13.01.2022 It is no mistake why so many people have given Prydes BioMare Cubes a Customer Satisfaction. If you are looking for the perfect feed for your horse this ...Winter, here is 6 reasons why BioMare Cubes is the #1 Choice for Aussie conditions. # - What is Set Recipe? A set recipe is just that it is a recipe that doesnt change. Which means each time a feed is made to a set recipe it will use exactly the same ingredients. Another way when making a horse feed is called least cost formulation. The prices of different feed ingredients change all the time. A Least Cost Formulation is where software is used to make a short-term recipe for a feed based on the cost of ingredients available at that particular time. It will use the cheapest ingredients. This means the ingredients used to make a feed will frequently change. Least cost formulations are not unethical. When done correctly they will provide the amount of calories (energy), crude protein, vitamins and minerals as specified on the label. However, the ingredients will change and protein quality can be compromised. # () We feed grain to horses for energy (from the starch they contain). But to extract this energy, horses have to be able to digest the starch. The problem is, the starch in cereal grains is protected by 5 barriers to digestion. When grains are fed uncooked, only a small proportion (usually <30%) of the starch is digested in the small intestine. The rest passes to the hindgut where it is fermented by hindgut bacteria and can cause many problems including: hindgut acidosis, reduced digestion of forages, reduced appetite, behavioural issues, vitamin deficiency, colic and laminitis. We need to break down some of the seeds barriers to make the starch able to be digested by the horse. This is where extrusion comes to the rescue! With the combination of milling and running through the extrusion process it provides your horse with cooked grains allowing your horse to fully extract nutrients and maintain healthy hindgut function. # & Contains minerals carefully selected for purity and bio-availability that will support sound bone and joint development. # Superior nutrient profile & digestibility will allow you to feed approximately 1kg / day less than a similar pelleted feed. # BioMare provides a versatile option for breeding farms. It is scientifically balanced to support fertility and milk production in broodmares, plus growth and sound development in weanling, yearling, 2 year olds and young stock. # Large cube allows horses to easily pick dropped feed off the ground. 06.01.2022 PREGNANCY TOXAEMIA ALERT FOR EWES (LAMBING SICKNESS) Over the last couple of weeks Hunter LLS District Vets have been seeing some pregnancy toxaemia or lambing... sickness in particular in twin bearing ewes across the region. Upper Hunter District Vet Jane Bennett said the occurrence has probably been caused by a combination of factors. Despite good rain there is, as yet, not as much available energy in the new green feed that is beginning to grow as well as little energy in the dry standing feed left from summer, said Dr Bennett. During cold, wet weather heavily pregnant ewes are not feeding as much as they should and are entering a glucose deficit. This, in conjunction with things like yarding, shearing etc can tip some ewes over the edge. Ewes that develop foot abscess in wet conditions are also less likely to feed and therefore at greater risk. Dr Bennet said it can also occur when twin bearing (usually crossbred) ewes are as fat as mud. This is due to the fact that fat ewes eat considerably less than thin ewes in late pregnancy. Hence the pregnancy toxaemia. All four of these predisposing conditions may be occurring in the region at present, so its important to keep an eye on pregnant ewes and give nutritional support and/or treatment as required. Ewes within four weeks of lambing may require supplementation with energy dense feeds such as grain or lupins remembering to introduce in increasing ammounts over a couple of weeks. Ewes showing signs of disease may respond to treatment with glycerol based drenches. If down they may respond to calcium borogluconate injection (4 in 1 solution usually used for milk fever in cows) in conjunction with glycerol orally. Prevention is best by managing ewe condition, particularly those bearing twins, said Dr Bennett. Scanning of ewes in early pregnancy and feeding to maintain a fat score of less than 3.5 can be helpful. Please be aware Pregnancy Toxaemia can also have similar impacts on goats. More detailed information is available from https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//Pregnancy-toxaemia-in-breeding You can contact your Hunter LLS District Vet team by calling 1300 795 299 or visit our website for more information https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au/regions/hunter

03.01.2022 Hunter Local Land Services District Vets are warning there have been several cases in the last two weeks of weaner cattle dying from anaemia (lack of red blood ...cells) caused by Haemonchus placei (Barbers Pole Worm). Signs of anaemia include pale mucous membranes (i.e. pale gums, conjunctiva and vagina), bottle jaw, and exercise intolerance (i.e. anaemic animals lag behind the mob, and spend a lot of time lying down). Barbers Pole Worm is a blood sucking worm that lives in the fourth stomach of ruminants. Barbers Pole Worm has become the most significant cattle worm in our coastal districts. A related worm, Haemonchus contortus (also called BPW), causes many deaths from anaemia in sheep and goats in our region. Conditions presently favour the build-up of infective Barbers Pole Worm larvae on pasture, and young cattle are particularly susceptible to developing large burdens of this parasite. Cattle owners are advised to undertake a worm test to assess whether their young cattle are carrying significant worm burdens, and drench accordingly. Owners of young cattle are advised to at least check for signs of anaemia, and drench accordingly. If anaemic animals are to be yarded for inspection or drenching, they need to be handled very quietly with minimal stress and exertion to avoid affected animals collapsing and dying. Autumn and winter are key drench points for most producers. Worm control going into winter is regarded as particularly important to ensure that cattle, especially recently weaned cattle, do not have the added burden of parasites reducing production efficiency as a cause of ill thrift and death. Those farmers buying batches of young cattle at saleyards are strongly advised to drench and vaccinate new arrivals as part of their Farm Biosecurity Plan. For more information please talk to your private vet or contact your Hunter Local Land Services District Vet on 1300 795 299.
