25.01.2022 I’ve been sorting out some files the last week or so and it’s been so much fun being reminded of the hundreds of encounters I’ve shared with guests over the years. This image is from the 15th of September 2011 out near Richard’s Patches ... shot on my 5Dmkii (the first full frame underwater setup I had and the first ever DSLR with video). The encounter with this trio was one of those where it feels like the whales don’t want you to leave. BTW I file by date and along with the date of the shoot, I always put some memory words in the folder name. This folder is named 20110915 _awesome_day @pxlexplorer and I can’t wait to add a few more #awesomedays to our tally this year when the @whalesunderwater team takes to the water again. #swimwithwhales

25.01.2022 Happy #EarthDay #thinkgloballyactlocally and remember the awesome work done for the planet by teams like @rainforestrescueau and @gbrlegacy Together they are behind the #rainforest2reef campaign that highlights the need for #RealConservation and a whole-of-system action to reverse the damage done to the connected ecosystems of the Wet Tropics rainforests and Great Barrier Reef. By restoring developed land back into diverse forest, #rainforestrescue helps create natural filtration systems for water runoff, ensuring cleaner water with less nutrients flow down rivers and out to the vulnerable #GreatBarrrierReef

25.01.2022 Whale Season it is! I got a most excellent whale fix today! While we cant be with our Whaley friends in Tonga this year, Im going to reacquaint myself with the East Coasters, who pass by my bit of home coast as they head from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef. These whales were the original source of my addiction, when as staff photographer for the Qld National Parks and Wildlife Service I spent my first days with researchers and rangers photographing flukes from a sma...ll RIB in Hervey Bay in the late 1980s. So today, with Greg Crow at the helm and Jasmine squealing with excitement on the bow, we heading out at first light through the Seaway and were greeted by a few playful pods heading north! It was so good! Having Greg (whos a great photographer himself) as skipper made it all seem very easy... he knows light and angles and lenses so was getting us in just the right spots! Thank you Champion! I cant wait to get out there again, and see who else we can find. I think its my turn to drive next, so Greg can get some pictures! #goldcoast #humpbackwhale #visitgoldcoast #whalewatching #queensland #australia

24.01.2022 How good is this? We’re here on beautiful Lord Howe Island, diving the world’s most southerly coral reef in search of as many endemic species as we can find, with Dr Richard Smith @oceanrealmimages leading the quest! Yesterday we had great dive in Comets Hole which is a fairytail world of light and colour and life just inside the lagoon. #threebandbutterflyfish #fflhiEndemicHunt19 #lordhoweisland @prodivelordhowe @pxlexplorer

24.01.2022 We’ve just spent an aMAZing two weeks in the heart of the #CoralTriangle, totally immersed in an exciting new project with Dr Richard Smith at Wakatobi Dive Resort in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. 23.01.2022 DAY 1 in Palau on #SolitudeOne for #SolitudeOneFrenzy So where are we? To get your bearings, #Palau is in the western Pacific, north of the equator and east of the Philippines, on a small coral archipelago that’s part of the the Caroline Islands chain in Micronesia (near to the Marianas Trench (deepest part of the ocean). We’re here for a week of diving aboard @MVSolitudeOne. Our first day is spent close-by the port town of Koror, easing us into the week ahead. Dive 1 is on ...a casualty of World War II a Japanese Aichi E13A reconnaissance seaplane code-named #JakeSeaplane by the Allied Forces. Dive 2 took us deep inside one of Palau’s limestone islands itself, through 4 linked chambers that together make up #ChandelierCave. Each chamber has an air pocket at the top so we could pop up and have a chat! Dive 3 was another wreck, a small ferry named #HafaAdai our first #NightDive of the trip, full of colour! Day 1 got us off to a fabulous start! #MyTankIsTooSmall I’m not going to be able to keep up with my buddy #JasmineCarey ’cause #SheHasGills so check out her day too over at @Pxlexplorer #MVSolitudeOne #VisitPalau #FotoFrenzy #SolitudeWorld #darrenjew @foto.frenzy.events @pxlexplorersmagazine @FinslapActiveh2o @solitude.world @visitpalau @ Palau

