23.01.2022 www.divingwawrecks.com/lonely-sailors-graves Forgotten Pearling graves in the Far North of WA: The Edeline Islands are located in Strickland Bay in the Buccanee...r Archipelago, adjacent to an area charted as Graveyards. Located on one of the beaches is a number of late nineteenth century pearlers' graves of which there is no historical record. We know almost nothing about the owners of the grave sites, their origins or their demise but still an interesting story can be found, mainly from the time in history that they lived in this part of the world. There is around 6 graves that can be located on the beach, two have inscriptions and give the only clues to their origin, the two are marked with the names Fritto and Jullo and are dated 1891 and 1889 respectively, Fritto’s and one unnamed grave is marked with a Christian cross, Fritto’s is also marked diver and isolated from the others, it is located under a fig tree and faces the setting sun. The pearling industry in Western Australia was first established in the early 1850’s further south in the areas around Shark Bay and Cossack in generally shallow bays with the first shells collected being Pinctada Albina. It wasn’t until 1861 when the Pinctada Maxima shell was discovered in the waters around 80 mile beach and Roebuck Bay that pearling grounds gradually moved north. During these times from the 1850’s to the early 1880’s, the early days of pearling the industry had a very dark chapter. Lugger captains would use forced labour on the local indigenous populations, chaining and enslaving Aborigines and forcing them to skin dive to collect shell. Initially the collection of shell started on the beaches and in the shallows until stocks were exhausted and the skindivers were forced to dive deeper and for longer to collect shell. Divers would be forced to dive for shell with little to no breaks, with no googles or any form of assistance to the point of exhaustion. They were required to dive to depths up to 40ft, if they couldn’t find shell they were required to bring back a handful of sand or a stone to indicate they were searching the bottom otherwise a violent and brutal punishment would be administered. Children, women and particularly pregnant women were the preference for their abilities to hold their breath longer and were more productive divers. When skindivers had been worked to the point of exhaustion or near death they were normally marooned onshore far from their tribal lands and many that could no longer work would suspiciously vanish from the decks in the middle of the night. These years in the 1880’s are where the graves come into the story. As hardhat diving came into play, the area around Roebuck Bay exploded with luggers and activity and workers and lugger crews arrived from all around Asia. Broome was gazetted as a town in 1883 much to the disgust of the then Governor of Western Australia, Sir Frederick Napier Broome who was the town's namesake. However, he wanted nothing to do with the disgusting shambolic town of canvas tents and foreign labourers, opium dens and brothels. By the 1900’s it was the Mother of Pearl capital of the world supplying the majority of the worlds pearl shell used to produce buttons, jewellery and ornamental products. As the pearling fleet grew, divers and crews flocked to the coast from all around Asia. The majority of Asiatics included Chinese, Japanese, Malays, Filipinos, Manilamen and crews from Java. The Japanese and Chinese quickly took hold of the industry with the majority of divers of Japanese decent, who forcefully held control of the technology and skillset of the trade. Despite this background, survival rates of divers were horrifically low, it was estimated that 30% of all hardhat divers in the early days would not survive their first dive, with little practical training the first dive was literally sink or swim and if they were to survive throughout their short careers they faced the constant threats of the then little known decompression sickness, sharks, crocodiles, deadly currents and jealous and vindictive tenders and crewmates sabotaging air supplies. Besides a few clues, all we can really tell from the graves themselves is very little. It’s interesting that Fritto is the only grave marked as Diver and he is located separate from the other graves, perhaps the others were crew? But there is no way of knowing. The majority, but not all hardhat divers were Japanese, Fritto could have been of another nationality? His grave and that of another are marked with a Christian cross, however, Christianity was very much a minority in Asia at the time, with most Japanese being Buddhist. The headstones are also written in English, perhaps the inscription was the religious beliefs of an English captain or crew. Also it seems to have little relevance or importance to any of the graves on the Edeline Islands but historically, when possible, Christian graves were usually buried facing the rising sun, Fritto faces the setting sun and the others are scattered somewhat. The unique history of pearling is where the interest lays in these graves, these men of unknown origin are a modern day link to those times back in the 1880’s. Whoever they were, to imagine they would have come from around the world, not really knowing their destination to a frontier town cut off from the rest of the world and the state’s own Government that saw them more as an invasion then a workforce. They would have experienced the hardships of a wild, remote and virtually lawless place of isolation. Also, they would have arrived on the West Coast not knowing what lay before them or their ultimate fate, that they would die on this wild coast and remain for almost a century undiscovered and forever be removed from civilisation, buried beneath the ground on the Edeline Islands and very far from their families who may have never known their demise and away from their homelands, wherever they would have been. 22.01.2022 Clean-ups by Ocean D Ramsey and @Juan Oliphant at Ocean Ramsey Water Inspired with cressi.com clean-up tolls. "Wow, the timing, I am so glad we were there this... morning to save this turtle and help prevent more entanglement. @juansharks grew up saving hundreds of sea turtles, this one was floating right at the shoreline after our sea life-saving swim to rid the reef of exactly what caused this. Remember small scale fishing is not the enemy, we want to help local fishermen and marine life by offsetting the impact which is better for everyone. More info at Savetheseaturtlesinternational.com Photo by @juansharks **Disclaimer** Please dont attempt this on your own, sea turtles are a federally protected species but if its caught in a net/line impending death please attempt to free it without touching it if possible. Cutting fishing lines off the reef and wild animals should be done with care. Cut, dont pull the line so as not to damage the reef, also becoming entangled yourself is likely in surge and a lot of lines, always dive with an attentive buddy who also has a knife ready. Use gloves and dont touch the reef if you can." See more

