMyBest Unicorn Lane Gallery Congratulations to Year 11 student Charlotte Grimes whose photography work is currently on show at the Unicorn Lane Gallery in Ballarat. Charlotte said she was inspired by the raw portraiture of Steve McCurry, and the imaginative artworks by surrealist painters such as Salvador Dali. This developed into her keen interest for surrealistic portraiture. ... I have been exploring how we all have a unique approach to navigating the human condition, yet we are forever connected to each other by the emotional landscape that we share, she said. My series of images entitled ‘The Ineffable’ are of household chores in nature and have been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. With three in particular, I wanted to highlight that our worlds have been turned inside out, where our existence is now defined by our homes and the natural landscapes around us. Charlotte is studying accelerated photography at Damascus College and the photos chosen were part of her photography tasks from the last 18 months. It means a lot to me to be able to have this opportunity, and has made me more confident about my artwork," she said. "The process of curating photos for my exhibition, and seeing them on display in the gallery, confirmed to me that I have been developing my own style over the last year and a half. I have found this experience really valuable in confirming my artistic direction for surrealistic portraiture. Well done Charlotte. #FindMyCalling
