24.01.2022 The birth of the 6 valve Norwegian Star is complete! Many thanks to Miraphone for providing and preparing the parts. Fantastic company to work with! https://www.miraphone.de

22.01.2022 Superfine Handcrafted Cases - https://superfinecases.com - have been arriving and they are looking great. With the Australian dollar rising against the US it's a great time to get a new gig bag. Fitted tuba bags your your instrument are taking about two months to arrive after the order is placed. I have the more universal fit euphonium bag (photos below) in store now.

18.01.2022 Here are a couple new products that just came in: Adjustable Gap Receiver for trumpet - adjuust the gap between the end of the mouthpiece and the beginning of the leadpipe instantly and securely with this Adjustable Gap Receiver. This product will need to be installed and may require some modification of bracing. French Horn Slide Adjustment Unit - I've been asked about these for a while and finally found them. Use on a tuning slide to keep from falling in or to easily set a ...slide back to the correct position after removal. You can find these at www.diefesbrass.com

18.01.2022 Nows the fun time of year when I can get onto bigger projects. This week included a French horn bell cut, an axial flow valve installation and prepping a 1950s cornet for lacquer. Always fun to get out of the normal routine of cleanings.

15.01.2022 From our friends at Superfine Cases...

14.01.2022 Here's a recently arrived Eastman EBB562 BBb rotary tuba. This is Eastman's 4/4 rotary tuba - it is definitely on the big side of the 4/4! This tuba has a huge sound but the medium sized .748' bore gives an excellent focus and efficiency while maintaining a solid core. I tend to find large bore rotor tubas difficult to slur smoothly but the .748" bore of this tuba makes keeping a clean slur a breeze. $9349 From the Eastman website: https://www.eastmanwinds.com/tubas: The mode...l EBB562 is a 4/4 size Germanic instrument with four rotary valves and a .748 bore. This tuba features a big open sound with good projection. It is the perfect choice for the player that wants rotary valves, and doesn’t want the larger bore of the EBB623. Key of BBb 4/4 size tuba with a 17 3/4 yellow brass bell Yellow brass construction with nickel-silver valve slides Four rotary valves through a .748 bore Exquisitely finished in a clear lacquer Durable case with wheels Includes silver-plated Eastman mouthpiece

09.01.2022 Now that was a lot of work! My first bass trombone axial flow build from scratch on a Bach 50B. Thanks to Kim Olsen and Instrument Innovations for the fantastic valves, detachable brace parts, tubing and lever parts.

07.01.2022 A bit of a PSA today... I've seen this far too often and I see it on both piston and rotor valves: there is a tech in Sydney that regularly buffs and polished valves. This is a basic and absolute NO under any condition! Brass instruments are built to exact and tight tolerances, that is what makes them work. Buffing takes off metal, makes the bits smaller and they leak. Pretty simple... Ask your tech if they buff the valves. If they say, "yes," run away.... If your Monel or Stainless Steel valves look like the example below after a service, they have been buffed and ruined. A full set of replacement pistons for a trumpet will cost several hundred dollars and may need to be refitted. A rotor valve cannot be easily seen but the same holds true. The additional photos below demonstrate that just the smallest amount of metal removal had made this identical trumpet 30 times leakier then the other one. Or put it this way, in a matter of minutes this tech put 50+ years of hard use wear into this trumpet.

05.01.2022 Here's an interesting one... C. G. Conn Conn-Queror cornet. This horn was made circe 1905. Note the leadpipe enters the 2nd valve, then the airstream routes to another main tuning slide, goes to the 3rd valve, bypases the second valve to the first and on to the bell. This cornet was refinished in the 1970s by Boosey & Hawkes and has seen little use since. It came to me just to replace felts and align the the valves. Quite amazing condition for its age!... This cornet is for sale but not by me. I'm happy to pass on any enquiries to the seller.

03.01.2022 Here's a couple of used instruments recently arrived to DBR: Getzen Getzen 3850 Custom Series Cornet in gold plate finish. This cornet was recently cleaned and serviced here at DBR. It is in excellent conditon but does show some wear to the gold plating at the typical hand contact points (I'd put the plating at about 85%). The valves feel fantastic and were aligned by Reeves just over a year ago. 1st and 3rd trigger work smoothly and flawlessly. Comes with original case and R...eeves information card. $2750 OBO Paxman Academy French Horn. The horn was recently serviced and cleaned (not by DBR). It shows signs of both solder work and dent repair. Mechanically, it is in excellent shape and has decent compression for this Paxman model. There remains some denting and the lacquer is at about 50%. A good first double horn for a young player. $2000 OBO
