25.01.2022 Did you know that more than 300 Australian native species rely on tree hollows to live or rest in? Hollows in trees are extremely rare and can take up to 100 years to develop decent cavities for our feathery, furry and scaly critters to live in. Birds and reptiles as well as a range of native mammals, such as possum and bat species rely on both standing and fallen trees with hollows for habitat. ... Operation Hollows is targeting illegal firewood collection to protect wildlife habitat in our forests, parks and reserves. Authorised officers from the Conservation Regulator and Parks Victoria are conducting patrols and using advanced surveillance technology to target the illegal collection and selling of firewood from public land. To report the suspected illegal collection or selling of firewood, contact DELWP on 136 186. 25.01.2022 Its National Threatened Species Day a day to learn about plants and animals at risk of extinction. The iconic Mallleefowl is a threatened species that calls the Loddon Mallee region home. Malleefowl dont build nests in trees. Instead, they use their strong feet to scrape leaf litter and sand from the ground and into a large pile.... Eggs are then laid into a cavity at the top of the mound and covered over. The leaf litter begins to compost and generates heat, incubating the eggs. The male scrapes material onto or off the mound to keep the temperature just right. Amazing, huh? Over the past few years, Forest Fire Management Victoria officers have helped create more habitat for this amazing bird as part of a Connecting Country project funded by Mallee Catchment Management Authority. Theyve planted over 7,500 native trees, creating a wildlife corridor across 80 hectares of land that connects Wyperfeld National Park and Baring State Forest. #NationalThreatenedSpeciesDay #BiodiversityMonth

24.01.2022 While were all staying home as much as we can, were here to remind you that with spring in the air, so are swooping birds. Thats right, its time to break out the cable ties and googly eyes Swooping occurs every year during breeding season and is largely a defensive manoeuvre to protect nests. ... When you leave home, you must use a face covering, unless you have a lawful reason for not doing so. Visit www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au for more information. If you are venturing out, dont wing it here are some of our top tips to avoid being swooped: Know your local swooping hotspots and avoid them Move quickly, but dont run Cover your head with a hat, helmet or umbrella Consider drawing a pair of eyes on the back of your hat or helmet Never harass or feed wildlife. 21.01.2022 For every dad, carer or grandparent we love, staying apart this Sunday is going to be hard. But we can still make a big deal of our dads and carers in small ways that mean a lot. Because dad jokes are just as funny, and sometimes not, over phone or videocalls. Giftswe have delivered or a handwritten note in the mail, will mean a lot. And of course, theres the special ways we remember the dads weve lost. Now more than ever its the thought that counts, so lets thank our dads and carers a little differently this year. 03.01.2022 As the days become warmer, were beginning to see snakes emerge from their winter hibernation to bask in the sun and search for food and a mate. Eastern Brown Snakes, Tiger Snakes and Red-bellied Black Snakes are the most common types in North West Victoria and they are highly venomous. Here are some key points to remember about living in or visiting an area with snakes:... 1. When left alone, snakes present little or no danger to people. 2. If you see a snake, keep calm and move yourself and anyone with you (including pets) away from the area. 3. Dont attempt to capture or harm snakes, instead call DELWP on 136 186 for further advice, or call a licensed snake catcher. 4. Maintain lawns and clean up around your house, because snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks, timber, sheets of metal and building materials. 5. Undertake first aid training and ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately. We would like to remind everyone that snakes play an important role in our ecosystem and are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to capture, harm, or kill them.
