17.01.2022 Here are a few things to remember when caring for an ageing person who has dementia. 1. Don’t use the word REMEMBER, because a person who has early dementia will be upset when they CAN’T remember something and a person who has advanced dementia WON’T remember. 2. Don’t ASK A QUESTION make a STATEMENT....Continue reading

01.01.2022 There are many things we need to take into consideration when caring for an ageing person. The first thing that comes to mind is dehydration and how to help prevent it. Dehydration occurs when the bodily output of fluids is greater than the intake. Dehydration is caused by sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, low intake of fluid and, some medications { diuretics}. Other causes are people with dementia who forget to drink, people who aren't able to get a drink for themselves because of... mobility issues, people who are ill and people who have swallowing difficulties. Signs and symptoms of dehydration include dark coloured urine with decreased output. The colour of the urine is a good indicator of dehydration.Clear urine indicates good hydration and dark urine indicates dehydration.Other indicators are: 1.A dry mouth. 2.Thirst, 3.Dizziness. 4.Headache. 5.Lethargy. 6.Muscle weakness. Severe dehydration is characterized by : 1. Lack of sweating. 2. Very dry skin. 3.Low blood pressure. 4.Sunken eyes. 5. Fever. 6. Delerium. It is difficult at the best of times to get people to drink at least 1litre of fluids a day.the recommended amount is 2 litres. There are ways by which we can encourage ageing people to drink more fluids and at the same time make this a pleasureable experience. It is not necessary to drink all of the fluids, they can also eat their fluids by eating fruits and vegetables high in water contentsuch as: Oranges. Grapes, Mandarins. Pears. Watermelon. Tomatoes. Spinach. Broccoli. Brussels Sprouts. Apples. Cucumber. All of the above foods contain between 85% to 96% of water. Ice blocks and favourite cool drinks are also another way of encouraging fluid intake. Always make sure to leave a drink within reach to remind a person to drink and make sure that the cup or mug is easy to hold sometimes a cover may be useful and always make sure any warm drinks are not too hot and are in safe drinking vessels.Beakers with handles can be very useful and plastic mugs with handles on both sides make drinking independently much easier. I will talk some more about this in my next post. If you have any questions, please call me and I will be happy to assist you.

01.01.2022 Food, glorious food, well that is how most of us like to think about food, but for an ageing person, sometimes food is not something to be anticipated or enjoyed and I find this to be sad. Rather, it is viewed as something that must be eaten in order to survive. There are different factors that contribute to this problem. Some of these factors are: 1. Dementia. 2. Problems with teeth and dentures. ... 3. Poor eating habits. 4. Variety of foods available/offered. 5. Seating arrangements and mealtime atmosphere. 6. Does the person cook for him/herself? 7. If so, are they able to shop for themselves? 8. If no, do they have meals on wheels or another meal service. 9. Cutlery, are there special needs? e.g strokes, arthritic pain in hands. 10. Serving size and type of crockery used. 11. Family and others involved in meal preparation. 12. Fatigue. I will discuss these topics in my future posts as there are many different issues involved within each of the above mentioned items. My next post will be tomorrow and if anyone has a question please feel free to message or call me and I will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have.
