25.01.2022 DESERT PAINTERS OF AUSTRALIA: Two Generations 24 September - 7 November 2020. 23.01.2022 We are passionate about Australian Indigenous Art and cultureand recognise the important role the visual arts play in the preservation of the oldest surviving culture in the world. We also believe in inclusivity and taking positive steps to create practical change. As a business, we want to make a significant impact and create a real and long-lasting shift in the way the Australian Indigenous Art industry operates.... Stay tuned for some exciting news we'll share soon... This painting, by the queen of Australian Indigenous Art, Emily Kame Kngwarreye was part of the Emily exhibition in New York in March 2020. It’s hard to believe it’s almost a year ago we had to depart the city early due to the pandemic. 23.01.2022 Walangkura Napanangka’s dedication to her country and family is captured in her singular vision, making her one of the most captivating of the Papunya Tula women. The devotion between Walangkura and her husband Uta Uta Tjangala is a tender legacy weaving through the history of Papunya Tula Artists. Married to one of the most influential and innovative of the original company shareholders, she was surrounded by dynamic art-making during the early days at Papunya. Yet, it was o...nly towards the end of the 1990s, almost a decade after her husband's death, when Walangkura finally began painting in her own right and joined the spirited female artists at the core of the Papunya Tula women painters. ‘Untitled - Tjukurla, 2006’ - a NATSIAA finalist - depicts the various movements of the ancestral women who travelled across the length of her birth country, a lake site in Western Australia near where the community of Tjukurla now stands. Although Uta Uta's influence can be sensed through the same fiery palette and fearless composition, Walangkura maps out the spiritual and geographical landscape in a way that feels distinctly feminine. Radiating strength and maternal warmth, her loose application of dots nestles around the forms and flow across the canvas with rhythmic vitality. This work is available for Private Sale, if you’d like to know more - get in touch. . . . #walangkuranapanangka #papunyatula #australianindigenousart #australianindigenousartist #australianart #contemporaryart

17.01.2022 The Hermannsburg watercolours, lead by Albert Namatjira’s vision, laid the foundations for the birth of the movement at Papunya, the shifting of gender frames by influential women painters, the conceptual framing that emerged in places like Balgo and finally the abstraction practised by contemporary masters. Our current Viewing Room exhibition, FRAMING THE LANDSCAPE, takes a closer look at each of these movements and the act of showing in Desert Art. 16.01.2022 This glorious painting by Emily Kame Kngwarreye is one of our favourites from the outstanding Kelton Collection. 'Named as one of the 20 most influential artists of the year - in the company of Jeff Koons, Yayo Kasuma, and KAWS - in 2019, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, almost 25 years after her death, is regarded not only as relevant to Australian art but also significant on a global scale. As an elderly, indigenous Australian woman who rarely left the boundaries of her ancestral co...untry in the arid Western Desert, Emily was ultimately anti-cosmopolitan. Indifferent to Western art traditions and political and social issues, she stands outside the modern framing of contemporary art critiques...Emily endures as an influential artist because her paintings strike an emotional and visceral chord in the viewer before we impose any conscious or rational interpretations on our witnessing. In this affective experience of her works, we share directly the sensuous and sentient landscape of her country. We sense, rather than know, Emily’s reverence for ceremony, her profundity in old age and her intimate relationship with the land.' - extract from Emily: Intimacy and Resonance, an essay by Vanessa Merlino - EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE circa 1910-1996 My Dreaming - Awelya 1992 synthetic polymer paint on linen bears Delmore cat. no. 92K64 verso 139 x 304.5 cm (55 x 120 in) Sold by D’Lan Contemporary as part of The Kelton Collection acquisition. #dlancontemporary #emilykamekngwarreye #australianindigenousart #contemporaryart #desert #country #dreaming
16.01.2022 After an extraordinary start to the year, and after witnessing some incredible innovations from the art world to take the experience of viewing artworks and exhibitions online, we think it's time to open the doors and present a physical exhibition once again. We've curated a special collection of paintings around the idea that the understanding of Indigenous art, as a contemporary art movement, never ends. With every iteration, every exhibition context, masterworks such as... those presented in this forthcoming exhibition, re-emerge to be in dialogue with contemporary events, perpetually renewing their meaning in time and place and giving us new insights into the world. The exhibition will be in Sydney from 17-26 September 2020. The catalogue will be released on 1 September and as always we welcome our Sydney-based clients who wish to receive a hard copy in the mail, to please forward your postal address to [email protected] In the meantime we look forward to seeing you in September. . . . . #josephjurra #australianindigenousart #australianindigenousartist #australianart #contemporaryart #artexhibition #sydneyart #sydneyartexhibition