22.01.2022 DAY 3 in Palau on @MVSolitudeOne for #SolitudeOneFrenzy Today’s the day we are to dive Palau’s famed #BlueCorner for the first time, but not until we’ve done an early morning dive at German Channel (very scenic spot to park the boat), known for its cleaning stations bommies. At the right time of year you get mantas availing themselves of cleaning services and reef sharks are also visitors. We were lucky to see one manta fly by, but at the edge of visibility. Others in the gro...up had a close encounter with the same one, and also saw a second behind it. I spent most of the dive at a spot our guide Mitch introduced us to a cute bommie covered in fish and circled by a group of grey reef #sharks. I sat in the one spot for ages just watching the show, it was beautiful and bright and thoroughly entertaining, guessing when the sharks would glide by. Next dive was to Blue Holes a massive cave system entered through one of 4 holes in the reef top and opening into a massive cathedral with light tumbling in and creating an ethereal beauty i won’t forget. Next was famed Blue Corner was to be our first chance to hook: I process local divers developed for divers to attach to the reef edge by a strong hook and line so you can glide stationary in very strong current and watch the show. More about hooking tomorrow suffice to say the Palauan currents were playing tricks on us today, and our Blue Corner dive was virtually current free so instead of hooking we got to hang with fish, fish and more fish! (and a green turtle) Such an awesome, epic day. Three sites today: #GermanChannel , #BlueHoles , #BlueCorner The most challenging shot of the day was the one of Jasmine she was hanging with so many fish, getting a clear moment proved time consuming!!! Make sure you pop over to see her pics from today. @solitude.world @VisitPalau @foto.frenzy.events #mvsolitudeone #VisitPalau #FotoFrenzy #SolitudeWorld #JasmineCarey #SolitudeOne @ Palau

22.01.2022 On the doorstep of Australias norther coast, The Solomon Islands were the scene of intense fighting during World War II, as allied troops countered the offensive launched by Japan in 1942. The 150m-long Japanese transport ship Toa Maru was sunk by an American submarine in November 1943. The Solomons Islands Campaign saw Australian, New Zealand, American, Fijian, Brits and Tongans and Solomon Islanders all work together to keep supply lines in the Pacific Theatre open and ens...uring Australia was spared from invasion. Playing a critical role in the campaign were the Coastwatchers positioned covertly around the islands to provide early warning of Japanese troop movements and to aid downed allied pilots and rescue seaman. It was two Solomon Islander Coastwatchers who found the then Lieutenant John F. Kennedy and his crew where they had came ashore after their patrol boat was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer. Kennedy scratched a message describing their plight on a coconut which was then delivered to his commander by dugout canoe, and they were all rescued shortly after. 21.01.2022 We’ve been dabbling the last few years with using UV lights to photograph biofluorescence underwater. Some marine creatures absorb light in the UV spectrum and then re-emit it in all kinds of psychedelic colours ... which is fascinating from both an artistic and a scientific perspective! You should google the science around it if it sparks your interest, which it should. In its own right this is not a new technique by any stroke of the imagination (yes it even happened befor...e Instagram) but I have a very particular image in mind that is going to be epic if I can pull it off, but I need lots more practice and knowledge between now and attempting that project, so in the meantime I’ll keep experimenting and learning as much as I can about the way organisms absorb and re-emit the light, and how many different ways we can capture and render it to produce the image that’s in my head ... in a way that’s as FULLY EPIC as I visualise it. Thankfully our hosts onboard #mvdardenella are mad-keen art/scientists and it turns out they love a bit of underwater black light photography themselves! So while prepping for #TheCurrent2 expedition in the Solomon Islands earlier this month, we all had a fabulous time playing around in our own sun-aquatic disco. #solomonislands #biofluorescence #pxlexplorer #jasminecarey #darrenjew #visitsolomonislands #alwayslearning @ Solomon Islands

