25.01.2022 Happy beginning of NAIDOC week and what a happy day it is! @naidocweek This week we listen to and celebrate the voices and stories of First Nations Peoples. We are keeping up with some great events & stories on ABC Indigenous and of course you can join us at Dna this week and next in supporting the The Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The money we raise together will go towards gifting engaging and culturally relevant books to remote Indigenous communities. It also helps fund... the publication of Indigenous stories which you can purchase at the ILF website for little ones of your own - if you do, please tag us! We would love to see the ways in which you are introducing culturally diverse conversations into your home #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #NAIDOC2020

23.01.2022 For many, December is an exciting time to be spent with friends and family. For others, the festive season is a particularly vulnerable time when it comes to our mental health and well-being. Lifeline Tasmania provide ongoing support to Tasmanian's struggling via A Tasmanian Lifeline and their 24/7 crisis line. Each day more than 3,000 calls are received. It is anticipated that these calls will increase over the Christmas and New Year period. Lifeline Tasmania work throughout... the entire state delivering suicide prevention and postvention programs including 24/7 telephone crisis support via their 13 11 14 crisis line, Suicide Bereavement Groups, workplace training programs in suicide prevention and suicide related clinical supervision. Their team of dedicated staff and more than 400 volunteers share a common vision: a Tasmania free of suicide. Lifeline Tasmania are reliant on the goodwill and generosity of our local community. $39 funds the cost of a call to the crisis line 13 11 14. A donation of $100 subsidises suicide first aid training for one person. The team at Dna are proud to support Lifeline Tasmania now and in the month of December and hope our customers will join us, not only in digging a little deeper to fund these life-saving services but in pledging to look after those around us. -- If you are in crisis or having thoughts of suicide you can ring 13 11 14 anytime, 24/7. If you feel alone or need to talk, you can reach out to A Tasmanian Lifeline for support on 1800 98 44 34 between 8am and 8pm, 7 days a week. An interpreting service for people who do not speak English is available for both phone lines. To access this service please call TIS on 131 450 and ask to talk to Lifeline on 13 11 14 or A Tasmanian Lifeline on 1800 98 44 34 in the language required. TIS will call Lifeline on behalf of the caller.

22.01.2022 We are proud to announce that together with the help of our generous customers we raised a total of $2,440.30 for the The Indigenous Literacy Foundation! $1,714.89 is donated by Dna with $725.41 raised by our customers, either by matching our donation listed at the end of each bill, or by providing a custom donation. Our donation will be put to work to fund the distribution of culturally appropriate and engaging books to Indigenous communities, as well as the publication an...d sharing of Indigenous stories by Indigenous authors of all ages. You can purchase such stories at the ILF website for little ones of your own and bring the conversation into your home. A big, hearty thank you to our Dna community

21.01.2022 Each year more than 200 million new cases of malaria are reported. 70% of deaths are children under 5, and malaria is the worlds single largest killer of pregnant women. No contribution goes further to prevent this disease than insecticide bednets. At Dna we are interested in Effective Altruism which asks: how can I use my resources to help others most? The Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) has been a top ranked charity by organisations such as GiveWell and The Life You Can ...Save consistently since 2012. These nonprofit and effective altruism-focused organisations heavily investigate charity groups such as AMF by assessing their cost-effectiveness of giving, monitoring of distribution, impact of results, long-term sustainability and central costs - rather than traditional metrics alone such as the percentage of the organisations budget spent on overheads. AMF works to prevent the spread of malaria by distributing long-lasting, insecticide-treated mosquito nets to susceptible populations in developing countries. We spoke to the CEO & Founder of AMF, Rob Mather who said: "Our work focuses on the highest burden malaria areas where the need and impact of the nets we fund and distribute is greatest. 100% of the funds we receive from you buys nets - not a cent comes off the top as we have very low overheads which are already covered. We are able to provide detailed impact numbers as we know; every AUD3,000 we receive equate to 1 life saved, 500 to 1,000 cases of malaria averted and an economic impact in local communities of AUD36,000 (12 x the donation amount)." We will be donating a portion of our profits to the Against Malaria Foundation and hope you join us in doing so. Every customer that dines at Dna will be given the opportunity to match our small donation, provide a custom donation or simply dine! With so much happening online it can be hard to know how to give effectively, and to who. For more info on AMF or to find further charities recommended by GiveWell and the Life You Can Save, visit their websites: www.thelifeyoucansave.org.au www.givewell.org

