21.01.2022 We all need to be encouraged to stop and take care of our bodies sometimes. There are lots of great ways to do this Today we are talking about health check-ups for men and women between the ages of 45 and 50.... These are 45m comprehensive health assessements with a GP and a Registered Nurse which cover all aspects of health, lifestyle and wellbeing. Why? because doctors know this is the time in life when our bodies start to show signs of developing chronic diseases that can have a significant impact on health and wellbeing later in life. So if you are aged 45 - 49yo, this is a golden window of opportunity to make any changes to your health and lifestyle routines which will pay off in the decades to come. And... The Government thinks it's so important, they have invested in the initiative so that the health check ups have no out of pocket cost. 20.01.2022 If you wake up with a runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing, it can be really tricky to work out if the symptoms are seasonal hay fever, or if you should go and get a COVID test. So...what should you do? The truth is that symptoms can be hard to untangle.... In Sydney we typically see springtime grass pollen season peaking between October and the start of December. Because the pollen season is short and sharp, hay fever symptoms due to pollen exposure can be quite acute. It is associated with a lot of sneezing and sometimes with an itchy throat and itchy eyes. In the current environment, if you’ve got a runny nose for the first time, you’ve got a cough for the first time, the best advice is to have a COVID test. But, if you are someone who regularly gets hay fever, you’ll probably know the uncomfortable symptoms well. If you have red, watery itchy eyes along with sneezing, you’ll know this is a common hay fever symptom, which you don’t get with COVID-19. So if you know you're a hay fever sufferer try taking over the counter antihistamines and see if your symptoms resolve. If not, go for a COVID-19 test straight away. If you struggle with allergies and hayfever chat to your doctor. There are a variety of medications, tips and tricks that can help relieve symptoms. We'll be sharing some of our favourite simple remedies on social media this month. If your hay fever isn't too severe, over-the-counter medications may be enough to relieve symptoms. For worse symptoms, you may need prescription medications. Many people get the best relief from a combination of allergy medications. You might need to try a few before you find what works best. #doublebay #doctorsofinstagram #healthjourney #sydneydoctors #boutiquemedicine #doublebaydoctors #physicalhealth #selfawareness #covidaustralia #covidupdates #covidupdate #coronavirusau #pandemics #healthcrisis #isolationnation #isolationlife #isolation2020 #isolationdiaries #socialdistancingsaveslives #stayhomeclub #covidkindness #pandemiclife #isolationcreation #socialisolation #socialdistancing2020 #socialdistance #stayhomechallenge #covid19 #pandemic #coronavirus See more

20.01.2022 So, you've been on the pill for a good part of your 20s and now, after years of wanting to prevent pregnancy, you're thinking having a baby doesn't feel as far off as it used to. Do you need to "give your body a rest" from the pill? Will your fertility be affected by long-term use of the pill?... No and no. We know there is a common misconception that women who are on the contraceptive pill may find it more difficult to fall pregnant when they stop taking the pill. The truth is that most women return to the same level of fertility they had before taking the oral contraceptive pill. This myth is so pervasive that researchers have identified fear of infertility as a key reason for women avoiding this effective form of contraception. It’s difficult to assess the effects of the pill on a woman’s fertility when so many other factors may be contributing. Some women will return to their normal levels of hormone secretion within a couple of days of ceasing the pill. Others may take up to six or 12 months. But the majority of women will return to normal within the first few months. Overall, the pill - when taken as directed - is extremely effective at inhibiting fertility in the short term. With the evidence showing no long-term impact on fertility. Are you looking at contraceptive options? Or perhaps you're looking to conceive and want to discuss fertility. Book an appointment with one of our GPs to discuss your options. #doublebay #doctorsofinstagram #womeninmedicine #sydneydoctors #boutiquemedicine #doublebaydoctors #womenshealth #contraception #iud #thepill #womenshormones #reproductivehealth #fertility #menstrualhealth #sexualhealth #womensupportingwomen #womenshealthmatters #menstrualcycle #periodpain #endometriosis #endomestriosisawareness #sydneyhealth #womenshealthcare #hormonaliud #womenshealthtips #fertilityawareness #birthcontrolproblems

