15.01.2022 Yesterday we lost our beloved dog, companion and the star of my childrens book(s), The Comet Series. I adopted him at 10 weeks old and he was due to turn 11 years old on September 2. He touched many lives with his gorgeous nature. He was loyal and protective of his family, particularly me.... In 2012 he moved across Australia with me, from South Australia to the Australian Capital Territory and was happiest as long as he was with me. He loved our road trips, holidays, walks, cuddles and watching the occasional movie - his favourites were Hotel for Dogs, Bolt, Toy Story and Alice in Wonderland to name a few. He formed a sweet bond with our two year old daughter, who recently started calling him "Omet" opposed to puppy or dog We love him so much and will miss him dearly. 03.01.2022 At the beginning of September I was diagnosed with an annoying but completely manageable disease that many pregnant women get - gestational diabetes. I managed it with my first pregnancy and was fortunate I called around for a full glucose tolerance test (GTT) as without it I wouldn't have been properly diagnosed on a fasting blood test alone. Many medical testing facilities were not offering it due to Covid-19. Fortunately I am managing it with diet and exercise again. Lots... of food and time tracking. Blood glucose levels are tested four times a day via finger pricking. Without managing such a disease it poses a risk to both the mother and the baby. Not only for the baby while it is in utero, but also following the birth there is an increased risk of the mother and baby developing type 2 diabetes and if the gestational diabetes is not managed appropriately there is the chance for the child to struggle with obesity throughout their life. Managing it the second time around has been easier and I have learnt a lot about nutrition and what foods are high in glucose, carbs and if eating things from a packet, anything over 7% in sugars on the nutritional information on the package will spike my levels. One benefit is I can still drink a hot chocolate, eat 78% or higher dark chocolate or bake diabetic friendly cakes that do not spike my blood glucose levels.
