22.01.2022 Discover your backyard in Australia's Coral Coast... Meet Tory from Dirk Hartog Island, in the UNESCO Shark Bay World Heritage Area. This secluded, natural wond...erland is Western Australia's largest island, a National Park, and the site of the first recorded landing on Australian soil by Europeans in 1616. Today, the island's environment is being restored to how it would have been found those 404 years ago as part of Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia's 'Return to 1616' project. The island is referred to as an 'ark' for endangered wildlife and is renowned for its tranquil beaches, stunning landscape and nature-based adventures. Did you know there's a (rose) pink lake here too?! This is Tory's backyard, and she can't wait to welcome you. Accessible by barge from Steep Point (4WD only), light aircraft, or on tour, Dirk Hartog Island has a mix of accommodation available with dedicated camping sites around the island and the rustic retreat of Dirk Hartog Island Eco Lodge. #WanderOutYonder along the Coral Coast Highway to this pristine paradise to swim, snorkel or kayak at secluded beaches, explore on foot on a self-guided walk trail, fish and 4WD, and soak up stunning views of rugged, plunging cliffs, blowholes and rock pools. Or, simply take advantage of the opportunity to switch off and reconnect with nature Discover your backyard in Australia's Coral Coast today: https://bit.ly/australiascoralcoast Dirk Hartog Island, Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery and Visitor Centre, Western Australia, Australia.com

15.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Denham? Have you seen its flying emus? Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. It's ...an opportunity to share stories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom, Kalgoorlie and Rockingham... Denham is the western most town in Australia, 823 kilometres north of Perth. Its traditional owners are the Malgana Aboriginal people. When Europeans came they had already been in the area for 30,000 years. The area around Shark Bay first was settled by Europeans in the 1850s and was important for industries such as guano mining, pearling and pastoralism. Scientists and biologists have since come to recognise the region for its significant evolutionary and biological history and the abundance of rare wildlife species that thrive in the area. It's one of only a handful of sites worldwide that satisfy all criteria for World Heritage listing. Denham was gazetted in 1898. Prior to this it was known as "Freshwater Camp". The name was taken from the nearby Denham Sound named after Captain Herald (Henry) Denham of the Royal Navy who chartered Shark Bay in 1858. Today Denham is the gateway to Monkey Mia with its famous dolphins. It is home to around 750 people and even some flying emus! A number of buildings in Denham are built from blocks cut out of the coquina (a tiny cockle in the area) including the Old Pearler Restaurant, St Andrew’s Church, and parts of the Shark Bay Hotel. During the tourist season from April until September over 110,000 people come through the town, which now boasts an airport. Denham also has an attractive beach and a jetty popular with those interested in fishing and boating. Want to see more WA small towns? Follow the State Library on Facebook.
