24.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic is a very unique situation for all of us to be in. As we are increasingly needing to spend more time at home, it means we get to spend more time with our dogs. Im sure some of your dogs must be feeling like theyve hit the jackpot! Both us and our dogs have the potential to benefit from spending more time together. Even though most of our dogs are probably very happy about this, we must also be mindful that some might be a little uneasy or stressed ou...t if it now means young kids are home 24/7. We also need to realise that this isnt going to last forever, and we will eventually return to work, school, life before COVID-19 hit, and unfortunately this might be a hard adjustment for some of our dogs. 19.01.2022 Friday Feel Good Story Dog lovers turned true friends, how two Melbournians built a friendship through a shared love of dogs Vonne and Renae are two Melbournians who met on Dogshare and became fast friends. As the mum of adopted dog Buddy, Vonne needed a helping hand when working long days and nights in a yoga studio while starting her own business.... Originally hailing from Adelaide, Renae missed her family rescues, Scotty and Lulu, back home. Being in a rental property, she isnt in a position to own her own pet, but said shed, heard about all these pet share websites where you can offer to help out and look after [dogs] without the commitment of having to get your own pet. So, I thought thats absolutely brilliant for my current situation. After trialling a few different pet sharing websites, Renae found that, Dogshare was quite an easy process and the only successful one.

11.01.2022 Dogs are cute but costly. Aint that the truth! The term puppy dog eyes is well established in modern vernacular for good reason. When you gaze into the unconditionally-loving soul of an innocent doggo, you want nothing more than to give them every treat and chew toy they desire. The RSPCA estimates dog owners will on average spend $25,000 on their pooch across its lifetime. Can you relate? ... Thanks to mozo.com.au for this excellent guide to understanding your Pup Budget. Confession: our Duke has chewed through THREE seatbelts in our car, setting us back $750 each time. What are the most expensive things your beloved doggo has done to hurt the hip pocket?

09.01.2022 Tough times for Melbourne, particularly those in the towers doing hard lockdown...but so lovely to see people working together and this little doggo benefiting an outing. Just quietly I think the officer would have enjoyed a simple walk at this time too

09.01.2022 A Shift in thinking Lets Be Empowered by Positive Reinforcement Training Positive Reinforcement is so empowering IF you understand it. ... We can be empowered by positive reinforcement if we understand a dogs motivation better. We need to realise that the dog isnt doing behaviour X to piss us off or to dominate us. The dog is behaving this way as a result of the consequence. So we need to work out what is happening in the environment that is reinforcing this behaviour to help modify it. Thanks to our brilliant guest blogger, Mel, from Cooper and Kids for her words of wisdom. Tag a few dog lovers in your life who could do with some helpful hints! https://www.dogshare.com.au/lets-be-empowered-by-positive-r

06.01.2022 Dog lover Jessica Chiapetta suggests adding hound love to your life. Jess adopted greyhound Louie from Sydney charity Greyhound Rescue. I first fell in love with greyhounds about four years ago when I saw some at a homes and gardens expo. Their gentle nature got me hooked almost instantly, said Jessica.... When I first met Louie, he greeted me with the warmest doggo hug! I knew that I wanted to keep him forever. Every encounter Ive had to date with greys has been of warmth and friendliness.

06.01.2022 Hello Dogshare community! We are all part of this community because we love dogs. So lets start looking at ways to encourage our dogs more when they are doing a good job. I am sure you can think of plenty of things you wish your dog would stop doing, like digging up your backyard, barking at every passer-by or stealing your socks each morning? ... Or things you wish your dog would do better, like coming when called or walking nicely on the leash? Theres a good chance that you get frustrated by your dogs behaviour and might even find yourself yelling at your dog or saying no to them all the time. But do you ever stop, acknowledge and give your dog praise for all the things they do right every day? Ten Ways to Encourage the Behaviours we want to see in our dogs.

