25.01.2022 COVID-19 has resulted in kids missing out on things sport, music, awesome writing programs ... But The Literature Centre has held onto its vision and has stepped into the digital world to bring an end to at least one of those losses. And going online means that all sorts of students and schools who wouldnt ordinarily be able to be part of the program, due to geography, can now do so easily. With Meg McKinlay and Isobelle Carmody and moi delivering Term 2s material, what have you got to lose? See you online!
25.01.2022 The Tim Winton Award for Young Writers opens on Monday 20 July and closes Friday 14 August. With multiple categories for Western Australian students of all ages, its a wonderful way to begin taking your writing more seriously. https://www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/timwintonaward
25.01.2022 Dara McAnulty has won the 2020 Wainwright Prize, making him the youngest ever winner of a major literary prize. Diary of a Young Naturalist chronicles the then 15-year-olds intense connection to the natural world alongside his perspective as an autistic teenager juggling exams, friendships and a life of campaigning. I cant wait to read this!
24.01.2022 Super proud to see old school and uni friend Tony Hughes-daeth take up the position of Chair of Australian Literature at UWA! Literature brings out dimensions to life that are sometimes missed in the transactions of everyday discussions. But it also opens a door to our deepest beliefs, fears and hopes. It is really important in a country like Australia, with its complex colonial history, that literature exists as a space for thinking through who we are. Tony Hughes-daeth

22.01.2022 Many people have said to me, What a pity you had such a big family to raise. Think of the novels and the short stories and the poems you never had time to write because of that. And I looked at my children and I said, These are my poems, these are my stories. OLGA MASTERS The Olga Masters Short Story Award seeks stories that explore Australian rural family life. What a lovely theme. Entries close Friday 10 July 2020.
22.01.2022 "As a First Nations writer and the child of refugees, I feel a strong compulsion to say to emerging writers: you matter. Your story matters. Im listening. Together we can make change happen." Melissa Lucashenko, author and co-judge of the SBS Emerging Writers Competition.
22.01.2022 Proud to have been able to make a donation from my royalties to this awesome organisation working so hard to help Australias rarest mammal. Huge thanks to readers, teachers and librarians who have bought copies of The Spectacular Spencer Gray and care so much about our fragile environment. Fremantle Press @GilbertsPotorooActionGroup https://www.potoroo.org

22.01.2022 I had a lot of fun doing this and talked like a nutter for most of my session. Some wonderful WA writers and illustrators in this series. Thanks Paper Bird Childrens Books and Arts!
18.01.2022 A sniffily condescending readers report from Macmillan, her then publisher in London, prompted her to withdraw the book. Soon after, she pretty well gave up writing.

18.01.2022 This is the only kind of panic shopping we want to see in Australia from now on ... Books! Go crazy, everyone!
17.01.2022 I am not a literate person. I have never gone to any school, but I feel very proud that an illiterate person like me has become a source for education for children who want to learn. Murad, camel librarian.
15.01.2022 In these self-isolating times, there is literally nothing more comforting than a book. And bookshops are coming to the party, many of them delivering for free in an attempt to keep their businesses afloat and food on writers tables. So, for those in a position to do so, please support authors and illustrators as more and more of their events book launches, festivals and school visits get cancelled. https://www.booksandpublishing.com.au//australian-booksho/

10.01.2022 Frog and Toad, like their forebears in The Wind in the Willows, may bumble about the forest in tweed sports coats, but the accumulated weight of the tales is unexpectedly moving. Though each short story begins with the premise of an adventure, the plot twist is that, invariably, nothing really happens. Phillip Makiac

09.01.2022 And now for something completely lighthearted ... Check out these opening lines of literary classics, rewritten with coronavirus in mind. The new version of Moby Dick made me laugh out loud. Thanks to the English Teachers Association of WA for this.

01.01.2022 The core idea of a sweet and nerdy crew of schoolchildren taking field trips into scientific concepts, bodily parts, into space and back to the age of dinosaurs and always led by their teacher, the intrepid Ms. Frizzle eventually spun out into dozens of tie-ins and more than 93 million copies in print, plus a beloved television show that aired for 18 years in more than 100 countries.
