18.01.2022 Have you explored the historical cottages at the front of the Penola National Trust Herb Garden on Petticoat Lane? In 1848 Christopher Sharam, bookmaker of Lime...stone Ridge Station, married Ellen Patching, shepherd’s daughter of nearby Glenroy Station. Early in 1850 the family moved into a two roomed slab cottage built by Christopher in the private township of Penola. He built a second cottage in the mid 1860s to accommodate his growing family. Ellen bore 15 children and raised her family under difficult conditions, often left alone. As usual infant mortality took its toll. A son Thomas, 3, died of Consumption in 1867 and two daughters, Eliza, 5, and Ellen, 4, died of Scarlet Fever within a month during the 84-5 epidemic. Also in 1885 another son Henry, 17, died after a fall from a penny farthing bicycle. Sharam’s skill as a bookmaker was well known and horsemen rode from Guichen Bay (Robe), Tintinara, Gambiertown (Mt Gambier) and Portland to have their boots made. After Christopher’s death in 1890, aged 77, Ellen lived in the cottage with her daughter, Alice. Granny Sharam as she was known died in 1910, also aged 77. The cottages remained in the Sharam family until 1941 when the property was purchased by the Fennell family. Bob Fennell died in 1979 and in 1981 the Cottages were purchased by the Penola Branch of the National Trust of South Australia. There’s a lot more to discover at Petticoat Lane.
