16.01.2022 I see a theme developing... my posts becoming a catalog of lighting design fails... I visited a post office locally, as many folk do... Behind the counter they used to have 3 halogen downlights lighting up the wall... 3 nice cones of light making a bit of a feature and barely noticeable to the customer, Someone in their wisdom has installed 3 of my least favorite "integrated" downlights in their place - with their 120 degree spread of piercing LED lightsource ... the troubl...e being they are now just above eye height for the customer who now has to deal with 3 points of glare screaming at them from behind the shop assistant. It really doesnt help them sell stamps. I as a regular customer of that post office am thinking of alternative places i can post my parcels... Segway to lighting design... what i do for a living, help folk identify what their lighting issues really are and to recommend appropriate fittings for them to install that will compliment their business, their office, their home... the number to call 1300 550 566 See more

12.01.2022 Whats the thing with poor lighting design? Time for a rant! In this paradigm of energy efficiency and LED fittings there is no excuse for bad design... But i see it constantly...new homes, retail shops, even restaurants aspiring to create a pleasant mood in the expectation of attracting customers back! Stark glare points on the ceiling screaming at you when you enter a space..It was bad enough back in the day with those halogen downlights - all those little spotlights pepperi...ng the ceiling leaving an ill-defined void behind....but really it is just becoming inexcusable these days! It doesnt have to be like this! With all due respect to electricians who oversee these installations, glare ain't good... you dont need to see a light source to be able to see stuff! In fact it is quite the opposite. Next time you go into a space where these glare points have materialised, just think about what you do... Your eyes are being drawn up to the ceiling against your will - not what you really want to be doing, away from the floor, the couch, the interior design that you paid a fortune for! If you notice the artwork on the walls at all it will be as an afterthought... after your senses have been assaulted by glare.... aaaarrrrhhhh! Thanks for "hearing" me out... if this rings true for you and you need help in resolving the issues call me on 1300 550 566. (Dont get me started on "daylight" colour temperature being "brighter" - I'll leave that for another rant another day!) Cheers everyone See more

11.01.2022 Here you go... a few words about colour temperature Perhaps this is fairly basic stuff to many of you but I will write it out anyway Most people have a good idea about what the difference is between warm white and cool white light and its effect on ambiance and apparent brightness. a few points The concept of pure white light is a distraction! White light is actually a mixture of every colour under the rainbow literally! Light consists then all the colours we see in t...he spectrum from red through to blue, and the character of that light will depend on what is in it Heavy concept So lets keep it simple if there is more red light in the spectrum than blue light the white light will have a slight red or warm feel and vice versa, proportionally more blue, it will feel starker If an object has warm earthy tones ie a brown leather couch or red brick wall, it will look better if the colour balance is warm. Without the warm colours in the light the object will appear flat, dull, and lifeless! So where does temperature come in to this Metal objects if heated enough will glow. We talk about something being white hot! That object say a tungsten filament in an old fashioned incandescent globe is actually very hot approx 2500o C (or 2800o Kelvin). We take this to be warm white. If that filament was heated further (without melting) the light emited would gradually shift toward the blue end of the spectrum so that at 4000K it would appear as cool white, 5000K natural and 6000K ‘daylight Very likely the bit of metal would have melted long before reaching such temperatures so this is theoretical! The effective temperature to create this effect! See more