18.01.2022 So your newborn was gaining weight week on week and you thought you had things sort of under control. Then all of a sudden weight gain slowedwhat is going on? Don’t panic! Ask yourself the following questions: Have there been any changes in your baby's behaviour? For example, has your baby been taking fewer feeds as a result of sleeping longer at night?... Have you been trying to feed at set times instead of when the baby indicates hunger? Have you (mum) been feeling stressed or unwell? For some women this can cause a temporary dip in milk supply. Have you just started a new medication such as the contraceptive pill? Could you be pregnant? These factors can cause a dip in your supply. Has your baby been ill? Even a small cold can disrupt feeding and weight gain for a week or two. Has your baby previously gained well and is now slowing down normally? It is very normal for an exclusively breastfed baby's weight gain to slow down at 3-4 months. The World Health Organisation child growth standards, based on healthy breastfed babies, support this. In most cases of sudden weight change, a 'wait-and-see' approach is justified if your baby seems happy and other indicators of growth and health are fine. If there seems to be a temporary low supply problem, offering a couple of extra breastfeeds a day can help avoid a more serious situation. If you are concerned, contact your GP. Midwifery and lactation advice can also really help if you are worried. 17.01.2022 "Heres a scenario thats becoming all too common: Your child had a runny nose last week, so you took the whole family for COVID-19 tests. You had to get time off work, wait in your car for hours at the drive-through clinic and nervously isolate at home. Thankfully, the tests all came back negative. Now just a week on, you have a child complaining of a sore throat.... The thought of going through the testing rigmarole again is exhausting and youre wondering if you can just keep the kids home from school and skip the test... But rhinovirus and COVID-19 share a lot of the same symptoms and there is no way you or a doctor can spot the difference, only a lab test can. So even though coronavirus testing is disruptive and unpleasant, experts are urging people to get the test and not self-diagnose." - (Paige Cockburn, ABC Health) Experiencing respiratory symptoms such as sore throat, runny nose, cough, fever, earache, or more? 14.01.2022 It can be tricky to navigate a conversation with someone about how they’re going beyond the everyday chats you have. Always try to be considerate and supportive making sure to focus on them and how they are, rather than problems that may have happened - at work, at school or in a relationship. It may sound simple, but a good first step is asking, Are you OK? Tell them you’ve noticed they haven’t seemed like themself lately.... Ensure they know your conversation is private, and if they’re not comfortable opening up to you, encourage them to talk to someone else. If they do want to talk, make sure to listen and let them speak. Offer to help them seek further support if necessary. Talk through next steps together and after the conversation is over, be sure to check back in with them in the following weeks to see how they’re going. #doublebay #doctorsofinstagram #healthjourney #sydneydoctors #boutiquemedicine #doublebaydoctors #physicalhealth #selfawareness #mentalhealthcare #mentalhealthhelp #mentalhealthadvocacy #mentalhealthadvice #mentalhealthproblems #mentalhealthaustralia #humanpsychology #psychologyandmore #psychologydaily #psychologylove #socialpsychology #psychologysays #mentalhealthquotes #mentalhealthwarrior #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthstigma #mentalhealthjourney #mentalhealthmatters #suicideprevention #mentalillness

14.01.2022 It is not uncommon for a young child to have numerous ear infections in their first year of life. So why infants get ear infections? Young children have smaller Eustachian tubes - which is the narrow passage that connects the middle ear to the nose and the back of the throat. ... The most common type of ear infection develops along with a cold or other upper-respiratory infection, when the lining of the Eustachian tube swells and gets blocked up. The blockage causes fluid to accumulate in the middle ear behind the eardrum, which then becomes a breeding ground for germs. The pain and temporary hearing loss your child sometimes experiences is due to the blocked fluid putting pressure on the eardrum; the fever your child often develops is due to the infection in the middle ear that their little body is fighting. If your child suffers from recurrent ear infections its important to see a doctor for assessment. 