22.01.2022 It's time to register your neighbourhood Christmas gathering. We're praying that dozens of people from many churches across the North West will host neighbourhood Christmas gatherings to celebrate Jesus' birth. The intimate local gatherings replace a formal combined carols event or special city-wide service. Registering your event means others will be able to find you, and we can report back on the impact of these special gatherings. Register at www.devonportchurches.org.au It's not too late to host a gathering. Invitations you can personalise and then letterbox or hand deliver are available from your church or A New Page bookshop in Edward Street, Devonport. #devonportchurches #christmasindevonport #christmas2020 #christmasgatherings #anewpage

21.01.2022 I get by with a little help from my friends . . . Be that friend this year by becoming a learner-driver mentor or one-one-one student mentor. It's the best 70-90 minutes you can invest in someone else. Our next mentor training is from 9am-3pm on Friday, February 26, at the chaplaincy office, 130 William Street. We're looking for ordinary people like you who simply want to make a difference! Book your place or find out how you can be the answer to someone's prayer at [email protected] or call 6420 7575. #chaplaincy #mentoring #schools #learnerdrivermentoring #devonportchurches #devonport #bethechange #makeadifference #listen #loavesandfishes

20.01.2022 We are living in unique times. Every day our team of Chaplains and Mentors connect with people who are desperately searching for "a hope" to get them through these crazy uncertain times. Most are dealing with this as hidden and unseen torment, doing these hard times all alone. The severe impact of disconnection, isolation and loneliness is a reality for many Tasmanians today. Please consider a Tax-Deductible Gift before the 30th of June 2020 and support our team. 20.01.2022 I try to be the mentor I wish I had growing up. It has been my great privilege to be a mentor to many teenagers and adults. It’s a position of trust where I ge...t to help mentorees articulate their feelings, ask questions, share their fears, failures, triumphs, plans and dreams. Together we identify areas for improvement, reflect on disappointments and failures, laugh and cry, set goals, make plans, plot a path, smash down obstacles and overcome, little-by-little. Sometimes, when it’s appropriate and helpful, I will share my own fears and failures to reassure my mentoree that I am flawed and continue to struggle, fall, rise again, dust myself off, and walk on. I also want them to know I have a mentor because I still need the wisdom of others. However, my major role is to listen and encourage in equal measure, without judgment, condemnation or giving trite answers to complex questions. Some of my experiences may be similar, but I haven’t walked in their shoes or negotiated their particular path. I handle with care because the people I mentor are valuable they are priceless. I believe anyone who can set aside their own ego and agenda and listen intently with the intention of championing another’s passion and purpose can be an excellent mentor. You don’t need a degree or have lived a perfect life. Messy is real. But you do have to care, be able to see the best in others, and be willing to be a constant positive presence. We are not trying to create clones, but self-assured, resilient, confident and resourceful young people who understand their value and place in the world. We have a responsibility to reach back and give a hand up to those coming behind us; not just our children and grandchildren, but vulnerable children and youth in our midst who need some extra care, particularly in these uncertain and unprecedented times. Most of us can do a day’s training and commit to 90 minutes a week to be an intentional friend to another through the Devonport Chaplaincy program. Mentors range from university students to retirees in their seventies, and men and women of all ages in between who come with their unique experiences, flaws and skills. We can mentor while walking, doing art, woodwork or teaching your mentoree to drive, or helping them with their homework. It’s practical, profound and rewarding. I grew up in an age before students had access to social workers, career guidance counsellors, chaplains, psychologists and personal mentors. Sometimes I feel like I stumbled through my early life, carried by the currents of circumstances, my own forceful personality, and the expectations of others. Some would say it was a simpler, more innocent time, but we still battled with the same childhood angst of negotiating puberty, bullying, abuse and isolation, family dysfunction, alcohol and drug abuse, sibling rivalry, broken relationships, racism, sexism, school strife, and self-esteem issues. We had the same fears about not fitting in, not passing maths, or English, or economics, not measuring up, not having any money, not being able to get a job, find a friend, or a safe place to deal with our shame and feelings of inadequacy and despair. I had mentors, influencers who came and went at various times of my life: football coaches, teachers, friends’ parents, work colleagues, bosses, my sisters’ boyfriends, my father-in-law. They all imparted various forms of wisdom; some good, and some not-so-good. The mentoring was infrequent, haphazard, unstructured, and without any outcomes. I discovered the importance of mentoring far too late. It wasn’t until my forties that I opened up my life to another. I still have a mentor 15 years later. I wish I had received more intentional mentoring when I was younger; a stable, caring confidant who could have injected courage and strength when mine was failing. Someone who could say the right thing at the right time, ask insightful questions, listen to my heart, share their experience, direct me to resources, people and places that would help me thrive. However, I can be that person for others. I invite you to join me. Get involved at https://devonportchaplaincy.org.au/can-i-help/ Paul O’Rourke is the community partnership manager for Devonport Chaplaincy and Loaves and Fishes Tasmania. 16.01.2022 Do something great! We are in urgent need of volunteers to help a couple of hours weekdays collecting and delivering bread and breakfast supplies to schools and neighbourhood centres. It's easy work, but mighty important. Applicants need to have a licence and either have, or be willing to get, a Working with Vulnerable Children card. Vehicles, fuel and insurance are provided. Shifts are up to two hours. We need help Monday to Friday from 10.30am to noon to collect bread from ...Coles Devonport. We also need a driver to collect breakfast supplies from our Loaves and Fishes warehouse at 7am and deliver to hungry students. If you can help, contact Adam Lyall [email protected] or call 6420 7575. Who do you know who has the time and willingness to help? Let them know. #schoolbreakfast #loavesandfishes #loavesandfishestasmania #devonportchaplaincy #schools See more
15.01.2022 We know of dozens of street parties, backyard barbecues and picnics in the park as people from various local churches hosted Christmas gatherings. Some even took the time to register their events online https://www.devonportchurches.org.au/gatherings-12-days-of- although most did not. Thank you to those who have posted gatherings, or who are still to celebrate with neighbours and friends over the next few days and beyond. #christmasatmyplace #devonportchurches #devonport #christmas2020 #christmasgatherings

