13.01.2022 There has to be a reason why this tiny pansy is called Johnny Jump Up and today I found out why - here it was jumping up in the middle of this exquisite ground ...cover sedum ‘Angelina’ - extra special because that was my grandmother’s name. Easy to grow in good soil as long as you keep the weeds away - like clover - it doesn’t like competition - it likes to shine! As I explained to my 14 year old granddaughter the other day - this little random viola is also known as ‘heartsease’ and was included in a posy when someone was suffering from a broken heart. And who said gardening was boring - not me - always full of joy and fascinating new things to learn. See more

05.01.2022 A gentle plea for chaos?! Photo One: One of my garden fairies brought this kale leaf to me the other day, knowing exactly what it was and also knowing that it ...shouldn't stay there otherwise there would be no kale left! Photo Two: What is it? A bundle of eggs hatching from the CABBAGE WHITE BUTTERFLY - with the caterpillar stage doing all the damage - munch, munch, munch! Photo Three: This butterfly is small and white with two black spots and I have been getting hundreds in my garden lately - which tells me a a lot - that everyone is mass planting their brassicas (which is all the only family that this critter eats) and not mixing them up with plants from other families. Photo Four: Deception and confusion are the effective way to control this unwanted visitor - not mass planting of a single species - mix it up! Interplant your cabbages and kale between lots of flowers, strong smelling herbs and food plants from other families. Remember too that STRAIGHT LINES AND UNIFORMITY ARE FOR THE ARMY - nature doesn't work like that. Just take a look at the photo of the lovely unsprayed cabbage that my friend Cate has grown - not one munch hole. Why? Probably because it is surrounded by a circle of chard, spinach and silverbeet - different family to cabbage. Photo Five: Nature finds order in chaos. If you want to find out more - all of this, and more, is on my information sharing website - just look under Gardening or put any topic in the search box. https://growfoodslowfood.com//pest-controlcabbage-white-b/

04.01.2022 These fluttering little heartbeat visitors to my garden make my day - Red-browed Firetails and Double-barred Finches. I was so pleased when the appropriate feed...ing of these tiny birds was endorsed on a recent episode of ABC Gardening Australia - why, because much of the grasslands they feed on, and the low-growing shrubbery in which they live, has been destroyed.
