23.01.2022 An important piece by Associate Professor Shiralee Poed for QUT’s Centre for Inclusive Education, discussing enrolment ‘gatekeeping’, a practice that is unlawful in Australia, under the Disability Standards for Education 2005. https://research.qut.edu.au//gatekeeping-the-enrolment-of/
22.01.2022 The NDIS loves an acronym. This handy explainer from The Growing Space might help to decipher the alphabet soup.
17.01.2022 The government proposal to have the NDIS Act amended to permit the Agency to conduct "independent assessments" of prospective participants is so problematic (and so NOT "independent") that it would be funny if it weren't so serious. The Tune Review explicitly stated that "NDIA should not implement a closed or deliberatively limited panel of providers to undertake functional capacity assessments.". The response of the Government is to propose the exact opposite of this. Essent...ially they are looking to develop a mechanism where the assessment of a bean-counter or actuary who has only just met and spent a few hours (or as little as 20 minutes!) with a prospective participant, holds more weight than the collective knowledge and reports of all the medical and allied health professionals that may well have been supporting that person for their entire life. It's not right and must be stopped. See more
16.01.2022 Did you hear the news? The new SDA Rule was passed this week. And it specifically allows SDA residents to live with whoever they like, regardless of whether ...that person is SDA approved or an NDIS participant. So people can now live with their friends, partners or children who might not have a disability. Some of you might be thinking- surely that has to have been possible all along? I mean, the NDIS wouldn’t force SDA residents to basically live in segregated housing, would they? That’s would be a reasonable assumption. But until this week when the long overdue amendment was passed, it was not the case. The change came about thanks to the lobbying effort of many people with disability, family members and SDA providers. We will have more detailed analysis of the new SDA rule soon. A $20 million outreach program to better engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally or linguistically diverse communities and people with psychosocial disability and much, much more Full response is available here; https://www.dss.gov.au//australian-government-response-tun?

08.01.2022 Save the date for Meeting Place 2020! Arts Access Australia have announced that Meeting Place 2020 will be held online for the first time on 15-16 September. The forum will encompass a mix of panel discussions, keynote speakers, workshops and artistic showcases centred around the theme of ‘Creating Space’.... AAA CEO Matthew Hall said, This year’s theme provides an opportunity to explore the idea of creating space for disability arts, leadership and access within the broader arts community, and to discuss and present ideas for how to do this. The theme allows us to ask, who are we creating these spaces for and why? And as a disabled artist, how do I create space for myself to advocate for myself - and others? In previous years the forum has been held in different locations across Australia and overseas, shining a spotlight on d/Deaf and disabled artists and accessibility best-practice in the local area. Tickets to Meeting Place 2020 will go on sale at the end of July. Meeting Place 2020 was planned to take place in Brisbane as part of the Undercover Artist Festival in September. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Undercover Artist Festival has rescheduled to a virtual showcase in December 2020. https://www.meetingplaceforum.org/
