25.01.2022 DEA Members Dr Graeme McLeay and Associate Professor Vicki Kotsirilos write that more cars are not the answer to our transportation needs... https://thedriven.io//electric-buses-and-trains-are-the-a/

24.01.2022 The ABC developed Mt Resilience (augmented reality) to accompany their 'Big Weather' TV series. In this final episode of Mt Resilience you can experience a severe storm and bushfire as it hits the town and learn what changes to make to adapt to the challenges. We look forward to your feedback!

24.01.2022 The conclusion: whether the temperature rise is moderate or high, the message is the same: drastic measures are needed to curb climate change and failure is risky to the point of irresponsibility.

24.01.2022 The Federal Government wants to make changes to two organisations, which were set up to drive investment in renewable energy, to prop up polluting fossil fuels which are driving the climate crisis. Public funds should be used to support public health, not support industries which cause harm.

22.01.2022 DEA commends England's national health service's plan for net zero carbon emissions by 2040. The NHS is one of the largest employers in the world and the only health system to make this promise. With nearly 7% of Australia’s total carbon emissions, it's time Australia's health sector put its own house in order. https://www.dea.org.au/doctors-call-on-the-australian-heal/ As DEA's Honorary Secretary Richard Yin states, "It is unconscionable that we continue to run hospital...s on electricity from fossil fuel combustion which contributes both to a warming climate and air pollution that is associated with 3000 premature deaths annually in Australia. Global Climate & Health Alliance

22.01.2022 The latest DEA podcast is out now, discussing how nature is good for you and your patients! Ever wondered what your daily dose of nature should be? Join the hosts with Dr. Dimity Williams, DEA member, and Steven Wells, a therapeutic horticulturalist and nurse, to find out. https://omny.fm//your-daily-dose-of-nature-with-dr-dimity- Also available on all major podcast platforms and Spotify.

21.01.2022 The International Energy Agency has crowned solar power the new king of the world's electricity market. The IEA states that solar is now cheaper than coal and gas-fired power in most nations, and that these polluting industries are on their way out. A shift from fossil fuels to clean energy makes sense for health and the planet. What doesn't is why the Scott Morrison (ScoMo) government continues to prop up these dying industries, rather than support a #HealthyRecovery.

21.01.2022 Gas is no better than coal and we must keep it in the ground. We have reliable, cheaper and clean alternatives in solar and wind which dont cost our health or the planets health. We need to say NO to a gas-led recovery and YES to a #HealthyRecovery. Have you signed our petition to #TurnOffTheGas? https://turnoffthegas.good.do/turnoffthegas/turnoffthegas/

20.01.2022 A reminder that Doctors for the Environment will be hosting a free webinar The Health Effects of Climate Change: An introduction for general practise on Tuesday 25 August 2020 at 7pm. This event is a CPD activity (2 points) with the RACGP. While primarily aimed at GPs, all with an interest in health and climate change are welcome to attend.... To register please go to https://www.dea.org.au/eventregistration/ or contact Dr Kate Wylie via email at [email protected]

20.01.2022 News the Scott Morrison (ScoMo) government is set to ditch the Kyoto carryover credits to meet Australia's Paris agreement by year's end is welcome. It shows that public pressure--from you our wonderful FB community, other people and many groups--is working. We must keep it up up to ensure this pivot in policy direction is the start of an ambitious, urgent and bold move to do our fair share of addressing the #ClimateEmergency.

