22.01.2022 #MentalHealthMatters There's no health without mental health, and this #WorldMentalHealthDay we are looking at the benefits of exercise. Exercise reduces anxiet...y, depression, negative mood and social isolation and improves selfesteem, cognitive functions and quality of life. Poor mental health is identified as one of the biggest causes of disability, poor quality of life and reduced productivity. Take care of you #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth Mental Health Foundation Australia

19.01.2022 There are some good links here. Find the one that is appropriate to you or your child.

17.01.2022 Did you know that there are developmental benefits of reading to a sleeping baby? This month, families and staff on our Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Butt...erfly, have been taking part in the ‘Little Readers Read-a-thon’, an initiative encouraging parents of NICU babies to read to their little ones as much as possible. Studies have shown that exposure to more language can improve language development in babies. Babies in a NICU hear 14,000 less words over a 16 hour period compared to babies at home, which can affect language development later in life. Little Carter and his parents are just one family who have taken part in the Read-a-thon and are really enjoying the bonding time with their bub. Carter was born at 25 weeks gestation and has stayed at the RCH for the first 13 weeks of his life. Carter’s mum Ineke and dad Jeremy have been reading to Carter as much as they can during their stay in the hospital. I have a collection of books from my grandma that she used to read to me as a baby, so we’ve been reading them to Carter, which has been really lovely, Ineke said. The Best Little Monkeys in the World has been his favourite, we love reading that one to him together as a family.

16.01.2022 Great idea when you don’t need the toys anymore so other families can access them... and better for the environment!

15.01.2022 Celebrating that we have our updated signage at last.

03.01.2022 Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection which commonly results in symptoms of fever and a rash in children or adults. Our community is currently experienci...ng increased cases of chickenpox. To help stop the spread, please remember: - Chickenpox is easily spread by direct contact with a person who has chickenpox, or by fluid droplets in the air when they cough or sneeze. - A person with chickenpox is infectious to others from one to two days before the rash first appears and until the last blisters have dried up. - Children with chickenpox should not go to child care, kindergarten or school until the last blister has dried. - Immunisation is the best protection against chickenpox and is given to children aged 18 months as part of their normal vaccination schedule. If you are unsure about your child’s vaccination history, check their immunisation records or contact your GP. Most children with chickenpox can be cared for at home. However, if you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, please visit your local GP. To learn more about chickenpox in children, visit: https://www.rch.org.au/ki/fact_sheets/Chickenpox_Varicella/

02.01.2022 We have seen a very busy few weeks in our Emergency Department (ED) and things are certainly not getting quieter. We know that many children are suffering from... respiratory illness at the moment which has increased our numbers and wait times in the ED. The current wait time for non-urgent illness at the RCH ED is a minimum of four hours, and looks likely to be longer in the coming hours. If your child is unwell with a respiratory illness, we highly recommend getting in touch with your local GP in the first instance. We know our partner hospitals are also feeling the strain and all ED’s will treat the sickest children first. While we understand that you’ll be concerned about your child, there may be other children in need of more urgent care, causing longer wait times for less urgent cases. The RCH ED is still very busy - and we expect it to get even busier as the day and evening goes on. Please always try your GP or local hospital ED in the first instance. If your child needs to attend the ED at the RCH or another hospital, we ask that you please be respectful of the staff. While there may be other children in need of more urgent care, we are all doing the best we can to see your child quickly. To keep up to date with our live ED tracker, please visit: https://bit.ly/3tn2Ge5
