23.01.2022 How much protein should you eat? We recommend anywhere between 1.8g - 2.2g per kilo of bodyweight (if you are currently trying to lose weight, work off your goal weight). On a vegetarian diet, this means you have to put a little more thought into hitting your protein but it's 100% possible. Some of our go-to proteins are: @chobaniau 0.5% fat Greek Yoghurt: Yep, you know it; we're team Greek yoghurt here. Eggs and egg whites: To be clear, don't shy away from eating the wh...ole egg, it's extremely nutritious. However this is a great way to top up your meal with extra protein. Chickpeas/Lentils/Beans: We like to call them high protein carbs. These are great carb sources that help you reach your protein goal at the same time. Dairy: Milk in coffees and cottage cheese in meals or snacks. In addition to that some vegetables like spinach, peas, mushrooms are also relatively high in protein; they can be a great addition, however it's hard to really get a good amount of protein from just that. Generally, aim for 25g - 40g of protein with each meal - this of course depends on your goal, as well as meal frequency. If you do consume meat and/or dairy, we just want you to be aware of some of the labels to watch out for in Australia . Purchasing the highest quality meat/dairy is worth the extra money, not only for your own health but also the animal's welfare. Whilst we believe the latter is still questionable, it's definitely a step in the right direction. Please follow the link below for the full art...icle but here's a summary. Free range: Unfortunately there is no legislation covering free-range labelling in Australia. For poultry and pork, please ensure to purchase a certified product in addition to the term 'free range'. The main bodies are: Humane Choice, RSPCA approved, FREPA. Whilst they all meet minimum welfare requirements, their standards still differ considerably. Cows and sheep: Unfortunately there is no RSPCA endorsed beef or lamb scheme at present and free-range guarantees are limited. Organic: Buying organic meat has a free-range component. However the same issue applies here; there is no legislation for the term 'organic', so again, please watch out for certified organic produce such as Australian Certified Organics, NASAA, OFC. 16.01.2022 Reef We've had a very emotional week with Reef being very sick. You know how much you love your pet but you don't realise what it really means until they get sick and suffer silently in front of you; leaving you fear for their life and feeling helpless. Dogs are so very precious and I know all of you dog lovers would understand what this truly means . Reef was at the vets for two days, got everything checked but nothing was found. 13.01.2022 No, you don't need any supplements. As the name suggests, it's a supplement. It should only be taken if you really struggle getting enough protein from real food. Especially if you do consume meat, you should have no trouble getting enough protein from your diet. There is only so much protein your body can absorb at one time and in one day. However on a busy day or if you follow a vegetarian/vegan diet, a good quality protein powder is definitely a good option to help you hit... those goals. Now how big is 'one serve'? Flip the package over and you will see that this tiny tub is supposed to serve 10 people. TEN! I can tell you that once I get my hands on a dip, I ain't sharing with anyone. So, if I was to inhale this hole dip by myself, I would consume nearly 1000 calorie...s (YES, ONE THOUSAND) . We allow ourselves all the foods that we enjoy We don't freak out when we go to social events because we don't know how to make it fit into a "plan". There is no plan We don't do cheat meals, because we are not cheating on anything .. We only have less nourishing meals sometimes and that's ok; it's not our normal The good old 80/20 approach is GOLD. 80% of what we eat in a week are home... made meals from minimally processed, whole foods including all sorts of veggies, proteins and good carbs. 01.01.2022 Yes, eggs ARE GOOD for you! Years ago the advise was to limit eggs due to their high cholesterol in egg yolks. However, more recent research shows that colesterol that is in our food has little influence on blood levels of total "bad" cholesterol, however saturated fats and trans-fats have a much greater impact on cholesterol levels. Our liver produces most of the cholesterol and regulates the levels according to what we eat in a day. If your diet is full of processed foods a...nd unhealthy fats (for example, trans fats in deep fried foods), your liver may struggle to regulate those levels and produces too much. Our body works best on a balanced whole food diet. The Heart Foundation in Australia does not set a limit on the number of eggs you should eat a week for those with no medical condition. So please, don't worry about those eggs. 01.01.2022 Roughly eight years ago I decided to go vegetarian. Why? Simply because my love for animals took over and I could not stop thinking about me chewing on something that used to be alive. I haven't missed it for a second since . There is a lot of research outlining the benefits of a vegetarian diet when it comes to reducing risks of chronic diseases such as heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and reducing inflammation in the body. However, I am not here to convince... you of becoming a vegetarian, although I would 100% support you. All I want from this post today is for you to question your meat intake. Are you having bacon for breakfast, chicken for lunch and a steak for dinner ? Please do think about your longterm health, the balance of your protein, animal welfare and of course, the environmental impact. I highly recommend adding a few vegetarian days to your week.
