12.01.2022 Advantage is a better soldier than rashness. Henry V, Act III, Scene 6 We’re killing Dark Mofo for the year. I know that will murder an already massacred tourism environment, but I feel like I have no choice (hint: that means I have a choice)....Continue reading

07.01.2022 A million candles burning. I’ve been thinking a lot about Dark Mofo this week. Partly because it’s sad, and we miss it already. Partly because it’s almost winter and the nights are getting longer, and partly because next year will be difficult. We’ll be up against COVID 19, international air travel restrictions, a tough economy, and Melbourne’s new winter festival. Our costs will skyrocket (and we normally love skyrockets), making it harder for us, and our audience. ... Our concept for the upcoming festival was ‘death’. Unfortunately, it’s no longer a concept, which isn’t as much fun as we’d hoped. So we are in mourning, for a festival we’ve lost (the funeral was capped at 10) and most likely for a festival that will never be the same. But, we won’t be going gently into that good night. It’s a time for a rebirth. I have a feeling that it won’t be like it was. To quote Yeats: ‘Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand.’ And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?’ I’m not sure what the beast will look like, but it will be smaller, more intense and much, much darker. 04.01.2022 It’s been a wild, challenging and difficult year. Not unlike every year since joining Mona! This one seemed harder, with lots of change. With some time to reflect, I want to say that I am really grateful to every single person that has contributed to Dark Mofo, DarkLab or supported me in someway over the past decade. Especially my family, DW and the DarkLab team. I’m also extremely proud of what the relatively ‘old’ team achieved with Dark Mofo over the past decade, and wha...t the relatively ‘new’ team have achieved in the past few months. They are all important to me, talented and hard working. On the other hand, nothing is going to matter much if we can’t reverse climate change. It became very real to me this time last year as we watched the Huon Valley (and 3% of Tasmania) burn. Now as we (celebrate?) the new year, we watch in horror as other parts of Australia are burning to the ground too. The new year is supposed to be a time of hope, but it feels pretty hopeless right now. I have faith that we can turn it around, I guess we’re going to find out over the next decade whether we’re prepared to pay the price. For now, everything else feels a bit meaningless. Happy New Year everyone, but mostly thinking about the people who are doing it tough. Leigh Carmichael 1.1.2020
