As your DR is signing you a prescription for your combined oral contraceptive pill have they informed you that it has been identified as a group 1 carcinogen by the IARC? So what & who are the the IARC I hear you asking your smart phones.. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). The IARC coordinates and conducts both epidemiological and laboratory research into the causes of human cancer. . So here’s the PSA: There is more than ample evidence to indicate the combined oral contraceptive pill can cause cancer. . Unfortunately for the approximately 2.4 billion women world wide who are using the COCP there is evidence that the COCP may cause: Genotoxicity & chromosomal abnormalities Breast cancer Cervical cancer Liver and gallbladder cancer Colorectal cancer Thyroid cancer . My hope is that more & more women understand the risks of the COCP & are educated about the research & facts regarding this form of contraception. Then & only then can women truely give informed consent & make informed choices regarding their reproductive health.
