11.01.2022 Would you like to meet our chickens? We have a lovely flock now, after quite a bit of coming and going. And we are regularly getting a few eggs a day. They all have names. But we are still not 100% sure Valerie (the first one) is not Vlad. We are so hoping she is a hen because she is very striking and quite a personality. I have put their names under each picture.

11.01.2022 So it’s the chickens’ bedtime and Dave is giving Orpy one last cuddle. They fuss and fight with each other, go to bed then get up again, and then eventually all settle down together in their roosting house, and sleep snuggled up with each other until morning. Then all the jostling and chookyard antics start over again for another day. Orpy is one of the roosters who will have to find a new home soon.

08.01.2022 Lots has happened since my last post here. We just had the pergola put up ....increasing our 100m2 living area to 150m2. We are delighted and excited and full of ideas for what to do in this space. And we will finally have a housewarming party soon! I finished painting the fence yellow and we have moved the succulent collection up where it will soon be planted. The chickens are laying and we got out first blue egg yesterday!... We have a new puppy, 11 weeks old....Mango, a red female Doberman, who is the crusiest, most laid back puppy we have ever met. The fruit trees are growing and the Kombi is nearly finished (a few more touch ups before it is on the market, but it got to the VW show last Sunday, so officially it is finished!). Only an 18year journey for Dave, from finding it as a shell in a paddock being used as a chook coop.

07.01.2022 This is one lucky hen. She has been caretaking some baby chicks for us, and each night Dave puts her in with them to keep them warm. She is only half grown herself but somehow has a very strong maternal streak. On Saturday night, Dave went up at dusk to put her in with the babies for the night, and he uses a fishing net to gently catch her- we have found this the easiest and least stressful way. Before he had even put the net over her, before she had even tried to run, she ke...eled over and dropped dead. Poor Dave was mortified and gently picked her up and bought her back to the house to show me. He was quite distraught! She was completely limp, floppy, had no sign of breath or heartbeat. We presumed dead. Then he felt inspired to give the chicken mouth to mouth ressucitation. Yes, he did. For about a full minute. And, she came back. Not kidding, her eyes started twitching and eventually opened. She was still completely floppy for a few more minutes. He took her back to be with the baby chicks and she couldnt stand and her head flopped and she rolled onto her side. She couldn’t hold her head up. The baby chicks didn’t care, they still sat under her. Later Dave went to check on her and she seemed a bit better. The next morning she was 90% better and when put in the pen with the other hens, ran up to her sister and had a gentle tussle. She was still a bit wobbly on her feet but today she is back to normal. What was that! I am not sure I will ever forget the image of Dave giving a chicken mouth to mouth. Puffing air into her lungs. Lucky chook! See more

07.01.2022 Our babies are growing up. A little munted but they will get there. They are starting to sing (in chicken language) their celebration of egg laying.