06.01.2022 A great article by Pets Behaving Badly - Solutions with Dr Kate about the impact of a sudden return to work on our pets and how we can help them adjust to a huge shift in routines. Dr Kates tips for preparing your dog for your return to work: - Begin to ease your pet into the routine that will be in place once you return to work. For example, start walking your dog in the morning before you would normally leave for work... - Teach your pet to cope with separation by gradually spending less time with them when youre home and increasing the amount of enrichment (such as toys and treat puzzles) you provide them - Leave your pet at home for short periods and give them a long-lasting treat or meal in a puzzle toy as you leave. This helps to create a positive association with you leaving them alone - Gradually increase the time youre away until youre able to leave your pet for a full work day. Always try to leave your pet with their favourite toys and treats so theyre having a good time while youre gone - Feed your pet in another room or outside, away from you, to help them learn that being separated from you can be a pleasurable experience If you need help, reach out to a reputable trainer or behaviorist nearby who can assist.

04.01.2022 Are you thinking about getting a dog? Before we get into things, its well worth mentioning that we had planned this article before COVID-19 had taken hold of our lives. Within the pet space, we have seen some major changes to the landscape during this time. The biggest change is an enormous demand for new dog ownership, dog rescue, and even for our own helper volunteer service. ... This surge in demand reflects the very human desire to spend isolation with a furry buddy, we get it, dogs make incredible companions. For some people, the decision to bring a dog into their lives has just been fast-tracked. With so many of us housebound, its a seemingly perfect opportunity to bond with your new pup. Its really important to us that the decision to have a dog join your family is not something thats taken into lightly. We see the real impact of dogs joining lifestyles where they are not well-suited. Even well-meaning new dog owners can underestimate the demands that a dog can add to our lives. We agonised over releasing this article as we would implore anyone considering dog ownership to really think through this decision and be sure you are prepared for everything that lies ahead. In this article we: - Break Down the benefits and responsibility of dog ownership - Give you 10 questions to ask yourself before you get a dog - Links to additional reading on the challenges and considerations on entering dog ownership during COVID (Thanks to ABC News and Laura Mundy Dog Training) From Jess & Mel

03.01.2022 We are SUPER excited to welcome a brand new partner to Dogshare. Scratch is a young Melbourne-founded brand making dog food you can feel good about. Founders Mike & Doug set out to fix what they say is a broken dog food industry, with stores marking up the cost of food by up to 40%. Scratch cuts out the mark-ups and makes a super-premium kibble directly for dogs around Australia. Theyve also just launched The Great Australian Dog Survey - Australias largest study on dogs... and how they fit into our countries culture. Some fun early findings include: - 82% of Australians find others more attractive if they have a dog - 61% of Aussie dogs are fed bones - 70% of us let the dogs sleep in the bed! The survey closes on Monday May 25 and by filling it out, you can optionally enter your details to win a years supply of Scratch. Take the survey and see how you stack up!

03.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day to all the human AND fur mums! How about this for a treat, Pet Behaviour Vet are offering free enrichment toy advice. Now, you might be thinking "how hard is it to pick a dog toy?"... BUT... did you know, the toys we give our dogs actually have the ability to encourage different behaviours. For example, some toys will stimulate your dog (i.e. Rev them up for high energy play behaviours) and some encourage more calm behaviours. Giving your dog the right toys at the right time can help encourage the behaviours we want to see.

01.01.2022 Dog Lovers Turned Friends The story of Renae, Vonne and a special dog named Buddyganoush had us doing heart eyes from the very beginning. It sums up (better than we can) the *secret power* behind Dogshare. ... More than dog walking, more than a website for dog lovers... REAL-DEAL connection. Thats a pretty rare thing these days and we are so flipping happy when it works out as this friendship has. We wholeheartedly believe that humans (and dogs!) are better, stronger, and mentally healthier when we have our own village of support. In fact, if the Rona has taught us anything its showed us how painful it can be to be apart. The truth is, Dogshare is just a vehicle. A website platform for dog lovers, is technically the thing we provide, but the service is really what you, our community, make of it. A place to find a well-mannered pup for zoomies, somewhere to find a walking buddy, a place to keep up to date with all the doggy comings and goings in your area. A place to get some assistance, or make a new friend. More than anything we *ARE* our community. Thats you guys! So thanks for being part of our little tribe.
