24.01.2022 This #16daysofactivism2020

23.01.2022 RESPOND with passion, but our women must lead ... Check out today’s message delivered by Mutthi Mutthi Wemba Wamba woman, Vicki Clark. When you are working with and supporting Aboriginal women and children, don’t let your passion drift towards control. Aboriginal women must always lead the response!!!! #16days #16DaysOfActivism #16DaysOfActivism2020 #endviolence #OrangeTheWorld #Djirra #selfdetermination #SharingStoriesFindingSolutions #OurVoiceOurVisbility #CulturalStrength #WomensBusiness #AboriginalWomensLivesMatter #DontSilenceTheViolence #StandingFirmAgainstFamilyViolence

22.01.2022 RESPOND by backing our self determination! WE HAVE THE SOLUTIONS to the issues affecting our people! ... COVID-19 has brought at least a few positive changes that taught us many things: 1 During COVID-19 we’ve seen the incarceration rates of Aboriginal women drop. We need government departments and agencies to shift their thinking. Aboriginal women don’t belong in prison. Many go to prison and sit on remand for long periods of time. After sitting on remand, many don’t get a custodial sentence when they finally go back to court for sentencing. There’s an opportunity here to not go back to pre-COVID rates of Aboriginal women in prison. This pandemic has shown you what we have always known that ABORIGINAL WOMEN DON’T BELONG IN PRISON. 2 It’s taken a pandemic for the government to temporarily change the child protection legislation in relation to permanency of care, something Djirra has been advocating for for years. In September 2020 the Government announced a temporary 6 months extension of the reunification timeline. The 6 months extension is not long enough to counteract the impacts of COVID-19, given that service reduction and delays in court hearings have already affected families for six months and are likely to continue to do so for some time yet. We are aware that the State Government is preparing a further package of legislative amendments in addition to the recently passed Omnibus Bill, hence there will be a forthcoming opportunity to amend the 2005 Children, Youth and Families Act (CYFA). As part of the second phase of legislative amendment, we ask that the State Government amend the CYFA to extend the timeframes of all current family reunification orders by a minimum of six month and that Child Protection practice guidance offer all affected parents an opportunity to seek an additional extension beyond this. The temporary COVID-19 changes must be made permanent. The pandemic has shown what Djirra always knew - things don’t have to stay the same. Laws can be changed to prevent the systemic racism targeting our people so that our kids can stay with their families. #16days #16DaysOfActivism #16DaysOfActivism2020 #WAFV2020 #orangetheworld #supportsurvivors #endviolence #WhyWeWalk #OrangeTheWorld #Djirra #SharingStoriesFindingSolutions #OurVoiceOurVisbility #CulturalStrength #WomensBusiness #SistersStandStrong #KooriWomensPlace #SistersDayOut #DeadlyDuos #IAmNotTheProblem #WeHaveTheSolutions #AboriginalWomensLivesMatter #DontSilenceTheViolence

21.01.2022 PREVENT violence against Aboriginal women and children!!! Aboriginal women’s experiences are very different from other women’s experiences. First nations women, our land was taken, our children ripped from our arms. Our trauma is ongoing. ... We live in a society where every day we experience two layers of inequality, one being a woman, the other being blak. There must be Aboriginal controlled responses to the needs of our women and children. Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations have the solutions to prevent violence against our women and children. It’s going to take solutions from our women, our men, our families, our communities, to prevent the high rates of violence against our women and children. And it’s also going to take commitment and investment from governments and white people. Let’s work together and create self-determined change. #16days #16DaysOfActivism #16DaysOfActivism2020 #WAFV2020 #orangetheworld #supportsurvivors #endviolence #WhyWeWalk #OrangeTheWorld #Djirra #SharingStoriesFindingSolutions #OurVoiceOurVisbility #CulturalStrength #WomensBusiness #SistersStandStrong #KooriWomensPlace #SistersDayOut #DeadlyDuos #IAmNotTheProblem #WeHaveTheSolutions #AboriginalWomensLivesMatter #DontSilenceTheViolence

16.01.2022 Some of you may have heard of the Victorian Government’s Victorian Honour Roll Program. In case you haven’t .. The Program celebrates the outstanding contributions made by women from all walks of life and acknowledges the many ways in which they have made a lasting impact to our state. Each year, the Victorian Honour Roll of Women recognises women who have demonstrated remarkable leadership and excellence in their field of expertise, interest, endeavour, or through their co...mmitment to the community. Since 2001, over 600 women have been recognised for their incredible efforts in Victoria, Australia and beyond. Women are recognised for their achievements in a broad range of fields, including science, arts, environment, law, social justice, family violence prevention, research, health, media and education. They each represent the courage and determination of women across Victoria using their unique skills, experiences and insights to forge a brighter path for all women. There were 32 inductees to the Honour Roll this year and our deadly CEO Antoinette Braybrook is one of those inductees. Antoinette was recognised for her dedication and commitment to ensuring that our Aboriginal women’s voices are not silenced and for her significant work to support Aboriginal women and children escaping family violence. Other significant Aboriginal women inducted this year are: Aunty Lois Peeler Aunty Fay Stewart-Muir Karen Heap Gina Bundle Sharon Paten, and Dr Misty Jenkins. I’m sure you will join with me in congratulating all the 2020 Inductees (but particularly our deadly Sista’s).

08.01.2022 This year’s Victorian State Budget neglects Aboriginal people’s legal needs and fails to deliver for Aboriginal women experiencing family violence. Despite the challenges that the pandemic has presented us, Djirra is continuing to deliver much needed culturally safe services and support. Across our legal and early intervention and support programs we are seeing a rise in demand for our service. Now more than ever, new and increased funding for our services is vital. The Gove...rnment is more than aware that investing in organisations like Djirra is the only way forward if we are serious about ending violence against Aboriginal women but has instead chosen to prioritise Victoria Police, Corrections and Youth Justice the systems that target our people. The lack of new investment in Djirra is devastating. 01.01.2022 Aboriginal women working for Aboriginal women are the experts. Our responses come from a lived experience of thousands and thousands of years - not from the off the shelf palette of white systems. The history and methodology of colonisation has always positioned knowledge and expertise within white systems and the white specialists who maintain them.... Value and respect Aboriginal women.
