24.01.2022 Lets talk about Health To celebrate Dental Health Week 2020, over the next days we will be illustrating some BAD and GOOD Health habits. HEALTHY AGEING... According to the World Health Organization, the pace of population ageing is much faster than in the past. Health outcomes in older people are mostly dictated by genetics. However, they can also be due to the physical and social environments to which they are exposed. Having a balanced diet and exercising regularly, for example, are behaviours that improve physical and mental capacity and contribute to minimising the risk of non-communicable diseases. Remember: it is never too late to invest in your mental and physical health! Feed your body with a healthy diet, try to see positives in each day and you will be investing in an emotionally balanced, and potentially longer, life for yourself. 23.01.2022 Today is WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY and our Infection Control Coordinator has outlined a few ways we keep our patients safe: "World Patient Safety Day is a World Health Organisation initiative, and it aims to draw attention to patient safety as a global health priority. The focus of this year is Health worker safety: A priority for patient safety, in other words, if we look after our Health care workers by improving our levels of Infection Control, increasing working enviro...nment safety and improved training around medication management, this will also increase benefits for our patients. At DPlus, we prepare and implement a detailed organisational Risk Management Plan in order to reduce risks for our patients. With every process we undertake, we look out for optimal outcomes for our patients by: 1. Raising awareness and targeted training on how to Break the Chain of infection by hand hygiene, cough etiquette the use of Personal Protective Equipment such as masks and gloves. 2. Increased Environmental Cleaning of surgeries and waiting rooms. 3. Adhering to an Anti-Microbial Stewardship programme (this is where dentists will seek options before resorting to antibiotic prescription). 4. Training for staff to recognise patients who need higher care. In other words, those with cognitive impairment or a disability that might hinder their understanding of the treatment process. 5. Recruiting staff of the highest calibre and maintaining Dental Practice Accreditation compliance. So, today, on World Patient Safety Day, you can rest assured that at DPlus we will never stop seeking improved ways of enhancing the safety for all of our patients." 23.01.2022 R U OK? Things are not always OK and people are not necessarily explicit about what is going in their lives. Having someone to talk to can make a big difference and even save lives. Some signs in people's actions and words can indicate that it's time to begin a conversation. Learn what to look out for at the R U OK? Website by clicking on the link below... https://www.ruok.org.au/signs Let's do our part and help people around us who sometimes just need someone to talk to... and why not to start with the question "are you ok?" 21.01.2022 Happy Womens Health Week! The purpose of this nation-wide campaign is to help women to make healthier choices and to understand more about how their bodies work. PERIODONTAL DISEASE & PREGNANCY... Several studies, including the World Oral Health Report (2003), state that there is a relationship between general and oral health. Literature also shows that hormonal changes during pregnancy affect the immune response to bacterial plaque and drive blood vessel and gum changes. During pregnancy, a womans teeth and gums undergo many changes that may be related to periodontal disease, including gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (inflammation of the tissues around the teeth). However, the clinical findings of gingivitis in pregnant and non-pregnant women are identical. In the presence of plaque (bacteria film formed on the surface of teeth), greater gum inflammation can occur, even though the amounts of biofilm (layers of bacterial cells) are similar to those in non-pregnant women. Dental Health Services Victoria advises, visiting a dentist while pregnant is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for your own wellbeing and that of your unborn child. Dental check-ups and routine dental treatments are safe during pregnancy, however, during the first trimester, some procedures and medication should be avoided, so make sure you mention to your dentist if you think you might be pregnant. www.dentistryplus.com.au #oralhealth #dentalforpeople #PerthSmile #perthnow References: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0884217516301599 Morelli EL, Broadbent JM, Leichter JW, Thomson WM (2018) Australian Dental Journal, Pregnancy, parity and periodontal disease Arafat AH. 14.01.2022 AUSTRALIA & ORAL HEALTH No matter where you are in the world, peoples oral health can be affected by dental caries and gum diseases (like gingivitis and periodontitis). The good news is that these diseases are largely preventable! The bad news is that, once established, these conditions can have a significant impact not just on the oral health, but also on peoples quality of life. According to The Oral Health Tracker 2020, a progress report that provides an update... on how Australian adults' oral health is tracking, the number of adults with untreated and potentially painful tooth decay has increased substantially from a quarter of adults to around a third of adults. Also, there was a reduction of 6.7% of adults surveyed who had visited a dentist for a check-up (since 2018) and only 53% of the surveyed people are brushing twice a day. Early prevention is key to avoid oral health issues. Implementing good habits, such as: brushing and flossing, reducing sugar intake, receiving regular fluoride applications and going for your routine dental check-ups are super important! With new technologies being launched at a fast pace, TV, mobile phones, laptops, tablets and video games are being used by kids, teenagers and adults more than ever. Long periods of screen time, however, can have a negative impact on people's health - including kids, who are still undergoing physical, social and intellectual development. Some of the issues caused by the extensive use of digital devices, include: - Poor sleeping patterns; - Depression; - Reduced social interactions and social skills; - Poor posture; - Less physical activity. Do you depend on your computer or mobile to work? Try using Blue Block Glasses / Filters, and avoid using any digital device prior to going to bed. Overall, why not invest your spare time in HEALTHY hobbies, like listening to music, playing sports, reading a good book or catching up with friends? By making small changes in your lifestyle, you will be improving your body, mind and soul!
