11.01.2022 Girls' friendships can be complicated. If your daughter is starting at a new school or has reached an age where friendships are a challenge, she might need ext...ra support. Here at Girl Guides, we've been growing girls' friendships for over 100 years and we're sharing some of our top tips. 1. CREATE OPPORTUNITIES. The one-on-one playdate is the most powerful opportunity for friendship to grow. Birthday or themed parties, or after-school park catch-ups are also great. 2. ADD A PURPOSE. Create purposeful shared activities to take the pressure off a first playdate or hangout. Invite the prospective friend to come and try skating, or bake for a school fair, or go swimming at the local pool. 3. IDENTIFY POTENTIAL FRIENDS. If she's being pushed out by previous friends, go through the full list of classmates with your daughter and get her to identify people she has things in common with or who might make good friends. 4. MODEL GOOD FRIENDSHIP. Show her what it looks like. Catch up with your own friends, support them, remind them why you love them, show them you care with flowers or a phone call, and resist the urge to gossip about other friends. If she sees it, she can be it. 5. UPSKILL HER. If she lacks some of the social skills needed for friendship, try role playing to help her learn how to break into conversations politely and naturally. Practice greetings, invitations to hang out, and talking about shared interests. These things don't come naturally to us all. 6. CONNECT HER UP. School isn't the only place to make friends. Get her into a club or sport where she can form new friendships with people who share her interests.