18.01.2022 With this week being Homelessness week in Australia we thought it was an apt time to tell you about an aspect of the work we are doing here at Dna! As much as we are passionate about hospitality we believe there is room in our industry to do a little more. We will be donating a percentage of our profits to a charity or not-for-profit organisation over a rotational period, with our current partner being Mara House here in Tasmania. Mara House provides 24-hour supported a...ccomodation for young women aged 13-20 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The team at Mara House aim to support the girls to transition into long term housing outcomes with the skills necessary to live independently. A holistic approach is taken to supporting residents with anything from learning how to wash clothes, cook or clean to guidance in building healthy relationships or providing support in a mental health crisis. In 2018-19 Mara House supported 42 young women, the majority of whom sought assistance as a result of relationship/family breakdown. 65.6% of those women had been diagnosed with mental ill-health. We are proud to partner with the team at Mara House and learn about the work that is done and help that is needed both at Mara as well as here in Australia on a national level. When you dine at Dna you will be given the option to match our small donation, provide a custom donation or simply dine - your support in joining us means we are able to give, and at the very least raise awareness of the issues that need attention in our community. For a list of resources or to find events happening in Hobart throughout Homelessness Week 2020 visit the website: www.sheltertas.org.au See more

Pro cyclist Nathan Earle Team Ukyo is joining us in raising funds for Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania by racing an 'Everesting Challenge' - cycling the equivalent elevation of Mount Everest at race pace. A donation of $50 provides one food box, the average contents of which last for approximately 10 days. The Food Box program offers a ...short-term and dignified solution to meeting immediate basic needs. What a legend - and all for a good cause! Click on the fundraising link below to show your support or watch him roll off at 7:30am Monday the 12th at The Lea, Gilwell Drive.

13.01.2022 We're sending hugs to all those who can finally reunite with family and loved ones. It's such an exciting time! However, the reopening of the borders is a little scary for us in this industry and we're putting a call out for a little added help in ensuring we play our part. We are having a small issue with late arrivals.... When guests arrive anywhere from 10-30 minutes late to their booking, it means their sitting time is reduced and the flow of the night's design is disrupted. Our share-style of food often does not lend to being squeezed into this smaller time frame. This results in unhappy customers (both those already dining and those arriving). Those who arrive and have to wait add to the number of guests in our venue- which is still limited by capacity restrictions. We want to do the right thing by our hard-working staff and the community in whole who have tried so hard to do the right thing, too. Please be respectful by arriving and exiting on time. We run via sitting times: Groups 1-4: 1h 45 min sittings Groups 5+: 2h sittings Longer sitting times are available upon request - just ask! No shows are never fun, but if you call or text to let us know you won't make it - it means we can take a walk in that we otherwise couldn't due to capacity restrictions! Bookings are strongly recommended to avoid disappointment, but we ourselves love the spontaneity of wandering into a restaurant on a whim. Walk-ins will be asked to complete our digital COVID-19 tracing form. As we welcome our friends from interstate and particularly as we move into the silly season we ask for your continued cooperation. We want to follow the rules, keep our amazing staff in work, keep our customers smiling + end the year on a high! Thank you xx

