23.01.2022 A Prayer for the East Australian bushfires Lord of all days and years, and time and eternity, You made this land and have blessed us with its riches and beauty.... We have not always cared for the land, the wildlife, the waterways as you would have us do. You are a gracious and forgiving God, a refuge to all who seek your shelter, our strong defence in trial and tribulation. Send rain we pray to extinguish flames and heal our land. Mercifully protect life and property. Give help and hope to our neighbours assailed by fire. Comfort and provide for those who grieve. Uphold those who suffer loss, Give peace and hope to those bewildered and broken-hearted. We thank you for men and women of courage and selflessness. We thank you for brave communities of care and support, We thank you for those who share your comfort and hope, We thank you for those at a distance giving and praying. Lord, you sent your Son so that we would know your power to save, your presence with your people in this world of turmoil, and your promise to renew the whole creation. Turn our hearts to you, that we may have faith for this day and hope for eternity. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen. 15.01.2022 A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him. - Isaiah 11:1-2 These words f...rom last night's liturgy have stayed with me during the day. Our salvation comes from something small, tender, and vulnerable, something hardly noticeable. God, who is the Creator of the Universe, comes to us in smallness, weakness, and hiddenness. I find this a hopeful message. Somehow, I keep expecting loud and impressive events to convince me and others of God's saving power; but over and over again I am reminded that spectacles, power plays, and big events are the ways of the world. Our temptation is to be distracted by them and made blind to the "shoot that shall sprout from the stump." When I have no eyes for the small signs of God's presence - the smile of a baby, the carefree play of children, the words of encouragement and gestures of love offered by friends - I will always remain tempted to despair. The small child of Bethlehem, the unknown young man of Nazareth, the rejected preacher, the naked man on the cross, he asks for my full attention. The work of our salvation takes place in the midst of a world that continues to shout, scream, and overwhelm us with its claims and promises. But the promise is hidden in the shoot that sprouts from the stump, a shoot that hardly anyone notices. 12.01.2022 An message from bishop Peter about the corona virus and church practice - newcastleanglican.org.au 10 March 2020... Coronavirus (COVID-19) - Changed guidance on Church Practices Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness where symptoms range from a mild cough to pneumonia. Some people recover easily, others may get very sick very quickly. We have a particular concern in our ministry as many of our people are in age groups who are affected more profoundly by the coronavirus. The Australian Government continues to advise that the people at risk are those have recently been areas where the virus is present or been in close contact with someone who is a confirmed case of coronavirus. Good hygiene practices prevent the spread of infection. It includes: washing your hands often with soap and water using a tissue and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze avoiding close contact with others, such as touching Churches should already be following best-hygiene practices. I now authorise and request the suspension of physical contact during the sharing of the peace; physical contact during a blessing or "laying on of hands"; the administration of the chalice I request that in all church services holy communion is administered in one-kind only. Priests presiding at the Eucharist, communion administrators and servers should wash their hands, preferably with an alcohol-based (minimum 60%) hand-sanitiser prior to setting up the communion elements and prior to administering the elements. Intinction is not a satisfactory alternative (even by celebrants or communion-administrators) as this represents an infection transmission route. Single communion cups have been authorised in limited circumstances and do not represent the normative Anglican practice. It is good practice for churches to have hand-sanitisers available for parishioners to use in church and wherever food is served. Care needs to be taken about food service. Consideration should be given to serving food rather than food being offered for self-service. Please be in touch with me if you have any questions. +Peter Contact Us THE DIOCESAN OFFICE PO Box 817 Newcastle NSW 2300 PHONE (02) 4926 3733 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE newcastleanglican.org.au CONNECT ON Copyright 2020 Newcastle Anglican.
