17.01.2022 I truly believe that we are all beautiful in our own way. Every part of us including our curves, bumps, lumps, stretch marks and all. We should be embracing and loving on ourselves (Im right there with you on working on loving all of me) but I get vintage can be exclusive and not inclusive due to our changing bodies and living in a different age. There is sooooo much pressure on us to fit an ideal which is totally unrealistic. If Im honest Im a bit fed up with it all and ...am ready to wear clothing that fits my body and makes me feel good. Why not make clothing that fits me? Even better why not combine my love of vintage and desired to wear clothing that embraces my curves and body? This was the moment 2 years ago I decided to take my sewing to the next level, study fashion design and move into reworking and refashioning the ugly and unloved vintage into beautiful wearable vintage. For the moment Im closing down the store to focus on making beautiful pieces and pivoting Desert Lily Vintage into this new direction. I will be sharing my journey and creations on this platform and taking custom orders. What does that look like? 09.01.2022 Conscious Consumption! What does it mean? Personally this was something that I had not heard about myself or understand fully until a interesting conversation unexpectedly happened in the early stages of my relationship with my husband (back in 2011). Although I can not remember the conversation (I many have had a few ) what did stick out was one statement that shook me to the core consumerism is the modern day disease and we have way too much stuff for our actual needs.... Wow! Since this conversation the idea about conscious consumption has come up before every purchase we make. Some questions my husband would ask me and now I ask myself before every purchase is. *Is this purchase a need or a want? *Will this purchase impact my/our life for the better? *Will this purchase have a negative or positive impact on the environment? *Can I buy this from a small business or somewhere within my local community or within Australia? *Am I getting this for the best possible price? If answering these questions align to values and I get a good feeling in my heart and not a sinking feeling in my gut then I carry through with the purchase. We apply this to everything now from groceries, to clothing, furniture and the even the nic nacs around the home. Are you a conscious consumer? 03.01.2022 Feeling slightly nostalgic tonight and reflecting on the very frist reworked piece (well it was called up-cycling during that time) that I completed 4 years ago back in 2016. Wowser! I even created a youtube video documenting the process. Its a retro dress that was a little too busy for my liking so I decided to minimise the embroidery attachements and sorten up the hem and sleeve.
