11.01.2022 Hi everyone. Just wanted to give you an update on how we're tracking and where we're heading. As you know, schools went back for Term 2 this week but with stu...dents learning remotely. Schools remain open for kids who can't stay home. But everyone who can learn from home must learn from home. Common sense tells you that we can't have a million students travelling to and from school, parents doing the daily drop off, the full cohort of teachers and staff and still maintain anything like the physical distancing we need. That's why we've made the call we have. This is new for everyone. Parents. Teachers. Students. And like all new things, it'll take a bit of getting used to. Thanks to our incredible teachers for your hard work in rolling this out and to parents and caregivers for all your support. And to any student reading this thank you for being so resilient and handling all the changes that have been thrown your way. I'm very proud of each and every one of you. Over the past week we've also expanded the testing criteria for coronavirus so that anyone with symptoms can get tested. Up til now we've focused our efforts on people who have recently returned from overseas, and those that have had direct contact with a confirmed case. That's where the vast majority of our cases have come from and so it has made sense to focus our testing and tracing efforts here. Now that travel restrictions and enforced quarantine are kicking in, we can be much broader and aggressive in our testing with the aim of finding and isolating as many cases in the community as possible. At the same time, we also fast-tracked the recruitment of 120 new paramedics to make sure we have as many ambos as possible on the frontline. And we've increased funding for Adult Retrieval Victoria, which is how we transfer critically ill patients from rural and regional areas to major hospitals. We're facing a health crisis, but I don't need to tell you how far-reaching its effects are. How many jobs have been lost. How many Victorians are facing financial stress. It touches all of us. And as a Government, we will do everything we can to help. Yesterday we introduced a whole host of measures to help Victorian tenants both residential and commercial. That includes a freeze on rental increases, and cutting tax bills for landlords who help out their tenants. We'll also provide direct financial assistance for residential tenants who are struggling to pay rent. And over the Easter break we rolled out extra support packages for Victorians experiencing family violence, homelessness, and mental health issues. I'll put links to those announcements in the comments if you'd like to have a bit more of a read. Just finally as you'll know, we have extended the State of Emergency and our Stage 3 restrictions until midnight on 11 May. I've seen some comments on here along the lines of "Things aren't so bad, so let's relax the restrictions." That's precisely the point. It's only because of those restrictions that things aren't 'so bad'. It's only because you're all doing the right thing and staying home that our hospitals are able to cope. That we're not burying hundreds of people every single day. You just have to look overseas for the alternative and that's a risk and a reality that we simply cannot abide. I know we're asking a lot of Victorians and I know people are finding it tough. But just remember that this isn't forever. And no sports match, no catch-up with relatives, no drinks with your mates is worth more than a life. It's simply not. As always, I'll keep you posted but in the meantime, please share your best tips for working or studying remotely. I'm new to all this home working stuff too but we'll figure it out together.