14.01.2022 The Christian Leaders in Devonport are committed to making God’s heart for humanity real by serving together. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you. Matthew 5:48b (The Message) The Devonport Churches are committed to sharing the message of the love of Jesus. We believe that Jesus is a God of love, a God of healing, a God of freedom, release and restoration. There are many testimonies across our Devonport Churches of lives being radically... transformed. The Devonport Churches believe that God heals through many forms, sometimes directly, and sometimes through the support and intervention of health professionals. As the Devonport Churches, we do not recommend that any person should cease prescribed medication or advise others to cease prescribed medication or withdraw from professional support or counselling, without first seeking the advice of their doctor and/or health professional. The Devonport Churches stand united in the mission of Jesus - to share the gospel message to all people, seeing them healed and set free. The method is based on guidelines outlined in the Bible, through relationship, and primarily through a heart of love and compassion. We will continue to offer that love and compassion, regardless of people’s response. We encourage all believers of Christ to join us in this mission. The Devonport Christian Leaders have agreed on this Statement together. 03.01.2022 There’s an obvious trust, ease and respect between driver mentor, Georgie Hutchinson, and her learner, Tash McLean-Lowe, as they reflect on the past three month...s together through Devonport Chaplaincy’s Easy Ps program. The driver training program matches experienced drivers with learners who would not otherwise have the opportunity, means or confidence to learn to drive. Georgie and the other mentors provide a safe space for their mentorees to share their hopes and fears, and ask questions, imparting wisdom and important life skills, as well as teaching their young proteges to drive. Tash, 18, is completing her final year of high school online as a prelude to studying men’s hairdressing (barbering) at TAFE. About a year ago, school counsellors and youth groups I was attending noticed a big change in my physical and mental health, she said. Tash was suffering from anxiety and could no longer live at home. My mental issues also took a hit during COVID. One of the counsellors where Tash lives suggested the Easy P’s program as a means of gaining an important skill and rebuilding her confidence. Georgie, who is a mother of three adult children and a retired schoolteacher, said she felt privileged that Tash felt comfortable enough to share her life. I’m a member of Zonta International which aims to empower women, she said. There is a shortage of women mentors which puts girls like Tash at a disadvantage of being able to get a licence, and this also limits their employment opportunities. Hopefully, with my life experience I can provide some of the empathy and support she needs. Tash said she had found a great friend who has gone through life and can help me to do some things I don’t know how to do. Tash is doing a fabulous job! I’ve noticed that her self-esteem has increased heaps! I also like the way that she is so responsive to advice, responds readily to messages, and is chatty and respectful, Georgie said. 01.01.2022 Anne Wagner has been driving since she was 13 and has taught more than 20 people to drive over more than six decades. Anne, 78, has been a driver mentor with D...evonport Chaplaincy since 2014 and has the triple honour of being the most senior mentor, the equal longest serving, and the most successful. None of her students have failed to get their licence under her patient instruction. I learned to drive on the farm at Stowport when I was 13, she said. My twin brother was big enough to bale hay, so I helped out by driving the truck. It probably didn’t get out of first gear, but I had to steer and stop and start. The former art teacher at Leighland Christian School and WEC missionary in The Netherlands has helped teach her two children and five grandchildren to drive, as well as many friends and referrals through the Devonport Easy Ps driver mentoring program. I love being able to teach someone a new skill, she said. I love to see people get freedom, self-confidence and employment, all because they got their licence. I’ve mainly taught people who don’t have anyone to teach them or don’t have a vehicle to drive." Many of her students have been single mums, including her current student, Nicole Harding, (pictured) from Latrobe, who wants to get her licence to get a job in hospitality. Nicole has clocked up about 30 of the required 50 hours before she can take her licence test. Both Anne and Nicole agree that the informal discussion about life, work and family while out on the road are as important as the driving skills. I have one previous student with whom I have a strong relationship who still rings me as she doesn’t have much family support. Visit www.devonportchaplaincy.org.au to join Anne and many others as a driver mentor.