20.01.2022 Gas is not where public money should go. Where is the sense in propping up a dying industry that has significant health risks for our climate, our environment and our health, when we have renewables as an alternative power source? Green energy is also cheaper, provides more jobs and can open up eco opportunities. The so-called gas-fired recovery seems to be also driving the move to weaken our environmental laws. Environment Minister Sussan Ley MP is introducing hastily ...planned amendments to the EPBC Act that will make it easier to get approvals for major fossil fuel projects. Please write/phone/tag your local MP, call your local radio station and write a letter to the editor of your local paper to let them know you support a health recovery, not a polluting gas-led one. See more

20.01.2022 Our environment and wild life is at risk- lets not waste this review opportunity to get this right Sussan Ley MP. Any changes to our nature laws must be about restoring past damage, protecting natures existing wealth and coping with the scale of future challenges. Without a healthy environment, we cannot have healthy people. Yet as this article states, the Commonwealth Auditor-Generals recently reported a failure to protect endangered wildlife. 79% of approvals were non-c...ompliant or contained errors and most decisions were not made within statutory time frames. 19.01.2022 #FederalBudget Inclusion of a grant in the federal budget for Vales Point power station in NSW is an outrageous misuse of public funds, says Doctors for the Environment Australia's spokesperson Ben Ewald. Prolonging the life of this highly polluting coal fired-power station will expose large numbers of people from communities in the central coast to the large population centres of Sydneyto harmful air pollution, and fuel the climate emergency. Slapping this polluting clunker with pollution fees would be more appropriate. https://www.dea.org.au/2020-federal-budget-vales-point-sho/

18.01.2022 GP and DEA member Bob Vickers highlights the risks to health from air pollution. The NSW EPA has been sitting on a draft policy for many years, but a draft is meaningless and ineffective. We need the NSW EPA and the NSW Minister for Energy and Environment, Matt Kean MP, to release a clean air strategy for NSW.

18.01.2022 Australias power stations are located near regional towns, or in rural areas well away from cities, writes DEAs Ben Ewald. So most people living in cities would assume that they are protected from coal-fired air pollution by distance from the source. Wrong. A new Greenpeace Australia Pacific report shows substantial damage to our health from coal derived pollution is also occurring in major cities. Importantly, this report shows the impact of air pollution from coal-fir...ed power plants is greater than previously recognised by researchers who excluded the effects of nitrogen dioxide, adding urgency to the task of tackling this pollution. Any power station with more than five years remaining life should be required to install modern pollution controls. We also need plans to phase out coal-fired plants and replace them with by renewable energy from wind and solar. See more

18.01.2022 Great article by DEAs Lucy Watt on the need to alter our trajectories on CO2 emissions to avoid the very predictable climate crisis that is looming- including not using gas in our Covid recovery plan. Lucy writes that among the more sombre stories, are optimistic and bright ideas that offer little glimmers of hope.

18.01.2022 The Morrison government will announce plans today to promote a gas-led recovery. A resounding NO to new gas projects. The Morrison Governments gas push is not based on the science, or economics but ideology. Gas is not clean, like coal its polluting. Its not a bridge to renewables, but a bridge to worsening climate change. We dont have a shortage, but a global glut.... We have clean alternatives in solar and wind which are healthy, create jobs and boost the economy. Australia has a lot of gas in the ground and thats where we need to keep it. See more

17.01.2022 Last chance to get tickets for tonight’s event. The zoom link is in the ticket so click on the link below and we’ll see you tonight.

16.01.2022 As a sign of the rising concern about climate change, Australias peak medical groups, representing around 90,000 or 75% of the nations doctors have written to Prime Minister Scott Morrison (ScoMo), urging him to invest in health as part of the COVID-19 pandemic economic response. Read the joint letter: https://www.dea.org.au//2020-08-06-Healthy-Recovery-Letter Coordinated by Doctors for the Environment Australia, the signatories to the letter represent the nations GPs, e...mergency room doctors, physicians, obstetricians, psychiatrists and other disciplines. The joint letter is signed by DEA, Australian Medical Association RACGP The Royal Australasian College of Physicians Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, @RANZCP Royal Aust & NZ College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists RANZCOG Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) CICM and AMSA: Australian Medical Students Association

16.01.2022 Climate change was not mentioned, however 60 Minutes Australia's spotlight on the impacts of the summer's bushfire smoke and the toll on human health is welcome. DEA's Arnagretta Hunter, who is a cardiologist, was interviewed extensively for this segment. Arnagretta brought home the immensity of our horrific summer of bushfires: we've never had bushfires quite like this & never had smoke exposure quite like this. Thank you, Arnagretta- it was a great interview. You're an outstanding communicator.

