20.01.2022 "TALKING ABOUT SPEEDWAY SNIPPETS The Speedway Motorcycle Club of WA are hosting the Western Australian Flat Track Championship on Saturday evening, 28th Novem...ber at their purpose built 330m Pinjar Park Motorcycle Speedway circuit in Neerabup in Perth’s northern suburbs. The 'Bennco Group' sponsored State Flat Track Championship has attracted a huge amount of interest according to Tom Leisk who is assisting the Speedway Motorcycle Club organize the event. Tom said, we are aiming for 24 starters for this year’s championship. Nominations for the event have only just opened and already we have had ten confirmed starters. We are currently looking at a 24-rider format for the Championship and that’s our goal, he said. Nominations close on the 21st November and there is some good prize money on offer. Watch out for more news on this exciting event on the Speedway Motorcycle Club’s website and Facebook pages and keep reading Talking About Speedway for more updates as they come to hand. . Former WA Sidecar Star, Clayton Mills has recently welcomed his second grand daughter, ‘Madison’, into the family. The picture of Clayton with granddaughter, Madison below, tells the full story and I have no doubt that she will have him wrapped around her little finger in no time. He might have been tough on the track, but he’s a real softy at heart, Best Wishes to all. Talking about Clayton Mills, most people are aware, Clayton owns and sponsors the fabulous Mills Drainage #45 sidecar outfit raced by Jack Fewster and Steve McQueen. Clayton told Talking About Speedway that the recent and frustrating issues they have had with the bike at its last two outings are behind them after they sorted out some gremlins in the wiring loom and some gearing issues. Clayton said, Jack has had huge problems getting out of the gate; however, they should be right in the mix and very competitive right from the get-go at their next outing .. Gillman Speedway is hosting the Gillman Solo and Sidecar Championships this Saturday evening. The current WA solo Champion Dakota Ballantyne is among the starters for the 500cc title and is a good chance of completing the double, holding the WA and SA Gillman titles at the same time. He will have stiff opposition though from fellow SA solo stars, Fraser Bowes and Robert Medson. WA’s Connor Bailey, now living in NSW, will give the SA guys a good run for their money and I’m sure he will occupy a spot on the podium at nights end. Which step is anyone’s guess? Connor missed out on his UK season this year due to Covid 19, however he has been doing lots of laps and training hard and is raring to go. On the same program, Gillman Speedway will run the Sidecar Championship. Among the big field contesting the sidecar championship is Darwin based, Shane Melbourne who raced in Perth during last season. Ashley Jensen Batchelor and Harry Sadler will be competing in the 125cc Championship and appear to be strong contenders. Both riders competed with success in Perth at the National 125cc Australian Championships in January this year. Best wishes to all competitors from Talking About Speedway . COMING UP NEXT: Talking About Speedway will provide exclusive reports on two young and exciting Australian solo riders who are both making giant strides in Speedway racing. I speak of Brayden McGuinness who has been contracted to ride in Poland in 2021 and James Pearson, the former World #2, 80cc solo Champion who is in his final season of 250cc racing before stepping up to 500’s Watch out for these stories coming up soon. Graeme Sinden.

14.01.2022 SPEEDWAY SOLO CHAMPIONSHIPS. WHAT IS THE BEST FORMAT FOR DETERMINING THE ULTIMATE WINNER? In the tough world of Speedway Solo racing where riders put themselv...es on the line for individual glory in local, national or international Championships, deciding how a winner is crowned is not necessarily as straight forward as it may seem. WHAT? I hear you ask! In recent years many Championships around the world have adopted the World Speedway Grand Prix system. In this competition, a field of 16 riders, plus two reserves compete over 20 heats to determine the top eight competitors. (5 heats of 4 riders) 3 points awarded to the winner, 2 points for second and 1 point for the third placed competitor. The highest eight-point scorers after 20 heats then compete in two semi-finals. Riders finishing 1st, 4th, 6th and 7th compete in semi-final 1 and riders placed 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 8th compete in semi-final 2, with the first and second placed riders from each semi-final advancing to the final. First over the line in the final is crowned the ultimate winner. Well thats fair, I hear you say. In the new 2020 SGP World Championship series, the format above will still determine the winner of each Grand Prix in the series, but from then on points earned in heats are worthless. (Notwithstanding the Covid 19 pandemic which has absolutely turned speedway on its head for season 2020/21) The difference in this years World Championship is the winner of each Grand Prix receives 20 points, 2nd place 18 points, 3rd place 16 points, 4th place 14 points and 5th place 12 points. In the top 5 placings points are reduced by 2 for each lower place. Beyond 5th place points are reduced by 1 for the remainder of the 16-man field meaning the last placed rider (16th) receives 1 point and these are the points each rider will take forward. Unlike previous World Solo Speedway Grand Prix series, it now becomes imperative that riders win GPs, rather than accumulating points for each ride in a Grand Prix and carrying forward accumulated points for each subsequent GP as was the case in the 2019 Championship format. It was possible for a rider to win the World Championship, without winning a single GP. (I understand Mark Loran achieved this in his World Championship Title in 2000) Of course, there is a lengthy and hectic process to determine and select the 16 riders for the SGP World Championship in the first place, but for the moment well put this aside. Now what if it was a single meeting Championship, lets say an under twenty-one, State Championship in Australia? Notwithstanding the selection criteria and process to determine the field, 16 riders will front the starter to compete over 20 heats to hopefully secure enough points to reach the semi-finals and advance to the final. Keep in mind a rider in a single meeting format has only one chance at success. A mix up at the start gate, a broken