24.01.2022 A CONVERSATION COULD CHANGE A LIFE This Thursday is #RUOKDay. We have all seen the posters around bus stops and heard the ads on the radio. We all know someone who is doing it tough. But what words do we use to reach out to them? Please watch the below video and share it with your children. It is a fantastic, highly practical example that shows how we can ask R U OK? particularly once kids transition back to face-to-face education.... Whilst #RUOKDay is officially on Thursday, this years theme is Theres more to say after R U OK? We are starting the conversation about mental health in advance of Thursday, because it really isnt just about one day. 24.01.2022 YEAR 12s DISCOVER FUTURE PATHWAYS Yesterday DSC hosted the Year 12 Careers Expo, where students had the opportunity to explore the options and career pathways available to them beyond school. The day included guest speakers such as 2015 DSC Dux Reuben Tee, interactive profiling activities, online presentations from key educational institutions such as Deakin, Monash and the University of Melbourne, and a spike ball tournament outside in the beautiful sunshine.... Thank you to students for showing their keen interest in exploring their pathways, and to our dedicated Senior School team and Year 12 teachers for their efforts in making the day such a success!

23.01.2022 EMBRACING THE TASTES OF ITALY, FRANCE & CHINA Spaghetti Alla Carbonara, Beef Bourguignon and Chinese Steamed Eggs are on the menu this week, as our wonderful language teachers invite students and staff to embrace the flavours of Italy, France and China! 22.01.2022 ALUM DRAFTED IN THE AFLW 2020 NATIONAL DRAFT Congratulations to Joanna Lin (Class of 2019), who was drafted as Pick 26 in the AFL Women's 2020 National Draft to Collingwood . We recently interviewed Joanna about her journey from when she played her first footy game at DSC in 2017 in Interschool Sports. She touched on her experiences throughout this challenging year and her excitement for the year to come. 22.01.2022 FAREWELL & GOOD LUCK MRS MCMASTER Today the community of Doncaster Secondary College farewells our wonderful principal of 10 years, Mrs Eva McMaster. We thank Mrs McMaster for her incredible dedication and service to the College over this time and for the legacy she leaves behind. We also wish Mrs McMaster all the best in her new role as Senior Education and Improvement Leader of Inner East Secondary Schools.... We are pleased to announce that Assistant Principal Mr Glenn Morris has been appointed to the role of Acting Principal for the remainder of the year. Please ensure you read this afternoons edition of the College newsletter for Mrs McMasters formal welcome to Mr Morris into his role, and for her final message to the community. Our College Council President Mrs Sofia Georgiou has also written a personal tribute to Mrs McMaster. After a week of heartfelt well wishes from staff, today we honour Mrs McMaster on her final day as Principal of DSC. Thank you Mrs McMaster for all you have done for our school. Your inspiring leadership will continue to guide us even in your new role, and you will always be part of the DSC family. Goodbye and good luck Mrs McMaster!

22.01.2022 WELCOME BACK YEAR 11 AND 12s Today we warmly welcome back students in Year 11 and 12 as they return to face-to-face learning, as have Year 10 students to attend their VCE or VCAL classes. Please rest assured that our leadership team together with all staff at the College will ensure the process of returning to school is as smooth and safe as possible. This includes daily temperature checks with a date stamp after a successful check.... As we prepare for remote learning for students in other year levels from 20 July, DSC teachers and staff are on site this week, getting ready to deliver the best possible learning program for all students. 21.01.2022 ART IN ISOLATION Last term, we invited students in years 7-10 to participate in the Art in Isolation exhibition. There is still time for students to create artwork, and what better time than now with the extra week of school holidays to get inspired. Students can submit creative writing, arts and crafts, poetry, music, photography, building projects, STEAM items, gardening or mindful creativity. ... We are excited to see students turn their lockdown time into an opportunity to create artwork that will be displayed both digitally and in Tunnel Vision art space at DSC. Students have until 21 August to submit their piece either digitally to Ms Gemma Patterson or Mrs Amanda Fisher, or in person once lockdown is lifted. We cant wait to see your creations!

20.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK ~ ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE This week we celebrate National NAIDOC Week. The theme this year is , , and is all about recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. "The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. They also built and engineered structures predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyrami...ds and Stonehenge. First Nations peoples’ adaptation and intimate knowledge of the country enabled them to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels." 20.01.2022 END OF TERM 2 As Term 2 comes to an end today, wed like to say how proud we are of our students and the way they have coped during this extraordinary time. We have done our very best to support the needs of each student and provide them with the best opportunity to continue achieving their learning goals. This term our emphasis on teamwork, resilience, responsibility and respect have shone through our entire community. We hope that as students pass through the school gates today, they leave feeling proud of all they have achieved. We look forward to welcoming back all students and staff on Monday, 13 July and we wish you and your family a safe and restful break.

19.01.2022 CONVERSATION MENU Today were pleased to launch a new weekly resource called Conversation Menu which has been produced by our Wellbeing Team. These 'menus' offer conversation starters for parents and carers, to open the dialogue with their children regarding issues that could affect their learning during lockdown. Although our Year 11 and 12 students, and Year 10 VCE students are attending classes on-site, many of the conversation starters are still relevant. ... Each week we will send out a new menu to guide families through a conversation. 17.01.2022 LET'S TALK ABOUT STRESS For many students, the exam period can be quite stressful and often there is a range of factors that contribute to this stress. In this video, we are shown how chronic stress can affect brain size, its structure, and how it functions. It also discusses how these effects can be completely reversed, by exercising regularly and practising mindfulness.

