21.01.2022 Shire appoints Acting CEO for a September start Shire of Denmark Council announced Mr David Schober to the position of Acting Chief Executive Officer this week, with Mr Schober commencing the role at the end of September. Mr Schober is the current Manager of Community Services at the Shire of Denmark and has a wealth of experience across various industries. He has previously held executive positions at the City of Albany and was the Regional Manager of St John Ambulance.... Shire President Cr Ceinwen Gearon said the decision to appoint an interim acting CEO was influenced by a number of factors including the 2019 local government elections. Council felt that it would be unfair for an outgoing Council to appoint a permanent CEO. For the position to be successful, the group felt the new Council should have ownership over the CEO recruitment and appointment process, she said. Cr Gearon said Mr Schober is an excellent choice in continuing the Shire’s strong workplace culture. The Shire has made tremendous progress over the past year in its strategic direction and service delivery. Recent culture survey results have shown us that staff highly rate the Shire as a positive place to work and we think David is perfectly placed to continue the good work undertaken to date, she said. Mr Schober says he is confident in taking on the challenges ahead. I look forward to carrying on the work of implementing a strong strategic framework and upholding the values of the organisation, staff and this unique community, he said See more

17.01.2022 SHARKS have been sighted in shallow water at the popular Prawn Rock Channel and should be treated as dangerous. Fisheries officers have visited Denmark a couple of time since Tuesday to assess the situation and assist Denmark Shire rangers regarding the sharks in the channel. One of the sharks had died and Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Fisheries officers removed the carcass about 11am today. A general shark advice has been issued due. On Monda...y and Tuesday swimmers and dog walkers saw a 1.5m shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, at the popular recreation area and a video clip of the sighting was posted on social media. DPIRD south regional manager Russell Adams said most of the 100 or more shark species in WA were capable of injuring humans. But an overwhelming majority of them were not aggressive under most circumstances and white, bull and tiger sharks were considered the most significant threat. Wilson Inlet has been open to the sea for a long period this year, almost seven months, and while it remains open it is possible for sharks to swim up into the channel. Fisheries officers from DPIRD regularly monitor the area. Mr Adams said people needed to be aware that shark sightings had been made and to take that into consideration when they used the area. He urged anyone who saw a shark to report their sighting to Water Police on 9442 8600. Before heading to the beach download the SharkSmart WA app or check the Shark Activity map to see the latest reported sightings and tagged shark detections. A member of the public reported a 1.5m shark of unknown species about 12.30pm on February 2, 100m offshore at Ocean Beach. There was another reported beach sighting at 10am the next day. The last sighting reported was of one shark near the rope swing opposite the channel car park. See more

01.01.2022 From the Water Corp: Wilson Inlet sandbar to open this week Water Corporation is set to open the Wilson Inlet sandbar in Denmark later this week, following recent advice from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and the Shire of Denmark. Water Corporation Great Southern Regional Manager Adrian Stewart said Wilson Inlet was close to reaching an optimal water level for the opening of the sandbar, under the protocol put in place in 2009. As water levels have bee...n rising in the area following the recent rainfall, we are close to reaching a trigger point to activate the opening of the inlet, Mr Stewart said. We anticipate the opening will occur on Thursday this week, to take advantage of the predicted tidal conditions, but it depends on local conditions on the day. Mr Stewart said. Mr Stewart said the sandbar would be opened at around the same time as last year and it always attracted spectators to watch it occur. As the opening attracts a crowd, we cordon off the area where we will be working to ensure the safety of people on the beach, Mr Stewart said. We also want to remind surfers to be mindful of the potential for changeable conditions in the vicinity of the opening, due to the increased exchange of water between Wilson Inlet and the ocean. Mr Stewart said opening the sandbar was part of the plan to manage potential flooding in the area, and the Shire of Denmark and Department of Water and Environmental Regulation worked together to advise Water Corporation of the best time.