16.01.2022 Documents suggest Adani’s long-term plan is not to scale down coal production but to ramp it up to 55m tonnes per year. Coal is hazardous to health. It pollutes our land, water and air, and contributes to further climate change an existential threat. We must #StopAdani for a safe and liveable planet and cleaner air. Read our fact sheet: https://www.dea.org.au//DEA-Adani-Long-Fact-Sheet_final.pdf

16.01.2022 Why would you go against all the advice of health experts that we need to reduce noxious vehicle emissions and reduce CO2 emissions? We need to incentivise electrification uptake not tax them. Electric vehicles improve air quality and therefore our health and they save governments through lower public health costs.

16.01.2022 Whats happened here? This is a shameful abuse of democracy with no interest in listening to the public. Australias #nature is in decline, yet Sussan Ley MP rammed a bill through the Lower House that further accelerates this decline. Without a healthy environment you cant have healthy people. All eyes and hopes are on the Senate to stop further damage to our environment.

15.01.2022 Our media statement in response to the CSIRO and BOM's State of the Climate report is urging a #netzeroaustralia as quickly as possible to address dangerous climate change. We must meet this crisis in the same way we have met the Covid-19 pandemic, with urgency, determination and by following the science. https://www.dea.org.au/doctors-set-emissions-targets-to-ze/

15.01.2022 Student launches legal case against the Government for failing to to disclose the financial risk caused by the climate crisis. While the current government will be long out of power by the time we can access this money, our financial security will bear the brunt of its climate legacy."

15.01.2022 We need nature for our health. As the EPBC debate is expected to resume in Federal Parliament as early as tomorrow, an attempt by the Scott Morrison Government to rush legislation to weaken Australias environmental protections, will have major health costs now and in the longer term. As Rosalie Schultz states in our media statement, Protecting nature is not only about protecting flora and fauna, its about protecting people. https://www.dea.org.au/doctors-group-warns-weak...ening-austr/ Our health is fundamentally dependent on the health of the natural world - for clean air, water and soils, food security, protection against infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and a stable climate. "Nature is also the source of many of the medicines we rely on, and new treatments under investigation. Sussan Ley MP

14.01.2022 Samuels interim report on Australias nature laws found our environment was in serious trouble and the EPBC Act not fit-for-purpose. This however hasnt stopped the Morrison government wanting to push through changes that would further decimate our precious environment. A massive thumbs up to crossbenchers Senator Stirling Griff Senator Jacqui Lambie and Senator Rex Patrick for promising to stick up for nature! The latest Living Planet report by WWF states that in the past 50 years, global wildlife populations have fallen by a staggering two-thirds, while some Australian animal populations have been nearly wiped out. https://livingplanet.panda.org/en-us/

14.01.2022 An unmissable online event for the healthcare sector Fri 4 Dec 11.45-12.45 AEDT! Let's raise our ambition on climate change in time for the UN Climate Conference next year. 14.01.2022 We need greater protection from severe smoke events. Todays Medical Journal of Australia reports increased childhood respiratory disease and wheeze in children who were exposed to air pollution from fire smoke in utero. The study focuses on the impacts of the Hazelwood coal mine fire in Victorias Latrobe Valley in 2014.... Read the MJA article here: https://www.mja.com.au//respiratory-and-atopic-conditions-

13.01.2022 This should be a great webinar that includes Dr George Crisp from DEA, on why we dont need a Gas-fired recovery but rather one led by renewables. https://events.humanitix.com/the-gas-fallacy