20.01.2022 My first Red-winged Parrot! I was swatting the flies away from the bacon as we were cooking breakkie at Stanley and I saw this magnificent ball of colour hurtli...ng through the air. I almost knocked Dave's egg out of his hand while swatting and open mouth gapping at this flurry of colour then grabbed my camera and took off after it. I thought I had lost it in the trees and went to turn back to the Troopy but figured I had come this far, better check - just in case! Low and behold, there's TWO! I managed a few snaps in that tree til one flew one way and the other flew to a tree closer to camp. I managed to get a lot closer to the tree than I thought the bird would allow and I managed to capture it having a breakfast of its own. What a spectacular bird! We also have the Crested Pigeon which is kind of a goofy looking bird and does a cool dance where it spreads its tail feathers and dips its head almost pecking the ground and bounces with a "woo woo woo". Very pretty metallic colouring on the wings. The final bird I haven't managed to ID yet, can anybody get me up to speed? See more

17.01.2022 The loss of "Old Nick" a Royal Australian Air Force, Consolidated B-24L Liberator (AN 72-80) Lost in Vansittart Bay with all her crew on 23 March 1945. Recently... located during a seafloor mapping, the site has still yet to be dived and lays in the very remote north Kimberley not far from the Kalumburu community. Piloted by Squadron Leader N. H. Strauss, Old Nick took off from Truscott airfield as the lead plane on a shipping sweep over the Timor Sea during the early morning of the 23rd. For reasons unknown the B-24 was unable to gain altitude and circled around at full throttle back to Truscott however, at the low altitude Sqn Ldr Strauss was unable to locate the field. As the Old Nick was observed clearing the land towards the ocean, Strauss was heard over the radio relaying his intentions to his crewmen that they would ditch in the ocean. Old Nick was seen ditching at a steep angle of descent, apparently nose down and burst into flames on contact with the waves. Unfortunately with a total loss of life. The all Australian crew are pictured below in front of "Old Nick". Fanny Straus, H.J. 15.01.2022 "A malay shot another in the back with a shotgun and then stabbed himself to death" 28 April 1902 p3 Geraldton Advertiser: Dotted around the shores of Western A...ustralia in some of the most remote and forgotten parts of our coast lay the graves of lost sailors dating back beyond Western Australia's colonisation. We've just made a section on the website for Lonely Sailors Graves in Northern Western Australia. www.divingwawrecks.com/lonely-sailors-graves Our rich maritime history in this state encompasses mariners from all around the globe, some of who were laid to rest on one of the most isolated coastlines in the world. Many are long forgotten and many are still to be found. From both American and Norwegian whalers, to drowned Japanese pearl divers and Indonesian fisherman, murdered Manilamen and Royal Navy sailors who succumbed to the harsh North West. Many are forever in an unfamiliar land, unknown to their families and virtually unknown to history. Only their fellow sailors now long gone will ever know the identities to many of these headstones that dot the WA coast. Over the next month We'll post about some of the sites listed on the website and try to provide a little more history and context to these long forgotten sailors and the lives they likely lived.

