20.01.2022 PLAYER PROFILE: CAMERON BUTCHER What school/s did you attend? I attended AIB College of Business in Iowa from 2013-2015 and then Marian University in Indianapolis from 2015-2018.... When did you first decide to move to the USA? Moving to the USA on a soccer scholarship first crossed my mind back in 2012 when I broke my tibia. Realizing the sport that I loved may not be my future forever, it was a great opportunity to start a new adventure in a new country and gain a degree whilst still playing at a very high level. What did you study? I was a sport and event management major at AIB, which then translated into a Business Management degree with a concentration in Sport Management at Marian. How did you find the quality of football compared to Australia? The quality of football in the USA was much more professional than in Australia. A lot of games are played on astro turf, so the pace of the game can be a little faster also. This helps your thought process and also your first touch in the game. You really have to be 100% focused 100% of the time. What was the biggest difference between football in Australia and football in college? The biggest difference here in the college environment was how professional everything was. From training twice a day, to getting on the team coach and staying in hotels for away games. Everything was regimented just like how it would be at a professional club. In preparing for a game we would watch video on our opponent and go over how we could break them down in different areas etc. we had a nutritionist, fitness coach, 5 Physios and amazing facilities. What advice would you give to a prospective student athlete? My advice would be to just go for it! Before making the move I was very apprehensive, but once I got here it was the best decision I have ever made. I have grown not only as an athlete but as an individual tremendously. 02.01.2022 SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT Bryce Deaton When did you first decide to move to the USA? It was a dream I had as a kid but I decided to make it a reality in 2014.... What school/s did you attend? Freshman year at AIB College in Iowa, then transferred to Central Baptist College in Arkansas. What did you study? A Bachelor in Kinesiology - Sports and Events Management. How was the quality of football in college compared to back home in Australia? A lot faster! I was playing with a pool of incredible talent that you were personally experiencing every day of the week. What was the biggest difference between between football in Australia and football in college? The fitness was intense! A huge training schedule made you the fittest you could be and improve your game like night and day! Where has your journey taken you now? After 4 seasons of playing, 1 season in the NPSL over there, 2 ACL reconstructions, I was lucky enough to be asked to be head goalkeeper coach/assistant mens and womens coach for a season. I now live back in Australia teaching football and wellbeing to indigenous children in western NSW with the John Moriarty Foundation. What advice would you give to a prospective student athlete? DO NOT HESITATE! If you are thinking about going to uni and love football, go abroad! Ill never forget my experience and the people I have met along the way. I had never been anywhere out of Australia, and I got to experience living in a whole new country. The BEST years of my life so far! Got questions for Bryce?