21.01.2022 DAY 5 in Palau on SolitudeOne for #SolitudeOneFrenzy The #SolitudeOne crew had a plan for us to do two dives in the south today, off the island of Peleliu. We’re aiming first for Peleliu Cut, a wild isthmus where the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean currents collide. It's only a 50/50 chance we’ll be able to get in the water even with the best predictions, as the full moon is approaching adding more water movement into the mix, and at this site, there’s a thin blue line b...etween exciting action and outright danger. When we arrive, the tumultuous sea tells us no, not today. So instead, under heavy skies, we dropped into the dark sea and drifted with the current along the reef of Orange Beach. In the early morning of September 15, 1944, US Marines in landing craft crossed this very reef and went ashore under deadly fire onto Orange Beach signaling the start of the Battle of Peleliu, a two month offensive with the aim of capturing the island’s small airstrip from the occupying Japanese. Initially planned as a 3-day battle it turned into two months of fierce fighting that left an estimated 20,000 U.S. and Japanese soldiers dead or injuredincluding Australian wartime photographer Damien Parer, killed by machine-gun fire as he filmed. Drifting over the coral ridges and valleys, the reef was awakening again, just as it did 75 years ago. Above us today only rain drilled the surface. The ocean was hauntingly dark. Waves of snapper, a gang of bump heads, sharks patrolling. After an hour at the whim of the ocean, Mitch deployed the SMB and we bobbed quietly atop the grey sea. Three sites today: #OrangeBeach ; the incredible colour and detail of #BigDropOff ; and some serious hooking with sharks and friends at #Blue Corner Don’t miss @pxlexplorer ’s take on day 5 of our adventure. #mvsolitudeone #VisitPalau #FotoFrenzy #SolitudeWorld #JasmineCarey Solitude Liveaboards & Resorts @ Palau

18.01.2022 Thanks to this really amazing fella, @solar_whisper David White, we had a stunning couple of hours this afternoon on the Lower Daintree River. The Daintree River is important in the #rainforest2reef story. Either side of much of the river has been historically cleared for grazing and sugar cane, and even today, wayward development is causing issues for the river and its creatures, and puts pressure on water quality flowing onto the Great Barrier Reef. Davids guiding and c...ommentary proved to me that he believes in #realconservation . A great supporter and friend of @rainforestrescueau make sure you check out his IG account... and be sure to call in and see for yourself, next time youre in the Daintree... hes right next to the Daintree River ferry (southern side) Thanks again David, twas a brilliant afternoon! 1. 16.01.2022 DAY 7 in Palau on Solitude One for #solitudeonefrenzy Today is our scheduled no-dive day, to ensure all the nitrogen that’s accumulated in our blood during all the #divedivedives this last week has had 24hrs to dissipate before we fly. The Solitude One crew has a very special day on and in the water planned for us, visiting #milkyway #jellyfishlake and a natural rock arch amongst #rockislands.... Jellyfish Lake has been devoid of Jellyfish the last couple of years, rangers believing the loss of the animals was due to a combination of factors including extended dry el Nino conditions and the impact of sunscreen, other chemicals and invasive organisms being brought into the lake by swimmers. But the jellyfish are back, and the rangers now don’t allow visitors to use sunscreen and you are washed down before you climb over the hill over to the lake, to remove outside pests. After we were greeted at the dock by the rangers, we climbed the 160 steps up over the hill and down to the lake. We had the whole place to ourselves which was amazing. I saw my first jellyfish as I entered the brackish water, and as I swam across the lake to the sunny side, the numbers grew until it truly was a lake of jellyfish. Maneuvering amongst the bells and find open water between the mass made for much joy and I was very sad to have to leave We had also visited white clay mud bath of Milky Way, which is said to have rejuvenating properties ... so that was a popular stop, and the skiff ride to natural arch, weaving in and out of channels between the perfectly magical limestone islands topped with tropical forest was both beautiful and thrilling. Thank you to the entire Solitude One team for providing such an amazing live-aboard dive trip. #Last DayBlues And do yourself a favour and pop over and read Jasmine's beautiful words about her dip in #jellyfishheaven Foto Frenzy Visit Palau #mvsolitudeone #VisitPalau #FotoFrenzy #SolitudeWorld #JasmineCarey #SolitudeOne @ Palau

