25.01.2022 As we know, 2020 has been a trying year and has provided many challenges for us all. Issues such as social isolation have been particularly challenging within our Aboriginal Community and for those of us who have been disconnected from our Mob. This year, Hume have had the privilege of working with Port Stephens Council and our customers on a program called Koori Kinnect. This community-led initiative is an opportunity for our Aboriginal Elders and leaders in our communit...y to socially connect with one another, to discuss and practice culture, and have some fun exploring our local area. This week, we will be hosting a community luncheon for participants to acknowledge NAIDOC safely, celebrate the beautiful land we live on, and enjoy a safe place to have a yarn, all while promoting kinship and community values that are so vital to our Aboriginal staff and customers. This event will be the first of many, with the Koori Kinnect project leading into 2021 and beyond. Always Was, Always Will Be.

25.01.2022 Calling aspiring young Hunter customers who want to get into a trade! Recently, Hume visited Hunter Trade College - RTO 91287 and was shown around the impressive facilities open to Year 11 and 12 students by Abbie Barnfield, Industry and Community Liaison Coordinator. HTC runs a work readiness program for students wanting to get into automotive, construction, electrical, or metals/engineering trades that leads onto a work placement. With excellent industry links and a structured accredited program, this is such a fantastic start for young people wanting to get into a skilled trade. These young men and women could be the part of the future workforce if the government decides to invest in Social and Affordable Housing in the Hunter.

19.01.2022 Hume is celebrating our first year in the Hunter region and we are thrilled to be making such a positive impact on our customers lives. In light of the recent COVID-19 lockdown, Humes Senior Projects Officer Marnie Fitzpatrick (centre) established the Phone a Buddy program, which aims to connect isolated senior customers over the phone based on age, location, and interests. When Maitland customers Cheryl (left) and Janett (right) signed up for Phone a Buddy, neither imagin...ed that they would actually make a new friend in the process. The buddies recently had the opportunity to meet-up in person to share a cuppa and enjoyed a few laughs. Marnie says: At any age, maintaining social connection is important for health and wellbeing, yet studies show that for older adults, social isolation is particularly detrimental. We are pleased the Phone a Buddy program has been so warmly embraced. 09.01.2022 Social housing could not only help those who need a home, it could hold part of the answer to lifting the Australian economy out of the #COVID #recession to come.
