25.01.2022 National Science Week snapshot... Seahorses in the Swan River? Correct! This West Australian Seahorse (Hippocampus subelongatus) is right at home in muddy, silt...y habitats. Dr Glenn Moore our Curator of Fishes (pictured) has dedicated years to studying this species. He says: They’re true locals found only on the west coast, from Cape Leeuwin to Shark Bay. They're a protected species. These seahorses especially love hanging out in the Swan River during the summer breeding season, after which males care for their young in a pouch. They usually live in water less than 20m deep and can be found holding onto sponges, sea-squirts and all sorts of human-made stuff, like ropes, sunken wrecks and even shopping trolleys. Seahorses are true fish, just like a herring, or a goldfish. They swim with fins, they ‘breathe’ using gills, and they control buoyancy with a swimbladder. The West Australian Seahorse is quite a large species on a world scale. They get to about 25 cm and weigh more than 10 grams, perhaps even a little more than that when they’re pregnant. They come in brown, white, yellow, orange, red and even purple, but they can change colour too. They can’t swim fast to catch prey or escape predators, so they rely on a mastery of camouflage. A big part of my work the last five years or so has been getting the exhibits ready in the Wild Life gallery of the new Western Australian Museum I hope you all come along and learn about this species and many more when it opens 21 November. #NationalScienceWeek Photo credit: Sue Morrison.

After the success of the interview with lovely creative Virginia O'Keefe, the webpage has been hit with lots of creative content by some really... interesting people and the list is increasing every week.
