15.01.2022 TOOTHACHE Its one of the most common reason people seek to see a dentist. Tooth Decay is one of the reasons why a tooth might ache. Decay is caused by erosion or weakening of tooth enamel due to food acid caused by plaque. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that grows on teeth and loves to eat up food particles left on or around your tooth. Bacteria excretes acid that dissolves the tooth surface causing a hole. Small decays are painless and can be treated if caught ea...rly. As decay progresses it grows towards the middle of the tooth where the nerve lives. Once the nerve is infected then treating decay isnt as easy. Symptoms- sensitivity to cold, hot, sweet or touch. Treatment- fillings; if left too long- root canal or extraction Prevention- brush twice daily and floss If you suspect or have been told you have a small decay that needs treated and cant get to the dentist due to the current restrictions- Smear toothpaste onto your floss and floss in between teeth. 04.01.2022 COLD SENSITIVE TEETH Sensitivity to cold is a common dental symptom. Most often, the reason for cold sensitive teeth are gum recession exposing a small part of the root crack in a tooth recent dental work... lost enamel which exposes the inner layer of tooth called dentine Weak or inflamed gums Sometimes people can also experience sensitivity to other things like hot liquid or food, hard foods or acidic food or drinks. SYMPTOMS of cold sensitivity - can be short and sharp, lasts for a second or so. Or, prolonged, where the pain after exposure to cold can linger for a couple of minutes after. TREATMENT of cold sensitivity- commence using a sensitivity toothpaste like sensodyne, Colgate pro-relief or Pronamel. Avoid cold foods. If the symptoms persist for over 3 days, see your dentist who may recommend filling of exposed root or covering of the exposed root with gum or flouride varnishes. PREVENTION - gentle brushing with a soft or extra soft toothbrush. Hard bristles of your tooth brush could be causing damage to the gums; avoid increased exposure to acidic food or drink- like soft drinks or sucking on lemons; increase water intake, if you suspect wear of enamel due to grinding - get a custom made night guard PRO-TIP - for those pesky lone areas causing short sharp sensitivity, get a pea sized amount of sensitivity tooth paste on your finger and rub it along the gum area of the affected teeth. Dont rinse and let the toothpaste sit there. This will help clog up the nerve endings on the exposed tooth and help reduce symptoms.
