20.01.2022 SPIRITUALITY AND BIRTH I am always very careful about using the word Spiritual, there is so much interpretation of the word and certainly can feel a bit to "alternative" for some people. I think Spirituality is all about believing in a greater power, something beyond this world and our reality of limitations.... In Birth women go beyond what they believe their limits are. The pain takes them beyond what they think they can process. The feat and enourmity of their body opening to birth the miracle of new life and closing up again is far greater than they ever imagined was possible. A power they never knew they had, that has always been within them. Birthing is the most profound initiation to spirituality a woman can have. Don't underestimate the power of the right of passage into the greatest spiritual journey of your life, whatever that means to you. You have to choose it and then let go so you can experience it

16.01.2022 DELAYED CORD CLAMPIMG Delayed cord clamping allows the blood from the placenta to continue being transferred to the baby even after they are born. This means that the baby could receive up to 214g of cord blood, which is about 30% more blood than they would have without it. The benefits of this include:... increased iron levels in the baby even up until they are six months old which helps with growth and both physical and emotional development. increased amount of stem cells, which helps with your baby’s growth and helps with their immune system. and much more! Unless there is medical indication - put your fingers around your cord and if you feel it pulsing its not ready to be cut. I see this process rushed constantly in birth! Even when the birth has gone perfectly there is always a rush to clamp and cut the cord. It your cord, dont cut it until you are ready. FEEL FOR THE PULSE!

14.01.2022 LATE PREGNANCY POSTERIOR PRESENTATION I get alot of calls about this from women late in pregnancy - 36 to 40 weeks - worried about their baby being Posterior after an OB or midwifery appointment / The reason for worry being that Posterior labours (along with Induction Labours) are well known to be the longest and hardest labours and often end with epidurals, instrumental births or c section. WHAT IS POSTERIOR PRESENTATION?... There are many positions your baby can present in, but to keep it simple for tonight: If your baby's spine lines up to your spine its a Posterior Presentation or commonly called "Spines". If your baby's spine is away from your spine (ideally to the left or front of your belly) its an Anterior Presentation THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW: * Its normal for your baby to engage in a posterior position at 36 - 38 weeks, it doesn't mean you are guaranteed to have a Posterior labour - have no idea why OBs don't tell women that. * Babies navigate the engagement and descent, with the space available to them, and can change positions over night - I have had clients come out of appointments with anterior presentations and then start spontaneous labour the next day posterior and vice versa. * An experienced Doula trained in Spinning Babies and OMP (Optimal Maternal Positioning) can help spot a Posterior baby in early labour from the contraction patterns and help you into positions to help you move your baby WHAT CAN I DO BEFORE LABOUR BEGINS TO HELP MOVE MY BABY FROM POSTERIOR? * Your baby's spine is the heaviest part of their muscular skeletal system. Think Gravity!!! Get on all fours when your baby is awake and moving. * 3 x 10 squats a day opens and balances the ligaments in the pelvis and lengthens the pelvic floor to create space for your baby - sit in a squat position as often as you can. * Spinning Babies / OMP Side Lying release - 5 mins each side - relaxes pelvic floor to make space for your baby to turn https://youtu.be/-e4EXjcN7yE * Spinning Babies Forward Leaning Inversion - 2 inversions a day to lengthen uterine ligaments and help your baby tuck their chin to settle into a more optimal position https://youtu.be/uMdary6tL-g * Some women actually birth prosterior babies just fine I've seen it happen. It's normal for them and their baby. ## MY BIGGEST TIP ## Work on creating balance from early on in pregnancy. Get onto the Spinning Babies website and download the Parent Class, it is exponentially better than a hospital antenatal class. You need to understand your baby's journey through the pelvis and how to create balance and space in the body where your baby is trying to navigate - Engage a Doula with Spinning Babies or OMP training and experience or have your birth support person understand how to apply manouvers in labour that can help you move your baby. https://www.spinningbabies.com//parent-class-video-digita/