13.01.2022 So we know sleep is essential at any age. Sleep powers the mind, restores the body, and fortifies virtually every system in the body. But how much sleep do we really need in order to get these benefits?... National Sleep Foundation guidelines advise that: Healthy adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night Babies, young children, and teens need even more sleep to enable their growth and development. People over 65 should also get 7 to 8 hours per night. If you or a family member are experiencing symptoms such as significant sleepiness during the day, chronic snoring, leg cramps or tingling, difficulty breathing during sleep, chronic insomnia, or another symptom that is preventing you from sleeping well, you should consult your GP to determine the underlying cause. A good night's sleep can make a world of difference to your day. 13.01.2022 Getting quality sleep in pregnancy can be a challenge. From 28 weeks it is recommended that pregnant women sleep on the left side, but why? Lying on your back puts pressure on major blood vessels. This can reduce the flow of blood to your womb, and restrict your babys oxygen supply. Research has shown that sleeping on your side can reduce the risk of stillbirth by half.... You can make it more comfortable, by bending your knees and putting a pillow between your legs. You can also put a pillow under your belly for support. If you wake and find youve been asleep on your back, turn onto your side. 09.01.2022 Yesterday was pregnancy and infant loss remembrance day. Approximately 20% of pregnancies result in loss (and some studies put the percentage much higher), so it is likely that someone you know has had a miscarriage. The stigma around the topic means that unfortunately, few people talk about their experiences. That makes it easy to imagine that miscarriage is an anomaly. Many women report feelings of shame, self-blame, and guilt following miscarriage, and the enforced silence... around the topic surely doesn’t help. This has got to change! A frank, thoughtful conversation is the first step. JUST LISTEN The essential element of any meaningful conversation is listening. It can be tough to listen without offering advice, and it can be incredibly intense to hear someone you love talk about the pain they are in without attempting to save them from it or fix it somehow. DITCH THE PLATITUDES Steer clear of statements that begin with at least: At least you know you can get pregnant. At least you already have a healthy child. At least you weren’t very far along. Try these instead: I am deeply sorry for your loss. I am here for you. If you want to talk, I will listen. You are loved. PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES When you’ve been in psychological pain, what did someone say to you that was particularly loving? There is no one-size-fits-all approach to talking about hard things, but do say something. CHECK IN - AGAIN AND AGAIN Even if they aren’t struggling with feelings of grief or anxiety, bringing it up relays your care, concern, and openness to talking about it if they want to, now or down the road. BREAK THE SILENCE No one should be compelled to tell their story if they don’t want to, but we as a society should dare to be vocal about reproductive challenges and how they affect us. Speaking up may be scary, but just think about how much scarier it is to live in a world that doesn’t acknowledge such a trauma - one that happens to millions of women around the world every single day. #doublebay #doctorsofinstagram #healthjourney #sydneydoctors #boutiquemedicine #doublebaydoctors #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthstigma

02.01.2022 We all know that pregnancy is a time to take extra care of yourself, but why do you need to be vaccinated during every pregnancy? In particular, influenza and whooping cough vaccines are recommended every pregnancy because the amount of antibodies your body produces against these diseases decreases over time. Flu vaccine - Pregnant women are more likely experience severe illness from influenza, which may be due to changes in immune, heart, and lung functions during pregnancy.... It is therefore recommended pregnant women get a flu shot during pregnancy to protect against the flu and protect the baby for several months after birth from flu-related complications. Whopping cough vaccine - Vaccination against whooping cough during pregnancy can protect your newborn from day one. This is because your body produces antibodies that get passed onto your baby before birth. These antibodies may protect your baby until they are ready to receive their own vaccinations at 6 weeks of age.
