24.01.2022 The common spade foot frog (Neobatrachus sudellae), a burrowing Australian frog mostly found through its arid interior. They spend most of their time burrowed underground to avoid dehydration, and given some rain, they emerge and will take the chance to breed. Neobatrachus are also special because some species are polyploids (having more than the standard two versions of chromosomes). This large flightless beast is a ratite (relative to ostriches, rheas, kiwis and emus), and lives in northern Queensland, southern New Guinea and some Indonesian islands. There are no vipers (snakes in the family Viperidae: adders, rattlesnakes, etc...) in Australia, and most of the snake diversity is made of elapid snakes (Elapidae: cobras, coral snakes and relatives). The death adder is an elapid snake that evolved a convergent morphology and ecology with vipers: its short and stocky body, wide head, short tail used in caudal luring and its sit-a...nd-wait ambush predatory strategy makes it hard to believe it is not actually a viper! They are also one the world's most venomous snakes. 06.01.2022 Flash of colours: Cobalt-winged parakeets (Brotogeris cyanoptera) congregating at a clay lick in Yasuni National Park in the Ecuadorian amazon. Parrots in the amazon congregate at these eroded sites to eat clay, and scientists thinks this is either to compensate for a sodium deficiency in their diet or to absorb toxins found in the plants they eat, but it seems the first theory is correct (or might be a combination of both).