09.01.2022 CABBAGE LEAVES FOR ENGOREMENT / BREASTFEEDING Breast engorgement is so uncomfortable that it can be difficult to even think straight. While engorgement usually goes away on its own after a day or two, no one would blame you for needing some relief in the meantime. Mastitis can be more challenging and needs more TLC and time. A 2012 cochrane review of studies supports the idea that cabbage leaves are a reliable way to find the relief you need. The review found that using... cabbage leaves reduced the pain and hardness of engorged breasts and made it easier for people to continue breastfeeding for longer. Here's exactly how to use cabbage leaves for relief from symptoms of engirgement and mastitis: HOW TO USE THE CABBAGE Here’s exactly how to use cabbage leaves for relief from symptoms of mastitis and engorgement: Clean, dry, and chill several cabbage leaves for each breast that you want to treat. (You don’t have to treat both breasts at the same time, or at all, if one is more or less affected than the other.) You may want to remove or soften the hard vein of each leaf, or cut the leaves into large pieces, for comfort and flexibility. Place the cabbage leaves on your breasts, covering the entire surface area of your breasts. You should keep your nipples bare, especially if they’re sore, cracked, or bleeding. (Use a lanolin cream if your nipples need some extra TLC.) Hold the cabbage leaves on your breasts or slide a loose-fitting bra over them to keep them from moving around. Once the cabbage leaves begin to feel warm or it’s been 20 minutes, remove them. Discard the cabbage leaves. Wash your breasts gently if you want. Don’t reuse the same leaves if you repeat the treatment again later. HOW DOES IT WORK Cabbages contain glucosinolates. Enzyme action converts these to pungent isothiocyanates, collectively referred to as mustard oil. And mustard oil has long been used as a home remedy for swelling. my gorgeous client today for our post natal visit, her milk coming in for her beautiful big baby boy x

08.01.2022 VERTICAL BIRTH Understand the physiology that makes the most difference in outcome Less than 15% of birthing women in Australia give birth in a standing and/or vertical position.... This is due to the large use of anesthesia, technology, fetal monitoring, interventions, convenience for the Obstertrician and the feeling of not having a choice in birthing positions. : the need for pain medication decreases labour is shorter pelvic space is increased by up to 30% which aids natural descent and rotation of baby it’s the best position to aid physiological birth better blood flow to baby which decreases the chances of fetal distress decreases the need for emergency cesarean, episiotomy, vacuum or forceps less likely to need medical help helps aid the natural urge to bear down once you are fully dilated and effaced contractions are more effective gravity aids the progression of baby going down into the pelvis and out of the birth canal birthing parents overall satisfaction of the birth increases I love this photo! It really shows how a Doula is present as a birth support role. Having a Doula does not interfere with the intimacy and bond you have with you partner, infact it increases it! You can't hug and hang from your partner as well as have him help with counter pressure and hip squeezing at the same time. : @sarahvogeldoula

06.01.2022 This takes 2 mins! Make your voice heard to move towards the change that is so desperately needed in our maternity care system Ellie Heasman thanks for sending this out!...

06.01.2022 Birth Matters... It matters because it is the way we all begin our lives outside of our source, our mother's bodies. It's the means from which we enter and feel our first impression of the wider world. For each mother, it is an event that shakes and shapes her to her innermost core. Women's perceptions about their bodies and their babies' capabilities will be deeply influenced by the care they receive around the time of birth. Ina May Gaskin

05.01.2022 An absolutely incredible birth I had the honour of supporting yesterday. 4.845kg baby birthed powerfully and beautifully and it could not have been any more spectacular! Royal North Shore Public Hospital - Room 6 mural an opening flower x

04.01.2022 TANDEM FEEDING This celebrity mumma (Bekah Martinez) shared a photo tandem feeding her two children and she has received so many messages claiming her older child is stealing the milk from her baby and that it’s taking away from what her baby needs. This is just another example of how when we don’t see something very often (or ever!) in society, we don’t actually understand and make assumptions without trying to get the information first! Our bodies are able to get ...pregnant when breastfeeding and feed more than one child at a time. We are biologically designed this way. Tandem feeding does not harm baby or toddler. You make enough for each child and you also make what each child needs. Our bodies are amazing. #factsnotfear #keeponboobin

02.01.2022 SKIN TO SKIN WITH DAD Don't forget about the daddy skin to skin time. Its so beautiful. Whether it is after mum has had the first breastfeed and is having a shower, or while waiting for mum to come from recovery after a c section birth, skin to akin with dad begins a bond that neurologically, hormonally & physiologically, begins his transition into fatherhood.... Don't forget about Dad
