The research shows that exercising in the sand compared to a hard surface,... increases the intensity of the workout uses more muscle groups in the lower limbs requires an increase in range of motion in the joints and muscles may increase strength and flexibility Research also shows that there are some associated injury risks to be aware of if you have Achilles, knee or ankle limitations. Risks of impact injuries from falls are less - that makes sense. Who doesn't love a good roll in the sand! So what is the answer? - for HIKING, the benefits of training on an uneven surface like sand are significant but a cautionary approach is wise...and who doesn't love a beachside training session! Start with short sessions, a light pack, moderate-intensity and observe the effects on your body post-training. 21.01.2022 Trekking in the wilderness has its fair share of rain and dark moments! Are you a glass-half-full or a glass-half-empty kinda person? We don't try to avoid these moments but instead, we aim to always stay positive in these situations. Yes...GLASS-HALF-FULL! This helps us to be more productive in solving problems, reduce stress and to better able to work through challenging moments.... Here are some tips on how to BE MORE POSITIVE! IDENTIFY your key areas to change - ask yourself which situations you usually think negatively about, whether it is when the weather is cold, you are near a cliff edge or when you are rock scrambling. Start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way. STOP yourself - regularly stop and evaluate what you're thinking. If you find that your thoughts are mainly negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them. SMILE - Give yourself permission to smile or laugh, especially during difficult times. Seek humour in everyday happenings. SURROUND yourself with positive people. Make sure those in your life are positive, supportive people you can depend on to give helpful advice and feedback. Protein Balls are my favourite snack. Eat something healthy before you go out to that Christmas event so you don't go feeling hungry and dive straight into handfuls of nuts and pretzels. DIAMOND TIP 6 All Things in Moderation - including the booze - alternate your drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) with a glass of sparkling water. When faced with the tasty looking Christmas party spread - ENJOY! and try a bit of everything, but keep the sample sizes small and avoid going back for seconds. Portion control on those desserts too folks! 08.01.2022 Our amazing Diamonds South Coast Track team is back in Hobart after an incredible 9 days trekking in the Tasmanian wilderness. One of the hardest treks in Australia...masses of deep mud, punishing ascents, the longest most gnarly rainforest descent ever, 18kg packs on our backs, up to 14hour days of walking, countless river crossings...it challenged us all but we rose to every challenge and explored this most beautiful remote and unique part of the world. 08.01.2022 Why is it called the 6 Foot Track? Diamonds have set a goal to hike and camp the 45km Six Foot Track from Jenolan Caves to Katoomba in March 2021. 3 days hiking and 2-nights camping. In the late 1800s this track was established to allow easy access through the area and the "Six Foot" represents the width of the track that was built to allow horses and coaches to travel it.... Did you know that there is an annual Six Foot Track Marathon Event that began in 1984 with just 7 runners? Now it is a popular event amongst trail runners and the fastest female does the entire length in under 4 hours. Winding through state forests and Blue Mountains National Park, this historic track takes in heritage sites, heath, woodlands, and rainforest. Crossing a unique swing bridge is an exhilarating experience and the cascading waterfalls, wild rivers and remote campsites are all part of the fun.
