24.01.2022 In an initiative to build strong relationships with junior aviators, #AusAirForce air traffic control personnel from No. 452 Squadron introduced the presentation of certificates as part of No. 44 Wing’s commitment to safety. The first of these were presented to civilian student pilots who had conducted their first solo flights at Townsville airport, an important step in their flying careers. 23.01.2022 WATCH || Around 30 #AusArmy soldiers from 1st Combat Engineer Regiment, 1st Close Health Battalion and North-West Mobile Force participated in Exercise Sapper Engagement. The activity gave soldiers the opportunity to learn about the remote Indigenous communities of Milingimbi and Ramingining in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. During the activity, the soldiers spoke with Elders, played sport with community members and gained insights into the culture of this remote area. 23.01.2022 WATCH || #AusNavy clearance divers helped reopen access to Elizabeth Reef, one of the world’s most significant and biologically diverse coral reefs. A team from Australian Clearance Diving Team One supported by the ship’s company of HMAS Adelaide and air support from an embarked MRH-90 helicopter, worked to locate and remove an unexploded ordnance from the reef at the request of Parks Australia. Commanding Officer Adelaide Captain Jonathan Ley said the team had been tasked w...ith investigating the unexploded ordnance after Elizabeth Reef was closed to recreational users and fishing vessels because of safety concerns. I was pleased that, in conjunction with our supporting assets, we were able to safely clear this unexploded ordnance, Captain Ley said. Clearance divers used landing craft and the MRH-90 to move the device and dispose of it, in deep water, while preserving the natural environment. 22.01.2022 WATCH || #AusArmy Cadet Oscar Fowler has developed a prototype for a sensor that detects harmful gases, which could one day have military and civilian uses. The Canary Sensor is named after the old practice of having a canary in a mine shaft to warn the miners of the presence of toxic gas, particularly carbon monoxide. Staff Cadet Fowler will develop the prototype so it can alert personnel on the ground to toxic threats via wearable technology, giving operational planners the ability to test the air before sending in troops, or alerting frontline soldiers when they need to move away from contaminated air. 22.01.2022 WATCH || As #YourADF is completing trials for safe airdropping of fodder bundles, allowing it to resupply livestock during floods and other natural disasters. The new delivery method is a safer practice than a similar role that Defence last performed in the early 1990s, which carried the risk of dust and foreign object debris accumulating and coating aircraft systems and causing damage during the airdrop. The new method involves the use of easily-acquired materials to cons...truct a box around the load which contains the fodder during the flight and breaks apart on impact with the drop zone, simultaneously dispersing the fodder for livestock without further human involvement. 21.01.2022 A high-speed satellite communications (SATCOM) system has been installed on a second Royal Australian Air Force C-130J Hercules. The in-flight internet connection system allows live-streaming of high-definition video, and connectivity to headquarters and other nodes around the world. The aircraft’s Rear Gunner, Mr Edward Sheriff (then RAF Flight Sergeant), gifted a photo to the Australian High Commission in London. Taken in 1944, the photograph shows the combined Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Air Force crew standing with their No. 466 Squadron Wellington Bomber in Driffield, Yorkshire. ... Mr Sheriff shared the photo with the hope of finding the late crew’s families in Australia. Royal Australian Air Force Trial Manager Andy Searle helped the JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)'s recovery of the #haybusa2 space capsule, delivering part of the universe back to Earth for study. Mr Searle, of the #AusAirForce Test Ranges Squadron, was the lead planner for the mission to recover the JAXA's Hayabusa2 satellite that landed in the Woomera Protected Area with the asteroid sample. ... 17.01.2022 #AusArmy Reservist Private Frank Marrar had a busy first year in the Army Reserve. After completing recruit and patrolman courses in Darwin, he deployed three times around Australia supporting #YourADF operations. The 29-year old, from the remote Northern Territory community of Nauiyu, enlisted in Norforce in September 2019. Private Marrar went from cutting down burnt trees and clearing footpaths at Kangaroo Island during #OpBushfireAssist, to manning a police check point to control access to remote communities in the Northern Territory for #OpCOVID19Assist. 15.01.2022 Graduates of course 21 of the #AusNavy Underwater Medicine Clinician course celebrated the completion of seven months of training with a small gathering outside the Submarine Underwater Medical Unit at HMAS Penguin. Underwater medicine is a specialist area of military medicine that requires expertise that is not generally available from civilian organisations. The training provides an advanced level of skills and knowledge, which can only be gained through experience within the navy submarine and diving-medicine environment, in combination with appropriate post-graduate training. Aircraftwoman Mervis is a dedicated blood donor having been encouraged by her dad to join him giving a drop to help save others. After a recent donation, Aircraftwoman Mervis said she was advised by text that her blood was being used for an anonymous recipient. A total of 31 submarines visited the Port of Albany after the United States Navy split its submarine force between that port and Fremantle. American submarines launched 521 patrols from Australia sinking more than 1.7 million tonnes of shipping. "I am a Charters Towers-born descendant of the Gudjala tribal group who are recognised as the traditional custodians in that area," Uncle Harry said. "I first started work with the Postmaster-General’s Department, but in 1966 I enlisted in the Air Force in Townsville. It was the beginning of... a wonderful career where I reached the rank of Warrant Officer before discharging in 1989." During his career, Uncle Harry was assigned to McClelland Air Force Base in the United States helping with the delivery of Australia's iconic F-111C aircraft. Following in his... foster fathers footsteps, Sergeant Maher dedicated his career to the Army which, he said, became like family to him. His last posting was to the Army Indigenous Development Program with the Indigenous Development Wing of Regional Force Surveillance Group (RFSG) in Darwin. The RFSG monitors the expansive remote landmass and waterways of Australias north and north-west, drawing heavily on the local knowledge of the significant numbers of Indigenous Army Reserve soldiers who make up the bulk of the force. Loaded by No. 36 Squadron crew at Vancouver International Airport, the aircraft was delivered to RAAF Base Richmond. A special cargo instruction on how to safely load, restrain, and unload the helicopter was provided by Air Mobility Training and Development Unit. To prepare for the journey to Australia, its rotor blades were stored in wooden c...rates and its entire fuselage was covered in a protective plastic. Wheels were attached to the Bell 412’s landing skids and the helicopter was winched into the C-17A along special wooden ramps that were laid down on the transport aircraft’s cargo ramp. HMA Ships Brisbane and Anzac fought together in a real-time maritime warfare scenario using operation room simulators across . Royal Australian Navy Personnel from Brisbane used the air warfare destroyer simulator at HMAS Watson to bring the Hobart-class warships advanced layered attack and defensive combat capabilities to the exercise. This training is vital to ensure combined arms operations are practiced so the Australian Army is ready to respond to combat operations, disaster relief and medical evacuation.

That's what struck with three soldiers who were used to working in the Sunshine State. Six Brigades 6th Engineer Support Regiment surveyors Lance Corporal Michael Raymont, Lance Corporal Stewart Cox and Sapper Luke Carey recently completed topographic surveys at Davis Station in Antarctica, 4811km south of Hobart. "Operation ...Southern Discovery is #YourADF's support to Australia's Antarctic activities, Lance Corporal Raymont said. It's a triservice operation and #AusArmy supports by undertaking topographic surveys for the Davis Aerodrome and Station Infrastructure Projects. In May 2018, the Australian Government announced its intention to construct a paved runway near the research station, subject to environmental and government approvals. With the project now in a planning phase and the environmental assessment being prepared, the surveyors spent the deployment focused on refining the terrain model developed over previous years.