12.01.2022 Began a road trip to North Queensland yesterday, and after a day and 1000kms behind the wheel, first overnight stop was an old favourite. 11.01.2022 A couple of months ago, we went snorkel/exercising in one of the Gold Coast’s creeks and had a beautiful time in clear water surrounded by baitfish and shadowed by 3 eagle rays. To add a little challenge in these times of foolproof camera tech, we dug out a Nikonos V (thanks Gene Kam), added my 15mm UW-Nikkor, and loaded it with a roll of 400iso colour neg film. The light meter isn’t working on the Nikonos so estimating exposure was the order of the day (which goes hand-in-hand with estimating focus distance on this camera, as there’s no focus assistance) it was a wonderful exercise in restraint with just 24 exposures on the roll. 11.01.2022 Our dive guide Danny took us to a favourite spot of his near Gizo, a site called Grand Central Station. Only metres off a tiny, postcardesque pacific island, the reef dropped away into the blue and we descended a fan-clad wall of colour and were surrounded by all manner of fish life. The reef crest was stunning, all shapes of hard corals enjoying the sun-filled shallows- a great spot to while-away our safety stop. 10.01.2022 This little girl would now be six years old. In August 2014 her mum made them at home amongst the islands, and we had a few encounters with the pair. Mum was unique... she would rest perpendicularnose down, with her tail fluke vertical out of the water. For a few days she was in a sheltered channel surrounded by islands, and her tail would appear above the surface on the windward side of the bay, and over the course of a 20 minute breath hold, she would sail with the wind across the bay. Shed then take her breath cycle, disappear under the surface, and appear again, tail up, on the windward side. All the time the little one at her side, sometimes feeding, sometimes playing. Always beautiful. #humpbackwhale #humpback #whale #mumandcalf #tonga #vavau #whalesunderwater #swimwithwhales #darrenjew #darrenjewphotography

09.01.2022 Whale Season it is! I got a most excellent whale fix today! While we can’t be with our Whaley friends in Tonga this year, I’m going to reacquaint myself with the East Coasters, who pass by my bit of home coast as they head from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef. Having Greg (who’s a great photographer himself) as skipper made it all seem very easy... he knows light and angles and lenses so was getting us in just the right spots! Thank you Champion! I can’t wait to get out there again, and see who else we can find. I think it’s my turn to drive next, so Greg can get some pictures! #goldcoast #humpbackwhale #visitgoldcoast #whalewatching #queensland #australia

09.01.2022 Descending onto the bustling reefs of #Wakatobi is beyond comparison. Every single dive is full of absolute wonder. The colour and texture is endless. Each new site has its own nuance, its own special attractions. This site is Magnifica . Warming seas are adversely impacting coral reefs around the world. The temperature changes are too rapid for corals to adapt. Lets try and slow down the heat and make sure we dont loose all these wonderlands. ... Everything you do to reduce your ecological footprint takes pressure off the planets systems, so those that are doing it, keep up the good work... those that arent there is no better time than NOW to #ThinkGloballyActLocally Shot during the making of our latest project with @dr.RichardSmith at @wakatobi_resort #DrRichardSmith #WakatobiDiveResort #DarrenJewPhotography #dive #underwater #underwaterphotography #scuba #underwatertour #JasmineCarey #pxlexplorer #TheWorldBeneath #conservation #biospherereserve #marineprotection #coralreef #gorgonianfan #walldive #magnifica #dropoff

09.01.2022 DAY 6 in Palau on Solitude One for #SolitudeOneFrenzy #RedSnapping I don’t really know where to start when describing this day. Suffice to say there’d been a great deal of anticipation for one possible outcome from this trip. If the moon aligned with the currents and with the weather and with our timing and with a whole lot of known unknowns and an untold bunch of unknown unknowns, we MIGHT just get to see one hell of a spectacle. ...Continue reading

