23.01.2022 Last puppy class for the year....

22.01.2022 If you want your puppy to learn to love coming back to you aka 'recall', then it should be fun not formal. Formal can come later if you want it at all... Rory is learning running as fast as you can to Mum is both fun and reinforcing.

22.01.2022 This is a very difficult time for all of us dealing with this virus. It is particularly difficult if you happen to have a puppy during this time, I know because I have one. Puppy schools are closed and there is so much information on the internet it may be hard to choose between good and bad information. So, I am here to help you sort out the good from the bad - here is some good information to help you out. One of my favourite on-line trainers is Emily Larlham, otherwis...e known as Kikopup. Emily has created a 3 hour Complete Guide to Puppy Training, covering everything you need to know bringing up your puppy. Get back to me if you have any questions.. Enjoy training your puppy!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dbzPoB7AKk&t=805s

22.01.2022 Along with many others I am also dealing with raising a puppy during this difficult time of social isolation and distancing.. So I now prefer to use Environmental Familiarisation rather than Socialisation, although that does depend on your definition of the term. But lets just go with what most dog owners would class as socialisation - lots of interaction with lots of different people and dogs. Not going to happen now...... Enjoy these photos of Rory and I doing some EF in a new environment with a couple of people, a kid on a bike, ducks, cars and a large delivery truck plus a brave walk across a very high bridge..

22.01.2022 This is Charlie - the cutest and smartest little munchkin I got to see today.

22.01.2022 My 3rd session teaching the dogs, particularly the pup, "don't run out the gate when it opens". An important safety skill when we live in a rural area and have a solar gate, but an equally important skill no matter where you live..

21.01.2022 Getting your puppy familiar with & happy to experience something they are not sure about..... Give them choice!!!! Rory (13 wks)) was not sure about heading across this bridge. Not only was it very high with water below but it was also very long. Giving him choice to only go as far as he was comfortable with and then not continue, meant that he built up his confidence to go a little further at each attempt.. ... Luring him in an attempt to force him to cross the bridge could have been disastrous - distrust of me and/or a possible lifelong fear of bridges. See more

20.01.2022 The cheapest & best toy ever!! Obviously it is not necessary to pay a fortune to amuse your dog. Rorys most bestest toy of all...

20.01.2022 Playing in the rain and thunder. A perfect time for Rory to learn thunder is irrelevant. Play with an empty milk carton is fun enough that he can ignore the sound. Downside is I get wet..but so worth it to prevent my dog becoming noise phobic..

20.01.2022 If you think your dog may have difficulty in transitioning from having family around most of the time, to being alone once these current restrictions are lifted - then this post is for you. One of my good friends and animal behaviourist, Dr Kate Mornement is generously offering a free booklet to help you, help your dog through this time. Register to get your free copy..

19.01.2022 So many dogs, so many lessons learned.....

19.01.2022 Correct Sparrow!!!! Thanks to Peta Clarke......

19.01.2022 I came home a little earlier than average today and I have to say was horrified at the number of people I saw walking their dogs and at the dog park throwing ba...lls etc. It was 230 and still over 30 degrees. Please please please use common sense. Dont walk your pups when the temperature is high. Dont take them to the dog park and throw balls. Yes your dog may be keen to do so, but its not up to them to be the one that chooses to go. Stick to cooler times. Play water games (careful with hoses though). Stay in shaded areas and do some scatter treat searches. This is even more important in our flat faced short muzzled (brachycephalic) breeds, our long coated and double coated breeds.

12.01.2022 Understanding canine body language involves not just the tail. Observe the whole body head to tail - ears, body posture, eyes, mouth. Dogs use their body to clearly communicate with us. Learn their language..

10.01.2022 There is no "context" where whacking a dog on the head with a rolled up towel in the name of training is justified. There is no "context" where whacking a dog on the head with a rolled up towel in the name of training is justified.

06.01.2022 After years of studying, years of practical experience and spending a fortune on gaining knowledge and still I keep learning and evolving which I hope will neve...r stop I can only come to one conclusion: understanding and influencing dog behavior can be complex. I know we humans love to make it all seem like a straight forward formula, like a simple recipe that can easily be projected onto an entire species, like the domesticated dog. I know how many humans love the popular before and after videos where you dont get to see the middle Please: do not let yourself be fooled. Dogs are complex mammals. Each dog is a unique individual and there can be many factors that are influencing its behavior. Our dogs do not live in controlled laboratories (nope, not in Skinner or Pavlov boxes either, not saying that their theories are not extremely valuable because they are, but there is so much more to discover), dogs live were we live, in the real world. 05.01.2022 Sometimes its the simplest solution...

05.01.2022 I love this <3 It is so true. And its a conversation I have been having with many clients this week too.... Sometimes we need to create safe, happy, high-welfare "square holes" for our "square pegs" (rather than trying to force them into "round holes") - so that pets (& their people) can have better quality of life, without fear or frustration. And then maybe - over time, & with care - both dog & human get their "edges chamfered" to fit a new-shaped hole they can both fit into happily together (i.e. both learn new skills, within the context of who each is, what their needs are & the environment they live in) :-)

04.01.2022 What do you think??

03.01.2022 Thats about right!!!
