24.01.2022 I attended a gathering of Life Stories Australia members a couple of weeks ago & one of the things we talked about was the possible impact of the stress related to carers and some life story writers working with people who are grieving or in traumatic situations. I have since written a blog about the Pain of Grief - the price we pay for loving. Interested parties can access it through this link https://destobin.com.au/the-pain-of-grief-the-price-we-pay/

21.01.2022 Last night May 9 I was privileged to make the annual Laurie McCalman presentation at the Prahran Mechanics Institute Library as part of Heritage Week. PMI is an extraordinary library containing over 30,000 volumes relating to the history of Victoria. Next Wednesday May 15 I will be speaking to the Malvern Historical Society about my book 'Just a man Called Phonse' and my life growing up in Malvern when the kids were free to roam the streets, laneways and parks and play foo...ty and cricket in the street without being in any danger - although I once fell out of a palm tree into the pond in the Malvern gardens while fishing for yabbies, gashing my head on a rock beside the pond. You are welcome to come to the Phoenix Park Community Centre at 22 Rob Roy Rd East Malvern at 7:00 pm when I address the topic 'You can take the Boy out of Malvern but you can't take malvern out of the Boy' I'd love to see you there.

21.01.2022 On Thursday 9 May I will be speaking at the Prahran Mechanics Institute at 7pm and would love it for you to attend. Please RSVP your attendance by clicking on the event listing below. Des Tobin

19.01.2022 The Australian community should be thankful for the level of professional care being provided by our front-line caregivers during this difficult and dreadful ti...me. We are all indebted to our health care professionals - doctors, nurses, paramedics - and those who carry out the logistically massive task of testing and contact tracing. We should also acknowledge our hospital volunteers, cleaners, orderlies and mortuary staff who care for and prepare the bodies of deceased COVID patients to be safely collected by funeral service personnel. The women and men of the funeral service industry work long and difficult hours and they perform diverse, stressful and vitally important tasks. As one who has spent a lifetime involved in funeral service, I have witnessed almost every imaginable 'cause' of death. From 'natural' causes, sudden infant death, road trauma, suicide, homicide, and 'natural' disasters, I have seen it all. I have seen funeral service personnel selflessly offer their care, understanding, support and professional competence to the families they serve. And I have seen embalmers and mortuary assistants reverently care for and prepare the bodies of deceased persons for funeral rituals that will almost universally acknowledge death and celebrate life. This work has never been more important than it is today and funeral service personnel have continued to perform their tasks fully and faithfully during this time. They are not often listed among our 'front-line' workers at times like these. They should be. I just want to give a 'shout out' and say thank you to each and every one of these people. Know that your work matters and makes a difference!

18.01.2022 It may not be history related, but it’s funny!

16.01.2022 Having a busy time on the guest speaking circuit talking about my book Just a Man Called Phonse (and a little bit about some of my 'exploits' over these past 80 years. Happy to speak at any social or service club at a mutually convenient time. I'd love to hear from any interested parties.

15.01.2022 A few words about Peter Toogood - an 89 year old, devoted husband, father and grandfather, who was buried in Hobart last week. Peter had a distinguished career ...as a teacher in the Tasmanian Education department and was one of Australia's finest ever amateur golfers. His many playing achievements included: Australian Amateur Champion 1954 NZ Amateur Champion 1956 Tasmanian Amateur Champion 10 times Tasmanian Open Champion 8 times Leading amateur 1954 Open Championship Leading Amateur Australian Open Championship 2 times 36 Club championships at 5 different clubs Australian Representative 5 times In addition, he was an accomplished golf course designer and was Captain of the Tasmanian State team for decades. His funeral was attended by many hundreds of mourners and many gathered at the 'wake' that followed at the Royal Hobart Golf Club. Vale peter. Limited copies of the biography of Peter Toogood that I wrote and was published by Killaghy Publishing in 2002 are available by visiting destobin.com.au