10.01.2022 In solidarity and support of fellow Tasmanian, Grace Tame's recent nomination and naming as 2021 Australian of The Year for her campaign and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault, Dna Eating House will be donating a percentage of our profits to both Bravehearts Australia and the Kids Helpline over the next few weeks. Bravehearts is Australia's leading child protection organisation, providing counselling and support for those affected by child sexual assault. Braveheart...s operate tirelessly via The 3 Piers to Prevention (educate, empower, and protect), a culmination of intensive research into how to reduce the incidence and ultimately, prevent the occurrence of child sexual assault and exploitation. Should a child or loved one disclose, Bravehearts is available for contact on 1800 272 831 and will provide you with support and advice about how to proceed to protect and support your loved one. Kids Helpline is Australia's only free, private and confidential 24/7 online and phone counselling service for young people aged 5-25. For some young people, connecting with Kids Helpline has been a life-saving experience, while for others it's about practical help and emotional support at the critical moment they need someone to listen - any time, any reason. No problem is too big or too small. Kids Helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1800 55 1800 or via email counselling at [email protected]. All children have a right to be safe, healthy and happy. 08.01.2022 Charities tell us that period products are the last thing to be donated -- but the first thing to be taken by those in need. Share the Dignity was founded after identifying a genuine need to provide vulnerable women in our community with essential sanitary products. It was reported that these women are often forced to choose between buying food to eat or buying expensive sanitary items to get through their periods (we all know - these necessities aren’t cheap). Women and c...hildren, either homeless or in shelters, were having to clean themselves in public toilets and use paper towels to create makeshift sanitary pads. This is not and should never be okay. Share the Dignity works to make a real, on the ground difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or doing it tough. Through item donations and monetary donations like ours, Share the Dignity distribute period products (pads, maternity pads, incontinence pads, new reusable pads, tampons, period-proof underwear and menstrual cups) to charities and shelters in need, thereby work to end period poverty here in Australia. The team at Dna Eating House are proud to support Share the Dignity and their mission of ensuring that everyone is afforded the dignity in life that so many of us take for granted. Every customer who dines with us will have the opportunity to match our small donation, provide a custom donation, or simply dine and allow us to pay it forward on their behalf. Please note: we cannot accept physical sanitary items, but if you wish to donate in this way please visit www.sharethedignity.com.au to learn about their ‘Dignity Drive’ and find a collection point near you! 03.01.2022 The recent pandemic hit our industry hard. Those of us who managed to find some stability, form of income and emotional support are incredibly grateful, but unfortunately this was not the reality for all. Many members of our hospitality community are temporary visa holders for whom the impacts of COVID-19 were particularly devastating- and we know that these impacts are still felt today. They are our colleagues, and in this industry they are our brothers and sisters. We are w...holly committed to supporting migrant members of our community by contributing towards an inclusive and culturally diverse society. Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC) is a not-for-profit organisation that supports and empowers migrants and refugees to settle and live fulfilling lives in Tasmania through various services and projects. One such project is The MRC Tas Social Enterprise Kitchen: a social enterprise project providing pathways to employment for people from migrant backgrounds. Participants undertake practical workplace experience, furthering training and employment opportunities in the hospitality industry. Since early May, MRC Tas has been providing weekly staple food boxes to temporary visa holders and other migrants who are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19. The boxes contain nutritious and culturally appropriate food that can be prepared at home. With support from donors, MRC Tas has been able to deliver up to 60 food boxes per week. This offers a short term and dignified solution to meeting immediate basic needs. The establishment and continuation of this service would not be possible without support from donors. A donation of $50 will provide a food box, the average contents of which will last for approximately 10 days. The team at Dna are proud to partner with MRC Tas and contribute towards their Food Box Program. We hope our customers will join us and dig a little deeper for those experiencing hardship in our community. Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania

02.01.2022 "Many of us take it for granted that our first experience with books will be in the language we speak. But this is not the everyday experience for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children." - Denise Angelo, linguist/literacy consultant on Binjari Buk series, Australian National University Being able to read opens so many doors. But in very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are significantly lower than anywhere else in Austr...alia. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) works with more than 30 publishers to gift engaging and culturally relevant books to schools, libraries, playgroups, women's centres, youth centres and other service organisations that use books in different ways. So far, the ILF have gifted more than 440,000 new books to over 400 remote Indigenous communities where books are scarce, with a further 97,100 gifted in 2020. The team at Dna Eating House believe in equal education opportunities for everyone. We are proud to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and hope our customers join us in offering children in remote Indigenous communities equity of opportunity and contribute towards closing the literacy gap.
