23.01.2022 Bad behaviour never goes away on its own. In fact the more it is practiced the more it manifests. Heard the saying practice makes perfect? Those small minor of...fences such as barging out through the door, pulling on the lead, pulling to sniff at that one tree, scratching at the door to be let in, fence running at the neighbours dog, jumping on people (My personal pet peeve - I’ve had 2 fat lips in 2 days from dogs at the park...) crying when left alone, will almost certainly lead to major offences such as explosions on lead, uncontrollable energy, incessant barking, seperation anxiety and the list goes on. These are all symptoms of a bigger problem, a lack of leadership, rules, boundaries & sometimes a lack of exercise & enrichment. Your dog requires a daily amount of exercise & enrichment. Your dog requires a consistent daily amount of rules/boundaries until they start making the right decisions on their own. Your dog requires an amount of love & affection based on it having been earned. Whilst you may see me giving out love/pats/praise/treats to a dog....it must have ALWAYS first earned these things from me. Exercise, Rules, boundaries, calm always come first before any free love is given. None of the dogs I see are lacking in the ‘love’ department. They are all suffering the effects of its over indulgence. When a dog only see’s its owners permissive side, the side that coodles, spoils, dishes out treats and you neglect to follow through with any rule setting, you are allowing & giving your dog the green light to act like a jerk. Without enforcing rules & boundaries in any social group there’s going to be chaos. Dogs are opportunistic and any lack of commitment on your part (I was in a rush to get out the door - letting your dog drag you out opposed to enforcing a sit & wait) lack of consistency or follow through will ensure your dog takes full advantage & will undermine you in terms of the way your dog views your ability to take control. So why would they listen to you? Start setting some rules, stop dishing out the free love & be consistent. When your dog realises there are repercussions to their bad behaviours & they don’t achieve what they want through being pushy & bratty, watch how they start making better decisions. Nothing in life is free right? Take control, your dogs depend on you. ~Emma~ Photography thanks to Sam Gilmore Sam Gilmore Photography

06.01.2022 Despite a global pandemic, it still looks like the year will end with a bang with fireworks in lots of places tonight. So it might be smart to brace yourself fo...r a last minute pet panic pandemic. Yes, New Years Eve might be a party on two legs (even if you’re not going out), but on four, it might just be the most frightening night of the year. In fact, the number of lost and injured pets increases by 400%. But there are ways to manage the fear brought on by fireworks and it’s starts now! Here’s what you can do... 1. Go for a solid walk (or run) in the late afternoon/early evening if it’s cool enough to do so. This exercise lowers anxiety levels, releases relaxing endorphins and makes them more inclined to sleep. 2. Bring pets inside. Those fireworks bangs will make them want to bolt for it so a fence will often be no match and tying them up only causes more injuries. 3. Put blinds down, lights on and put music on. Research has shown that classical music is best. This is all about blocking out those stressful sights and sounds. 4. Put a load of washing on. Preferably a long cycle. These familiar and repetitive vibrations from the washing machine drown out the vibrations from the fireworks that are a huge source of stress. 5. Give them a place to hide. Dogs will want to ‘den’ so a pile of cushions, pillows or old mattresses they can lie in will make them feel safe. What about cats? While they don’t enjoy the fireworks, they’re more inclined to seek shelter rather than take flight like dogs. Keep them inside and they’ll love you forever. Good luck tonight. Thanks for the support in 2020 and Happy(er) New Year for 2021! I think we all deserve it...

05.01.2022 With a heatwave coming it's always important to remember the surface temperature when deciding to take your pup for a walk, even when the sun goes down the asph...alt, sand and concrete still retain heat! I am always flabbergasted to see the amount of poor dogs being walked, or more accurately dragged, when it's hot! Give it a miss, include some extra enrichment activities into their routine and they will thank you for it, walking your dog is not the be all and end all of dog ownership and in these temperatures it's just plain irresponsible! Break out the Kongs, the interactive feeders, heck even hiding some dry food or treats in egg cartons is something to keep your pup entertained in the hot! Remember to always leave fresh water available to your pets and educate yourself on the risks and signs of heatstroke! Stay safe Adelaide