13.01.2022 Dear PM: doctors call for #HealthyRecovery DEAs Richard Yin explains why Australias peak medical groups, representing three-quarters of doctors, are calling on Scott Morrison (ScoMo) to place a #HealthyRecovery front and centre of our nations economic stimulus in response to COVID-19. Richard writes that COVID-19 and the recent escalation in numbers of new cases and deaths continue to bring untold misery and massive disruption. "The good news about COVID-19 is that, ov...er time, we will likely develop a vaccine for it, making its threat finite. In contrast, as the world edges towards climatic tipping points, the consequences of our inaction on climate change will neither be finite nor bounded and we will enter a new phase of Earths history, with little control over our fate as a species. There is still time to contain this threat, but the window of opportunity is fast closing..." The message from the doctors in a nutshell: A healthy recovery would help improve and protect the health and well-being of our communities. Check out useful links about the joint letter here: https://www.dea.org.au/joint-letter-to-pm-morrison-austral/ https://www.dea.org.au/healthyrecovery-joint-letternbsp/ https://www.dea.org.au/media-releasenbspaustralias-peak-me/

12.01.2022 Welcome news - WOOLWORTHS ,the sixth largest electricity user in the country, commits to green power within a 5 year time . As one of the larger retailers that reach into the daily lives of most Australians, this decision will have positive influence. The initiative is the latest in a series of Australian-based companies including ALDI, Bunnings, Officeworks and Telstra to set a strong renewable electricity target. Come on, Coles it’s time to follow suit!

12.01.2022 The Scott Morrison (ScoMo) Government should reject the recommendations from the fossil fuel heavy NCCC that is urging public money to support gas and invest in clean energies such as solar and wind. Support our call to #TurnOffTheGas https://turnoffthegas.good.do/turnoffthegas/turnoffthegas/ This fossil fuel risks harm to our health, drives climate change, and will do little for jobs and the economy. Ernst & Young reported that stimulus spending to back clean energy would create nearly three times as many jobs for every dollar spent on fossil fuel developments.

11.01.2022 Lived experiences of the risks and perils of bushfire smoke during our terrible summer of fires. #ClimateActionNow

10.01.2022 Congratulations to the amazing and inspiring young people launching a class action to stop the Australian Government approving an extension to Whitehavens Vickery coal mine, because it will worsen climate change and harm youth everywhere. This action encapsulates what we need in our elected representatives: conviction, being scientifically informed, acting in the best interest of public health and leadership.

10.01.2022 This is apt on National Threatened Species Day. Australian conservation groups have good reason to oppose the Coalitions bid to devolve the approval process for projects to state governments. Such law would mean fewer protections for our environment. Protecting nature is not only critical for biodiversity- the ecosystems also support human health by filtering our air, providing fresh water and food, regulating our climate, and protecting against the spread of disease and ...pests. 08.01.2022 A deeply reflective and powerful article by cardiologist Arnagretta Hunter on the link between COVID, the #ClimateCrisis and caring for the planet and each other.

08.01.2022 It’s heartbreaking to see Australia rank near the top of Swiss Re’s index of risk to biodiversity and ecosystems. Australia’s current review of our nature laws is an opportunity to protect our biodiversity on which health and our very existence depend on. Step up Sussan Ley MP it’s our chance to put this right.

07.01.2022 Sobering news: Australia is already experiencing climate change and we can expect more extreme fire seasons andbig weather events such as major flooding, severe cyclones and long-lasting droughts, finds the State of the Climate report from the BOM and CSIRO. Australia's climate has warmed, on average, by 1.44 degrees since 1910. As DEA has often highlighted, the #ClimateEmergency is an existential risk and we can no longer afford to wait for our leaders to catch up to t...he science- we need policies that put our health at the centre and address the risk now. As Dr Jaci Brown, director of the climate science centre at the CSIRO states, climate change is like: you have been eating junk food for 10 years and you jump on the scales for one day ... this is about a very long change. The big challenge for our children and grandchildren is how to flatten this curve. See more