08.01.2022 A couple of months ago, we went snorkel/exercising in one of the Gold Coasts creeks and had a beautiful time in clear water surrounded by baitfish and shadowed by 3 eagle rays. To add a little challenge in these times of foolproof camera tech, we dug out a Nikonos V (thanks Gene Kam), added my 15mm UW-Nikkor, and loaded it with a roll of 400iso colour neg film. The light meter isnt working on the Nikonos so estimating exposure was the order of the day (which goes hand-in-hand with estimating focus distance on this camera, as theres no focus assistance) it was a wonderful exercise in restraint with just 24 exposures on the roll. 03.01.2022 DAY 2 in Palau on #MVSolitudeOne for #SolitudeOneFrenzy Today we’re out of the reef edge to the west of Koror and things have ramped up a bit. It feels like we’re flying in the clear water off these precipitous walls , their sheer faces draped in whips and fans, bursting with life and colour. The walls disappear below into the cobalt deep and off in the blue reef sharks patrol and flash mobs of jacks, barracuda and snapper seem to wrestle the reef for attention. The mouth of... Siaes Tunnel leads into a enormous amphitheatresea fans hanging from the ceiling and lining two giant windows that draw the light in and provide vistas out into an ocean of life. I’m getting a taste of what #Palau diving is about, dropping in on edges, corners and channels where huge volumes of water are moving under the pull of powerful and unseeable forces. The dive team aboard Solitude One are weighing up many factors in their decisions on which sites we dive when, with great results. Three sites today: #OolongChannel, #SiaesTunnel and #SiaesCorner from Solitude Liveaboards & Resorts vessel Solitude One. Make sure you pop over to see Jasmine Carey’s take on day two’s adventures.

02.01.2022 DAY 4 in Palau on @MVSolitudeOne for #SolitudeOneFrenzy Fourth day on #SolitudeOne and wow man, soooooo so many fish! Big, fish, little fish, red fish, blue fish! Fish with bones, fish with cartilage. Fish with teeth, Fish with serious rock-breaking beaks. I love all the fishes (except maybe some damsels that are too feisty and territorial and like to take bits of skin off you when you’re sitting quietly trying to photograph some stationary marine critter) but today my choic...e of favourite fish in the sea was solidified when a gang of bad ’n’ mean bump head parrotfish swam out of the blue, across Blue Corner, straight towards me. These guys are seriously angry looking fish. Like I said this was not a school, it was a definitely a gang. In some oceans they wouldn’t be allowed to gather for fear of arrest. Their beaks are made for breaking coral rock so they can feed on the tiny coral polyps. There are plenty of prettier, more delicate, more colourful fishes but I’m definitely impressed by this fish’s attitude. All three of todays dives were fishy grey reef and white-tip reef #Sharks, #Barracuda, #BluestripeSnapper, #Trevally plus countless others ... you name and I think we swam with it! Three sites today: #BlueCorner , #TurtleCove , #NewDropOff all amazing, awesome and epic. Thanks Mitch for the great guiding on days 3 + 4! Make sure you pop over to see Jasmine Carey’s take on day 4 of our adventure. @solitude.world @VisitPalau @foto.frenzy.events @pxlexplorersmagazine @FinslapActiveh2o #mvsolitudeone #VisitPalau #FotoFrenzy #SolitudeWorld #JasmineCarey #SolitudeOne

02.01.2022 Happy New Year! Well it will be, soon... just thought I’d get in early with my #best9 for 2018 as voted by you guys! I’m so very fortunate to do what I do and being able to share the experience in real life through @whalesunderwater And @foto.frenzy.events and virtually through here is truely a motivating factor for me. ... 2018 was jam-packed and I am looking forward to taking you with @pxlexplorer and me on some new adventures in 2019 as well as revisiting the regular favourites. In the lead-up to New Year’s Eve, spare some time to think about... -loving and respecting the planet, its land, its sea and it’s atmosphere and all the life it supports. We only have one planet and it definitely needs friends. -Not letting high profile single-issues take all your attention. The planet needs support on many fronts ... it’s no use JUST stopping plastic pollution if at the same time you’re not reducing your environmental footprint. -The reality that liking the pictures of self-styled eco-heroes is not enough to make a difference. You need to support #realconservation initiatives to affect real change at a structural level. Grass roots, regional, national and international organisations that put in the hard yards fighting for awareness, good practical results and sensible policy outcomes are vital and need funds to function. So contribute. Here are some options: @rainforestrescueau @gbrlegacy @wwf @seashepherd -Loving one another Q. Which of my photographs is my favourite? A. The one I’m going to take tomorrow. Imogen Cunningham Can’t wait to see what’s around the corner.