14.01.2022 Deep in the south-central region of the Great Sandy Desert lies the rockhole of Kuntumarrajarra, the birthplace of Paji Honeychild Yankar and the heart of her country. 10.01.2022 At the inception of the Indigenous art movement, Albert Namatjira adopted the method of framing his compositions by holding his squared-off index fingers and thumbs in front of his eyes, reminding us that art is an eternal process of framing and selection. The tension between revelation and concealment is essentially the fire that ignites Indigenous Australian art. Opening in June, our first online Viewing Room exhibition - FRAMING THE LANDSCAPE - presents a selection of wor...ks that sharpen our understanding of the metaphorical framing of landscape in Indigenous art. 08.01.2022 Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri, c.1929-84,Untitled - Euro Dreaming Ceremony1972, provides a remarkable glimpse into the early history of Indigenous art. 06.01.2022 Our latest major consignment for private sale: Patrick Tjungurrayi’s ‘Untitled, 2008’. In his youth, Patrick spent many years traversing the breadth of his country in solitude. Driven by the hope of reuniting with his family, his travels imparted a profound understanding of the Western Desert and interpretation of the Tjukurrpa. In his later years, living and painting at Kiwirrkurra, Patrick's definitive knowledge of the land and his unparalleled authority in the maintenance... of ceremony and law were depicted in a relatively small series of paintings. In 2008, his contribution to Western Desert painting was acknowledged at the inaugural Western Australian Art Awards where he unanimously won the major prize. Untitled, 2008 depicts body painting designs associated with the lake site of Ngarru, west of Jupiter Well in Western Australia and is archetypal of Patrick's oeuvre. Radiating with warmth from his desert home and a deep love of the country that made him, it is a record of knowledge, landscape and ideas. Patrick's identification with both Balgo and Kiwirrkurra contribute to the colour palette and structure of his paintings, and the country that stretches between them is represented with unique stylistic integrity. 03.01.2022 Wingu Tingima was born south of Irrunytju in Western Australia near Kuru Ala, an important and sacred cave site of the Kungkarrakalpa Tjukurpa The Seven Sisters Story. The Sisters travelled a vast distance across the Western Desert, chased and watched by a lustful older man, Nyiru who wanted to take one of the young women as a wife. . It is an epic narrative of pursuit, voyeurism, obsession and sex told to generations of young women; also a cautionary tale whose only salvat...ion from the destruction of dangerous desire lies in the ability to be canny, remain in solidarity, and trust in the family bond. . The site of Kuru Ala holds special and emotional significance for women of the Ngaanyatjarra and Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. The vast lore of the Seven Sisters captured in the Pleiades constellation in the southern night sky has a physical presence in places such as this. . Drawing from a network of ancestral imagery, Wingu evokes and alludes to the typology found in rock art, sand drawings and body design rather than explicitly depicting her country. A senior custodian of its stories, Wingu stayed strongly associated with her birth site and maintained a deep affinity with Kuru Ala and Kungkarrakalpa throughout her acclaimed practice. . WINGU TINGIMA, circa 1920-2010 Kungkarrakalpa Tjukurpa 2009 synthetic polymer paint on linen 109 x 196.5 cm . This artwork is available for private sale. 02.01.2022 Our next major consignment available for private sale is this sublime work by Willy Tjungurrayi, ‘Untitled - Kaakuratintja 2002’. Willy Tjungurrayi started painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1976 whilst living at Papunya. His initial painting style emerged with a typical Western Desert iconography, finely dotted interconnecting grids of roundels which masterfully tracked the vast Tingari travels across Country. However, in 2000 Willy made a shift towards the minimalistic fo...rms that were collectively transforming the men’s painting practices at the time. ‘Untitled Kaakuratintja’ painted in 2002 is a jewel plucked at this creative peak. With his first solo shows hedged either side of its production; at William Mora Galleries in 2000 and Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in 2002, the artist’s subtle and palpable imprint of ancestral travels placed this particular painting as a finalist at the 19th Telstra NATSIAA Awards. It was this new linear approach which elevated Willy Tjungurrayi’s authority to one of the most senior Pintupi painters of the time.