06.01.2022 So where was Australia during the recent #BiodiversitySummit? As DEA's Rosalie Schultz writes in Croakey - independent, in-depth social journalism for health, our nation refused to sign the pledge for urgent action. But focusing on the costs of protecting biodiversity overlooks the cost of biodiversity loss. "If, as our representatives stated at the Summit, we cannot adopt biodiversity protection because it is inconsistent with our policy direction, then we must urgently change course. https://www.croakey.org/where-was-australia-during-the-un-b

06.01.2022 Our workplaces are unprepared for climate change, is the conclusion of a report, released by The Australia Institute' s Centre for Future Work. Those working outdoors, indoors without temperature controls and ventilation, moving between different climates, and those in emergency services were most at risk of heat stress. "Governments need to establish clear and accessible occupational health and safety pathways around heat stress, which empower workers to take mitigating action without fear of reprisal."

06.01.2022 The approval of a gas import terminal at Victorias Western Port, an environmentally significant area and a Ramsar wetland, has no social license. Australia is in the midst of a climate health emergency, of which last summers heatwaves and bushfires are stark testimony. Importing gas is not the way to a low carbon future. There are also significant health and environmental concerns that the EES has failed to properly address. https://www.dea.org.au/submission-to-the-ees-for-the-propo/

05.01.2022 Air pollution is a silent killer. The improvement of air quality during the pandemic is a reminder of why we should continue to urgently tighten air pollution standards in Australia, writes DEA member Vicki Kotsirilos.

05.01.2022 At last someone has done an estimate of the health burden from coal fired power stations across the whole of Australia. Until now we have only had estimates for individual cities or states. This report by Greenpeace Australia Pacific shows the continued burning of coal places an unacceptable health burden on the population of Australia, especially when there are non polluting alternatives available. To close the 22 power stations by 2050 requires closing one every 16 months. This is technically feasible without disruption to electricity supply if there is policy support for the renewable energy industry. Any power station with more than a 5 year operational life must be required to install modern pollution controls.

04.01.2022 Australia’s biodiversity is in crisis, yet we don’t have a problem? Scott Morrison declined to sign up to a global pledge endorsed by 64 countries committing them to reverse biodiversity loss because it was inconsistent with Australia’s policies. Recently, it used its numbers in the lower house to gag debate on its plans to weaken already failing environmental protections. We need our government to protect biodiversitythe very foundations of our wellbeing and health. Without a healthy planet, you can’t have healthy people. https://www.dea.org.au//DEA-Response-to-EPBC-Review-Interi

04.01.2022 We're dismayed that the Narrabri coal seam gas project was approved today. The health impacts alone should be sufficient to reject this disastrous proposal. 04.01.2022 AUSTRALIA'S POOR RECORD IN DOING ‘ROUGHLY NOTHING’ FOR OUR CLIMATE REVEALED- AGAIN Australia ranks in the bottom bracket in every climate policy category save one and is not on track to play its part to limit global heating to 1.5C, finds the Climate Transparency Report 2020. The Scott Morrison (ScoMo) government’s response? That the report is misleading. The costs of sticking to business as usual is significant to our health and the planet’s health and to the economy.... 03.01.2022 Australia is a leader in destructive land clearing practices. This crisis has wide ranging and harmful implications --for our fauna and flora and for human health. 02.01.2022 What a great initiative! UK doctors will soon be able to hand out green prescriptions to boost mental health, tackle obesity and a range of other health problems. The scheme will allow doctors to suggest gardening, cycling or tree- planting activities as well as coach trips to national parks for vulnerable people. A similar scheme has been operating in New Zealand since 1998.

02.01.2022 ‘While state governments are basked in praise for ambitious clean energy policies, a flurry of fossil fuel projects quietly get the green light.’ This dampens optimism. But the signs are that a transition to a clean energy future is unstoppable and has well and truly started. Continued pressure on our political leaders will hasten the process.

01.01.2022 The advisory body charting Australias economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic has recommended the Morrison government support larger gas pipelines to "future-proof" the countrys power supplies against increased demand. This is bad advice, given there is compelling evidence that gas is a polluting fossil fuel, and that renewables are cleaner, cheaper and dont cost our health or the planet.
