13.01.2022 Our friends at the Little Aussie Directory (LAD) keep tabs on their advertisers and maintain a register of testimonials (link below). We have used the LAD for some time and find it a great medium to make contact with people in need of our services. Advertisers in LAD are serious, long term, local businesses that you can rely on. When one gets delivered to you, keep it on hand, you never know when it might come in handy. Cheers. Alan. The Dr. http://www.littleaussie.com.au//com/dr-laptop/testimonials

11.01.2022 Beware of dangerous, faulty batteries. I had a recent experience with an exploding Apple Macbook battery. If the shop was unattended at the time, it probably would have burned the place down. Be very wary of batteries that are expanding as they become very volatile in that state. The accompanying pictures show the battery that exploded and caught fire and another battery that is getting ready to do the same. I have many Apple Macbook Batteries that have suffered this problem, so maybe Apple should be doing something about it. Like if you agree! Happy and safe computing. Cheers, The Dr.

08.01.2022 Kaspersky Labs is monitoring and reporting a new wave of ransomware sweeping the globe. Be aware and very careful. Known as "Bad Rabbit" (Variant of ExPetr attack), According to their findings, it is a drive-by attack: Victims download a fake Adobe Flash installer from infected websites and manually launch the .exe file, thus infecting themselves. Kaspersky researchers have detected a number of compromised websites, some news or media sites. The criminals behind the Bad Rabb...it attack are demanding 0.05 bitcoin as ransom thats roughly $280 at the current exchange rate. Whether its possible to get back files encrypted by Bad Rabbit (either by paying the ransom or by using some glitch in the ransomware code) isnt yet known. Tips to stay safe: Make sure you have quality security software installed. Only ever install updates directly from the vendors site. Always maintain data backups (noting that connected backup drives may be infected also). Never pay the ransom, encourages criminals and never guarantees you will get you data back. Thanks as always to Kaspersky Labs for their great work! Happy and safe computing. The Dr

08.01.2022 Computer users need to be extra vigilant with a wave of malware affecting computers worldwide. A variant of cryptolocker virus, spread by a self replicating worm is encrypting computers and demanding ransom be paid to decrypt infected users files on the computer. All user data on local computers and attached storage devices will be affected and rendered "unreadable and unrecoverable" unless decrypted. It is believed to be spread via emails so extreme caution is advised when opening or viewing emails and attachments. See article for more info. Be aware and stay safe. 03.01.2022 BEWARE: The "no fix-no fee" scam. Dr Laptop is a legitimate business and we do not offer "no fix-no fee" service. "no fix-no fee" is a scam operated by inexperienced and or dodgy repairers. All problems can be fixed, but are often too expensive to undertake. If the customer chooses not to proceed with a repair because it is too costly, or a system upgrade is a better option. the "no fix-no fee" offer becomes void, as it is your choice not to proceed. Legitimate tradesmen do... not work for free, they generally have plenty of paid work. Ask yourself, who would offer free labour and what is the catch? Wishing you all happy and safe computing. 03.01.2022 Update on the latest epidemic of a Cryptolocker type ransomware "WannaCry". While the original victims of the recent WannaCry epidemic were originally thought to be Windows XP users, new data from antivirus provider Kaspersky Lab shows that 98% of the victims were actually running Windows 7. (Thanks to Tech Republic). Whats more, when we look at the versions of Win 7 that were targeted, it is apparent that the attack was directed to versions other than Windows 7 Home, the mos...t common consumer version. (The below graph shows results from Kasperky Lab reseearch.) From that we can deduce that the attack was directed to users in large enterprises where higher versions of Windows are required to operate in large networked environments. The takeout from this is to always maintain windows updates. Do not rely on automatic updating, do it manually and often. If for any reason you cannot download and install windows updates, seek professional help, You may already have malware installed on your computer. Good luck and happy/safe computing. 03.01.2022 If youre thinking about upgrading to Windows 10, think again. Microsoft has settled a US$10,000 settlement for wrecking someones computer in the States. How many more will follow? Those who have chosen to upgrade are over represented in our workshop at present. Read the news article below for more info. http://www.news.com.au//n/02a1fa55bec1f4ef9aecb64ce494e455 If you have upgraded, you have 31 days to roll back, after which you basically lose all your options. If your sys...tem does play up or become inoperable and 31 days have past, you cannot roll back to previous operating system or do factory recovery from built in recovery partition. If you have made recovery disks, lucky you. Tips: Always generate a set of recovery disks (USB drive etc) as soon as possible (not possible after upgrade). Always maintain comprehensive data backup, especially irreplaceable content like photos. If you need any advice, give us a call.
