24.01.2022 Paddling into the weekend and todays feature for National Volunteer Week is: Name: Nicola Frowen Club: Pacific Dragons DBOCC... DBNSW Role(s): Board Director (current Chair) How long have you been paddling for? 14 years What made you get into paddling? A friend of mine wanted to try it so I tagged along to the clubs novice day and loved it and have been here ever since. What keeps you volunteering for DBNSW? So far Ive had a good time on the Board - we have a great and diverse team which has brought in many views to consider I feel like we have been able to make some changes that have benefited the paddlers and the sport which I am proud of there is still much to do to get us to where we want to be, and with what has happened to the 2nd half of the 19/20 season, we will be on the way and look forward to the next season. So, Ill keep coming back for now! What is your greatest achievement in the sport to date? As a paddler, I have been lucky to have been part of a lot of exciting and successful moments at my club but 3 very special DB highlights are: my club winning all 9/9 Premier Division Gold Medals at Nationals (I was in 6 of the 9 crews just not the mens crews!); winning a 500m Premier Mixed Crew Gold Medal at the World Club Crew Championships; being part of winning the Premier Mixed and Premier Womens crews at Chinese New Year 10 years in a row. Who is your inspiration and why? I dont have just one person to reference I get inspired by the people around me all the time. This sport lends itself to a big group of passionate and diverse people from all walks of life, who come together to make a team and I find this, and them, a constant source of inspiration (and wonder).

24.01.2022 What a time to be a Dragon Boater . Google has recognised the 2020 Dragon Boat Festival by having it as their banner. The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional holiday originating in China, occurring near the summer solstice. The festival now occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar, which is the source of the festivals alternative name, the Double Fifth Festival.

23.01.2022 FAREWELL - As highlighted in the recent August update we are saying goodbye to long term Sweep Coordinator Anni Yaringa (Camden Haven). Anni took great care of all things sweeping in the Northern Region (NR2) including training and assessing sweeps, supervising steerers at regattas, sweeping in multiple campaigns for the northern region state squads, serving as one of the NSW representatives on the AusDBF sweep group and an important member of the NSW Sweep Coordinator Group. Anni was a massive influence on our sport in NSW and her contributions will be greatly missed. DBNSW and on behalf of the clubs we thank you Anni for all you have done in your time with the sport and wish you the very best in your dragon boat retirement.

21.01.2022 Its National Mens health week. Why is Australian male health so in need of attention? Why work on mens health? More males die at every stages through the life course, more males have accidents, more males take their own lives and more males suffer from lifestyle-related health conditions than females at the same age.... Meanwhile, men are less frequent visitors to general practitioners, and the perception is that they dont care about health or that health services are not well-prepared to interact with men effectively. Mens Health Week provides a platform for challenging and debating key issues in mens health and to raise the profile of men, their health outcomes and health needs around the country.

19.01.2022 As many in our community would now be aware the NSW Government recently announced that both junior and senior sporting training, competitions and contact activities may resume from 1 July. 07.01.2022 To be a successful, well-run club, you need a clear idea of where you stand, and where you could be . Last year a number of club committees got a better idea of where they were at by undertaking a club health check, with some implementing changes to support and grow their club. If your club hasnt yet undertaken its annual health check, please consider it. It doesnt take long and can really help create a strong and vibrant club in the future. Once your club completes it, send the results to DBNSW so we can look at building resources to support you on this continual improvement journey

07.01.2022 It might be the last day of National Volunteer Week, but its never the last day for our volunteers. Our members dedicate countless hours to improve their club, members and state. From everyone at DBNSW, we thank all of our volunteers for all that they do. Today is our final bio: John Holgate Club: Nature Coast ... DBNSW Role(s) Southern Region Coordinator, Manager Southern Region Team, 6 years on Nature Coast committee (5 years as President) How long have you been paddling for? Just over 7 years What made you get into paddling? My wife Therese started paddling with Nature Coast and encouraged me to join. We had previously played several sports together and it was great to find another sport that we could enjoy together. What keeps you volunteering for DBNSW? I enjoy the the role and dragon boating generally because of wonderful people that I have met in the Region. It is a pleasure to work with them. What is your greatest achievement in the sport to date? Being part of the Southern Region team that won gold at the Sunshine Coast in 2014. Who is your inspiration and why? I am inspired generally by so many people in Dragon Boating who freely devote so much of their time and energy to the sport they love. As a coach Chris Cheung is both inspiring and a great teacher. I am inspired also by our regional paddlers who travel hundreds of kilometres to compete or just to attend regional training. If you had one wish, to change the world for the better what would it be and why? The misuse of power at any level because of the resulting injustices and inequality.

06.01.2022 Race 5 is coming up on Sunday 17 January. Registrations close tonight! So get into RevSport to enter your crews. Many volunteers are needed for this regatta! All racing crews should be submitting at least one vollie. Volunteer registration is here https://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/Ddn2dTle1JO90