11.01.2022 We've just updated the webpage to include two new wrecks visited through our northern travels this year. www.divingwawrecks.com/eddystone The Eddystone was a la...rge steamship freighter that ran aground in the remnote Pilbara while being lead into the Balla Balla anchorage by the Beagle on the 6th September 1894. In the morning of the 6th the Eddystone was following the Beagle into the passage while continuously sounding with the ships lead and the engines at dead slow, only just making headway on an out going tide. The Beagle was ahead of the freighter and some confusion grew with regard to signals being made between the two vessels, when just before 8am the Eddystone went aground on a the shoal at the eastern edge of the passage. The site although extremely tidal with strong current and low vis, is quite dramatic and with the fast water on the site it has huge schools of giant trevally and barracuda surrounding the structures that remain. Large portions of the wreck are not present however the huge triple expansion engine, large boilers, stern and propeller make the site impressive. Amazingly the stern and engine lay almost 90 to each other showing the power of the tides and ocean while the wreck was breaking apart.

11.01.2022 !! Stubby holders have arrived !! There are 4 designs available featuring the unique WA coastline. Grab yours before summer hits to keep your beverages nice and... cool! They are Australian made from premium 5mm rubber with a base, double stitched seam and overlocking top and bottom. Starting in the Perth metro area we have a school of Bullseyes at Stragglers wreck off Fremantle. (Unidentified Stragglers Dredge No. 2 lost in 1936). These shiny fish form large schools and like to hide in dark corners of shipwrecks. Their large eyes are adapted for night time use to locate relatively small planktonic prey. Tracking north next we have Where the Desert Meets the Sea An aerial shot of Francois Peron, Shark Bay. Once a remote pastoral station Francois Peron is now a national park where the rust-red dirt meets the white beach sand and azure blue ocean. Continuing up the coast, next is a Chromodoris nudibranch (noo-de-brangk) at the Muiron Islands, Exmouth. Whilst Nudibranchs range in size from 1 mm to 600 mm most fall within the range of 3 mm to 200 mm and their lifespan varies from several weeks up to a year which means the number of eggs they lay is essential. Although hermaphrodites, nudibranchs still require a mate to produce eggs. Once the exchange is made, the two nudibranchs both go their separate ways and lay 1-6 egg masses in spirals with some containing up to a million eggs! Coming to a finish with a sunset at Hunter River in the Kimberley Region. This river was named by famous explorer Phillip Parker King in 1820 after the ship’s surgeon, James Hunter. This 30km long river is said to have the highest proportion of saltwater crocodiles of any other river in the Kimberley. Pricing is one for $12 or multi buy deal 2 for $20! (3 for $30, 4 for $40) I’ve been down to Australia Post today and I’ll level with you, postage is exxy. Whether it’s one or four items postage will be $10 but it is also tracked for peace of mind. If you’re keen to purchase hit me up and I’ll get them to you as soon as possible!

08.01.2022 Cressi COMFORT is the right wetsuit for divers who particularly appreciate the ease of fit and comfort. In addition, the high elasticity of the whole improves t...he water tightness and reduces the circulation of water. The outer coating is 100% Ultraspan superelastic, quick-drying, and more hydrodynamic, and the X-Plush coating in the inner area, quick-drying and sliding, which facilitates the fit of the wetsuit. It is very pleasant and thermal and does not limit the original elasticity of the neoprene and outer fabric. www.cressi.com

01.01.2022 Diving on the Benan shipwreck. 75 metres in length and 1415 ton in weight, the Benan struck reef off Point Cloates in 1888. Amazing how clean this wreck is and it makes it easy to identify what's what. The amount of fish life on here was phenomenal!