chain or a fall in semi-final one, leaves him stranded and out of the event. He may well have been the best and fastest rider on the night. His five heat wins and 15 point maximum is all for nothing, he goes home empty handed, his name will not appear in the record books for that event and that year. I put this scenario forward to promote and stimulate thoughts and comments. What if the single event, single meeting Championship format described above was determined by points alone. What if each rider had 5 heats in which to accumulate the highest number of points to decide the Championship? The rider above who won every heat and scored a maximum 15 points would have won the Championship. Clearly, he would have been the best rider on the night and gone into the history books as the under 21 State Champion for that year. More importantly the Under 21 State Championship win may well have further ramifications, such as being the criteria for automatic selection into the Australian Championship and ultimately a World Title event! The same rider, same event where one format sees him a loser and the other a Champion!!!!!! Im on record as saying in commentary and in the written word that, to finish first, first you have to finish I accept its the same for all riders and luck is a fortune in some instances. Riders enter an event and accept the consequences. Sometimes it works for you and other times you could give the sport away. In many ways I like the SGP Championship format, the build-up through the heats, who is going to make the top eight, which riders will go through to the final following the two semis and who will ultimately win the final and be crowned Champion. I suspect its for this reason that promoters have shifted away from a point only system. I spoke to good friend and former Western Australian Solo Champion Dave Cheshire. (the youngest rider to win a senior WA State Title) and asked for his thoughts on this issue. Dave said, like you I agree that for non-Championship single meeting events such as The King of Pinjar or even the Rob Woffinden Classic here in Western Australia, the SGP Championship format works fine, its great. These races present sponsors with good value for money and the fans love it, theres great excitement. For me though, when guys are racing for State or National Titles that are recorded in history and are used as steppingstones for riders to gain entry to overseas Teams, International and World Championships etc, the point accumulation system is the way forward, he said. Dave went on, If a Championship is decided over several rounds, like the Australian Championship, for example, it changes things up a little. If you have a bad night, a DNF, broken a chain or crash, a rider can bounce back and get into the points. A rider may not win each round, but has enough points to win the title, even if each round is run on heats and final Championship format. Former Australian International, Steve (Johno) Johnston agrees with Dave Cheshire. Johno said, Ive raced all over the World at the highest level in both formats and some work for you and some dont, its a bitter pill to swallow when bad luck comes your way. State or National Titles would be better if they were run on a point only basis if they are single round events. As Dave said, by winning these events it can make a difference to a guys career. At least with a point only system for these single round Championship events, even if you DNF or put in a bad ride during a heat youre still in the hunt and not excluded from the event he said. Ironically, Steve Johnston raced in the recent 2019/20 Western Australian Solo Championship at Pinjar Park in Perth. Johno was the Australian Team Manager when the Aussies raced Great Britain in two unofficial Test Matches or International Friendlies. Good friend and triple World Champion, Jason Crump, raced for Australia and stayed at Johnos house during his stay in Perth. Crumpy suggested to Johno that he should get his solo out and have a bit of fun and as it turned out the only meeting that he could fit in with his work schedule was the WA State Championship event. It was during the WA State Solo Championship event that NSW rider, Kane Lawrence rode solidly to record 5 heat wins on the trot. He was on fire and looked every bit a winner despite having a classy field to beat, including West Aussies, Steve Johnston, Matt Marson, Dan Winchester, Blake Russell, plus Bowes and Ballantyne out of SA. The Championship was eventually won by brilliant South Australian rider Dakota Ballantyne, after the hapless Lawrence was caught out on a contentious start line infringement out of gate one during the first semi and unfortunately, he played no further part in the meeting. Clearly, he was devastated after showing the huge crowd in attendance that he had the package to win. WHAT IS IT I ALWAYS SAY? --------- To finish first, first you have to finish This in no way reflects on the fine win by the plucky Dakota Ballantyne. He thoroughly deserved the title win, but you cant help but feel for the brilliant New South Welshman who would, with a different, points only format, be basking in the glory of a WA State Title win. Back to the SGP World Championship, time will tell how the new format will play out. Triple World Solo Champion, Tai Woffinden, told me in a recent interview that he is unsure of the benefits of the new format, but like a true Champion and a brilliant tactician, he has used it as a positive and set himself a goal of winning another (several) World Championships in the new format. I believe we will have to wait until Covid 19 is behind us and the Speedway World gets back to some normality before we will see the results of the new points scoring system where riders focus will shift to wining GPs rather than simply amassing points. Points earned from heats and finals etc will be worthless and not accumulated after each GP. The emphasis will be to earn points from placings in each Grand Prix. Motorcycle Speedway like most sports these days must keep up with consumer expectations and provide maximum entertainment to spectators going through the turnstiles. While we in Speedway may argue one way or the other, on whether of not its in the riders best interest or should we continue to do things just because thats the way weve always done them, doesnt matter. In the end, its all about ensuring the sport remains relevant to our fans and sponsors and doing whats in their best interest. Story: Graeme Sinden.