16.01.2022 VIRTUAL LAP OF AUSTRALIA CHALLENGE Students and staff may be in lockdown under Stage 4 restrictions, but they are still making the most of their hour of allowed exercise each day to compete in the DSC Virtual Lap of Australia Challenge! The challenge kicked off in July and has been a fantastic way for students in years 7-10 as well as teachers to get active during the remote learning period. The aim is to collectively complete a virtual lap of Australia (14,000km) by walking, running or riding. The tally currently stands at just over 10,000km! With only one week to go until the challenge finishes, we wish all competitors and the staff team good luck in their final push to cover the most kilometres. Thanks Mr Pring for making this challenge possible!

15.01.2022 COOKING WITH MISS LATTANZIO! With her apron on and fresh ingredients at the ready, Miss Lattanzio pressed record on her camera as she filmed her first ever cooking tutorial for her Year 9 Italian Class! This is just another example of how our dedicated teachers at Donnie are doing their absolute best to keep students feeling engaged and motivated during online schooling. Miss Lattanzios students were quick to jump onboard their cooking task and as a result, there were som...e proud students presenting their beautiful pasta dishes to their families for dinner. 11.01.2022 This week, Year 10 students have been immersed in a Virtual Careers Experience, shining a spotlight on their skills, interests and options. Classroom discussions around soft skills, personality profiling and work styles have been supported by a digital resource that offers a huge array of detailed industry information at students fingertips. Students will also enjoy a mix of practical projects, Zoom guest speaker presentations and creative classroom tasks to help them develop a stronger sense of self, direction and build excitement about their future.

10.01.2022 Congratulations to the successful applicants for the 2021 student representative council who were announced in the last newsletter. We have wonderful student leaders at DSC and we were pleased that so many students were eager to be involved in the SRC group next year. Thank you to the outgoing 2020 SRC group, who during an extremely tough year worked collaboratively to make sure that student voices were heard in every area of our school.

10.01.2022 YEAR 12 TEACHERS ASSEMBLY Last week the annual Teachers Assembly was held on the soccer pitch. Year 12 students were able to present their Year 12 teachers with a card signed by their class and a box of chocolates. After the assembly, students walked around the soccer pitch and were able to personally thank their teachers with a kind word, a sticker and a covid-friendly elbow bump.

09.01.2022 When is a burger not a burger? When it's in a Year 7 Molecular Gastronomy class! This week our DSC kitchens saw science and cooking collide as students created playful dishes that tricked the senses. Meat patties made of chocolate biscuits, watermelon made of jelly and carrots made of muffins were just some of the amazing creations. Using techniques such as aeration, emulsification and gelatinisation, students did a fantastic job to reimagine dishes, impressing teachers and classmates with their culinary art.

Use your imagination to create a fresh, fun and eye-catching design that reflects student life at the College. The winning entry will receive a $40 Westfield Gift Card. 07.01.2022 Did you know that music can have a positive impact on our mental health and wellbeing? Mr Knott recently organised a 'Tune In' music performance, which was a real hit amongst staff and students who went during their lunchtime to sing along. Mr Shirley and the band, Mr Harvey, Mr Iape and Mr Dean, played some the highly requested songs, along with other classics.

04.01.2022 VCAL DESIGN PROJECT Our senior VCAL students equipped themselves with shovels, power tools and building materials over the last week, putting their environmental design ideas into action at DSC! From transforming a shipping container into a bouldering wall, and using carpentry skills to build planter boxes, students have done a great job creating inspiring new spaces at Donnie. For now though, students have had to press pause due to lockdown. A native garden is planned next...lets hope it can happen in spring!

04.01.2022 A group of our wonderful Year 7 students have recently created an attractive wall display that the whole school community will see when they visit the library. After lots of planning and researching, they created a wall devoted to the author and illustrator Dr Seuss. Well done girls - you've done a marvellous job!

03.01.2022 #DSCrecharge: TIME FOR SOMETHING NEW! Middle School Students have welcomed a special day in their calendar this week, with #DSCrecharge taking place today. In response to students needing time away from their devices, weve allowed years 7-9 to switch up their daily routine and spend today developing a new skill of their choice. The beauty is that students can self-direct the area of their learning depending on their interest or passion. Our Year 10s have their #DSCrecharge ...on 16 September. With such a challenging term finally drawing to a close, we hope that today reminds students that learning can be fun, it can happen away from a computer, and that following their passion even if just for a day boosts their wellbeing. 03.01.2022 Year 11 student Jess R has set her sights on representing student voices in Victoria, by running for the peer-elected VicSRC Student Executive Advisory Committee for 2020-21! Victorian Student Representative Council is the peak body representing school-aged students in Victoria and Jess would love DSC students to get behind her and make their vote count. If Jess is elected to the Executive Advisory Committee, she will have the chance to attend meetings with the Minister for Education, speak on a panel to teachers and educators, and advise the Department of Education on how to design a program or initiative to best support students. 03.01.2022 INSPIRATION FOR FUTURE SCIENTISTS Its National Science Week, and students across DSC are exploring the 2020 theme, Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans. This week students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of marine science. This includes a virtual incursion from the 'Marine Team' to discover more about ocean sustainability and technology, plus an at-home science scavenger hunt involving riddles and puzzles.... Former DSC alumnus Tiffany D has also lent her support. She shares her wonderful video below, taking us on her journey towards a career in marine biology. Its well worth a watch.
