23.01.2022 Ana Pollak’s exquisite show ‘Palimpsest’ opens this Sunday at 11am at Defiance Gallery at Mary Place PALIMPSEST Palimpsest: noun. a manuscript on which two or more successive texts have been written, each one being erased to make room for the next. Something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. ... The word Palimpsest sums up the layered nature of the process paintings and subject for this show. The Hawkesbury Sandstone country where I live has a diverse abundance of textures within its botanical communities. Walking through the bush is an immersive experience of being surrounded by multiple veils of contrasting foliage and tree lines. Across light filled voids and through canopies, rhythms of branch lines echo. It’s a delight for my eyes to play with these connections or get massaged by leaf stipple of a community of Kunzea or Isopogen plants. Knowing that these botanical descendants are here after millions of years of coexistence and competition is both humbling and mind expanding. Ana Pollak 2020 Ana will donate one quarter of her earnings from the sale of her works in the exhibition to the Australian Wildlife Consrvancy Meet the artist - Ana will be in the gallery every Saturday from midday to 3pm during her exhibition

20.01.2022 Don’t miss the last day of Dave Teer’s exhibition tomorrow. We are open 11-5 Dave’s poem adds another dimension when looking at the works..... Finite monuments for infinite amnesia... I went back to the bush to find the trees, Powder remained, Charted appendages contorted, Histories residue, piled high. A hush, a hush , a hush.......so low........, it, It made, the noise seem like silence, For gone is the roar of the story just past. This avoidable silence that has now become, apparently unavoidably....... Well its descended from high, It now it is here to stay, Here to stay! This silence which started so low, so, low, so, so low, So low to the ground, It’s here to stay? But.....But, It roared! It reached so high! What was once life, well now its just.... Well it’s .....well it’s.....well it just, It just clings to the ankles. Feeble now, it will not yield! It does not, will not yield, Yield to neglect, Yield to the amnesia of the times. Hurt, Irritable, Resigned to the struggle, Resigned to the amnesia, Resigned to all the miscellaneous rubbish talk. Resigned to the insidious nature of a dominant species. Now.........now, As if gesturing gently towards the universe. Clinging like kindness Avoiding obliteration, Avoiding simply becoming a finite monument. Blossoming! Even though it is sick to the bone, It’s Blossoming, Crying out. The bush admiringly try’s again. Install shots by Stephen Oxenbury

14.01.2022 If you haven’t yet seen Dave Teer’s brilliant exhibition we are open tomorrow from 11-5. John McDonald reviewed the exhibition recently in the SMH Spectrum; Upstairs at Defiance Dave Teer’s Finite monuments, infinite amnesia reflects on last year’s bushfire crisis and the speed with which we have forgotten that seemingly unforgettable trauma. His response is an epic series of abstract paintings in which colours flicker like flames and ash, along with a suite of freestanding s...culptures that give the show its title. Teer has never been unwilling to experiment but these works are a startling departure from his better-known metal sculptures. Rough, blackened columns rise up from classical pediments like burnt tree trunks growing out of the ruins of a classical culture. As the column rises higher a radical transformation takes place, with the vertical movement being interrupted by a biomorphic form that might be a human figure, an insect or part of a tree. Each form has been professionally gilded, like a monument of an ancient civilisation. This show could be viewed as a celebration of nature’s powers of self-renewal but also as a comment on our own obtuseness. Does something have to glisten before we pay attention? While the golden forms act as capitals for the blackened columns they also pun on another kind of capital that seems to be in perpetual war with nature.

14.01.2022 Tim we miss you already! Thank you for being such a wonderful colleague, friend and part of the Defiance team since 2016. We all wish you every success on your exciting move to Melbourne. Come and visit us soon XX #timcorne @tctimtim
