23.01.2022 We are proud to be a PANDA Week 2020 Partner. In this most unusual and difficult year, Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Action Week is more important than ever. With many expecting and new parents struggling due to COVID-19, it’s critical that we work together to support families facing mental health challenges at this time. PANDA week this year runs from Sunday 8th - 14th of November.... About @pandanational For the last fifteen years PANDA has been using a week in November to raise awareness about perinatal mental illness and to reduce stigma so those affected can seek help. The theme for PANDA Week 2020 is ‘Tell someone who cares’. This year, more than ever it’s vital that expecting and new parents who are struggling know they’re not alone and can reach out for help. And just as importantly, they can know that when they do reach out, they will be supported by those they confide in, whether family members, health professionals, PANDA or other perinatal mental health specialists. In support of PANDA Week we will be sharing artwork and lived experience stories by PANDA's volunteer Community Champions to help reduce stigma, show how important it is that those affected know they are not alone and can reach out for help, and that perinatal illness is complex and every person’s experience is different. www.panda.org.au

08.01.2022 If you havent already head over to https://www.daxcentre.org/daxathome/collection-home/ to view our current Collection @Home, a series of mini online exhibitions featuring selected works from the Cunningham Dax Collection. Artwork shown: Bruce Doyle, Still life with aquarium 1988, acrylic on paper, 42 x 29.5 cm Bruce Doyle... 1939 1992 Bruce Doyle was a prolific artist who did not receive recognition during his lifetime. He died of natural causes in his fifties, having lived with schizophrenia since his twenties. Many of his works were painted at home. Doyle held an exhibition at Caulfield Arts Complex in 1990 and the following are excerpts from a press release accompanying that exhibition: Doyles paintings are characterised by an exuberance in content and style. His love of the world around him and his enthusiasm for painting radiates from each picture. Expressionist may be one way to describe these works. Doyle himself describes them as abstract realist. I am a free soul when it comes to my art said Doyle, who began painting 15 years ago. Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, Doyle also completed a six month drawing course with Alan Sumner at the National Gallery Art School. This background in drafting and professional training is subtly revealed in the formal qualities of Doyles work in his compositional skill and his exciting sense of colour.

06.01.2022 As a #PANDAWeek2020 Partner this week we will be sharing artwork and lived experience stories by PANDA's volunteer Community Champions to help reduce stigma, show how important it is that those affected know they are not alone and can reach out for help, and that perinatal illness is complex and every person’s experience is different. Today we are sharing Elisabeth Hall's work (@the_arty_anxious_one) Artwork title: ‘Everything is Fine’... "I have been using art as therapy for severe post-natal depression, anxiety and panic attacks after the births of both my daughters, in 2013 and early 2020. COVID-19 has brought emotions and stressors to a peak with me, and balancing family, work and my mental health has been a very difficult challenge. I have needed two hospital stays this year for my mental health, and I feel like I have a duty to be open about that because when I first experienced PND/A, I knew nobody who had gone through the same thing. Along the way, I have felt privileged to have been able to be somebody who people have felt safe enough to confide in about their own struggles with post-natal mental health. Although I have support from family, a fantastic psychiatrist and an amazing workplace, it’s still incredibly difficult at times. I go to work and put on my ‘professional face’ that says ‘everything is fine’, but on the inside I sometimes feel completely alone, lost and like I’m screaming for help and an escape. The piece chosen is recent, and represents painting a picture for the world where ‘everything is fine’ and I’m happy and bubbly and capable, when on the inside it all feels like a lie, like wearing an absurd mask. I’ve played around with mixed media to represent this superficial happiness to be sparkly and bright, in a dark inner world where I’m begging for help with a sign written in blood (ribbon). I would like to encourage any parents who are experiencing symptoms of PND/A to seek help as soon as possible, and to find a health professional that suits you. Art therapy isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for something to help you understand what you’re feeling, then it can be really helpful and cathartic." - Elisabeth Hall For more information about perinatal anxiety and depression head to www.panda.org.au @pandanational
